The host enables Multiplayer game and Visible to LAN Players in the world’s Multiplayer settings, then starts it. On the other device, choose Play > Worlds and select the entry marked LAN. Minecraft’s LAN instructions cover this flow.
What you need before joining
- Both players must be connected to the same local network.
- Each device must support LAN play, and both copies of Minecraft should be current.
- The host must start the world with Multiplayer game and Visible to LAN Players enabled.
The devices do not have to be the same type. Minecraft’s LAN guidance specifies a shared network and supported devices, not a particular router model.

LAN play and online friend joining are different
A LAN world is discovered under Worlds and requires both devices to share a local network. The online friend flow uses the Friends screen and an internet connection; it is for joining a friend online, not for finding a LAN-marked world. See Minecraft’s explanations of LAN play and online friend joining.
Console subscription requirements are discussed for online multiplayer, but the cited guidance does not establish that a subscription is required to join a local LAN world. Keep that distinction in mind if you are switching from LAN to an online session. Minecraft describes multiplayer requirements here.

If the LAN world does not appear or the connection fails
- Check the network: Confirm both devices are on the same local network and support LAN play.
- Check the host: Confirm the world is open and both Multiplayer game and Visible to LAN Players are enabled.
- Update the game: Install the latest available Minecraft release on both devices. Different or outdated versions can prevent a connection.
- Review multiplayer permissions: Check the account’s multiplayer permissions as well as the world’s multiplayer settings.
- Confirm availability: Make sure the host is still online in the world. If the documented checks do not resolve the issue, investigate the network configuration; the cited help does not identify a particular router or firewall setting as a confirmed fix.
Minecraft’s connection troubleshooting guidance also points players to version, permissions, host availability, and network checks.
