On PC, the easiest way to join a Left 4 Dead 2 server is through a Steam lobby or the game’s server browser. If someone gives you a server address, enable the developer console and run connect IP:PORT. To make an entire lobby use a specific dedicated server, the lobby leader can run mm_dedicated_force_servers IP:PORT before starting the search.

Choose the connection method that fits your situation
There are four practical ways to enter a Left 4 Dead 2 server. Menu-based methods require no commands, while console methods give you control over a named server. Your choice also determines whether the connection is a one-time join or something you can repeat easily.

What you need before joining
- Left 4 Dead 2 installed on PC through Steam. The menu and console names below refer to the PC version.
- A destination. For a direct connection or forced lobby, obtain the complete server address in
IP:PORTform. An IP without the port may not identify the intended server. - The console enabled for command-based methods. You can turn it on at Options > Keyboard > Advanced. Valve also documents
-consoleas a launch-option alternative. - A lobby role for lobby-routing commands. Only the lobby leader should enter
mm_dedicated_force_servers; it controls where that lobby searches. - A current address. Community servers can change status or addresses. An old address will fail even when your game and internet connection are working normally.
Join through a normal Steam lobby
This is the least technical route and the right choice when you want to play with a friend or let matchmaking choose an available dedicated server.
Join a friend’s lobby
- Accept or select your friend’s Left 4 Dead 2 game invitation in Steam.
- Enter the lobby and check the lobby’s server-selection setting. Use the dedicated-server option offered by the game when you want a dedicated host rather than a local listen server.
- Wait for the lobby leader to start the game. The leader’s server choice applies to the search.
Create your own lobby
- Open the online-play menu and create a lobby for the campaign or mode you want.
- Choose the appropriate dedicated-server setting in the lobby. Best Available Dedicated is an example of a dedicated-server mode.
- Invite friends or leave the lobby public if you want other public players to join.
- Start the search. The game handles the server selection without requiring a console command.
Use this method when you do not have a specific address. It does not let you name one particular community server; for that, use the browser, connect, or the forced-server command below.

Find a server with Steam’s server browser
The server browser is useful when a community host has not given you a direct address, or when you want to inspect available servers before joining. A hosting guide identifies the Steam browser, the in-game console, and Steam Favorites as the main connection methods.
- Open Steam’s server browser for Left 4 Dead 2.
- Look through the available entries and select the server you want to use.
- Choose Join.
- If the server list looks out of date, refresh it before deciding that the server is unavailable.
A browser listing is not a permanent guarantee that the server will accept a connection. The operator may have taken it offline, changed its address, or filled its available slots between the time it appeared and the time you selected it. If a server you know should be online is missing, try its address with connect IP:PORT and refresh the browser or your Favorites list.

Join a specific server with the developer console
Use a direct console connection when another player or a community page gives you a server address. Valve describes the Source command as one that “Immediately connects to a server address.”
Enable the console
- Launch Left 4 Dead 2.
- Open Options.
- Select Keyboard.
- Open Advanced and enable the developer console.
- Apply the setting and return to the game.
If you prefer to have the console available at launch, Valve also documents the -console launch option. Enable the console before attempting to enter a command; typing into chat or another menu will not execute a server command.

Connect by address
- Open the developer console in-game.
- Type
connect IP:PORT, replacing the address portion with the complete server address you received. - Press Enter and wait for the connection attempt to finish.
This is a direct client connection. It is different from routing a lobby: connect sends your client to the named server immediately, while mm_dedicated_force_servers tells a lobby’s search which dedicated server to use.
Check the address and save a recurring server
If a player already on a server needs to confirm its public address, the Steam discussion recommends using status in the console. A server you expect to revisit can be saved to Steam Favorites, so you do not have to retype the address each time. Favorites are especially useful when a community server does not consistently appear in the public browser.

Join a Steam Group server
Steam Group servers are designed for communities that play together repeatedly. Left4DevOps documentation explains that these servers appear in the game menu and can be selected as a hosting option.
- Join the relevant Steam Group.
- Open or join a Left 4 Dead 2 lobby.
- Open the lobby’s server options.
- Select the group server listed for that Steam Group.
- Start the lobby search or wait for the leader to start it.
This route is more repeatable than a one-time IP because the group’s server is presented through the game’s menu. If it does not appear, confirm that you joined the intended group and refresh the relevant list before trying a direct address.

Force a lobby onto a known dedicated server
Use this method when several players need to enter the same lobby and you already know the dedicated server’s address. The lobby leader performs the setup.

- Create or open the lobby as its leader.
- Open the developer console.
- Enter
mm_dedicated_force_servers IP:PORT, replacingIP:PORTwith the complete address. - Set the lobby’s server mode to a dedicated option, such as Best Available Dedicated.
- Make the lobby public if public players need to join it.
- Start the search.
The command affects lobby routing; it is not a substitute for the client-side connect command. If you are alone and simply want to enter a server, use connect IP:PORT instead. If you want friends and public players to be matched into a lobby that uses one known dedicated host, use the forced-server sequence.
Running the dedicated server yourself
Joining someone else’s server and operating a dedicated server are separate tasks. If you run a dedicated server, Steam support warns that the normal Steam account running the server cannot join that server with the same account. Use a separate Steam account for the server process, then join from your regular account.
This limitation matters when testing a new server. A failed attempt from the account that launched the server does not by itself prove that the server is unreachable; test from a different account instead.
Troubleshoot a failed or missing connection
The server is not listed
- Refresh the server browser or Favorites list.
- Ask the operator to confirm that the server is still online and that its address has not changed.
- Try the complete address with
connect IP:PORT. A known address can work even when a browser listing is stale or temporarily absent.
connect fails immediately
- Check every character in the IP and port. A missing or incorrect port sends the request to the wrong destination.
- Confirm that the server is online. Addresses become stale when a server changes status.
- Make sure you entered the command in the developer console, not in text chat.
- If the address came from an old message or screenshot, request a current one from the operator.
The forced-server command does not route the lobby
- Confirm that the lobby leader entered
mm_dedicated_force_servers IP:PORT. - Set the lobby to a dedicated-server mode before starting the search.
- Use a public lobby when public players must be able to join.
- Do not substitute
connectfor the lobby command; the two commands operate at different levels.
A Steam Group server is missing
- Verify that you joined the relevant Steam Group account.
- Return to the lobby’s server options and refresh the available entries.
- Ask the group operator for the current address and use the console as a fallback.
You operate the server but cannot join it
Do not use the same Steam account that is running the dedicated server process to join that server. Steam’s guidance is to use a separate account for the server process.

Which method should you use?
- No server address and no technical setup: create or join a normal lobby and choose its dedicated-server option.
- You can see the community server in a list: use the Steam server browser and select Join.
- You received an address for your own client: enable the console and run
connect IP:PORT. - You play with a recurring community: join its Steam Group or save the server to Favorites.
- Your whole lobby must use one known dedicated host: the lobby leader should run
mm_dedicated_force_servers IP:PORT, choose a dedicated mode, and start a public search when necessary.
