Simple Voice Chat works only when the server and every participating player run matching mod builds, and when its separate UDP port is reachable. Install the loader-specific mod on both sides, let the server generate config/voicechat/voicechat-server.properties, set port= to an available UDP allocation (the documented default is 24454), expose that port through your host, firewall, and router, then verify the startup message reports the same number.

What you need before installing
Prepare these details before downloading anything:
- The exact Minecraft version. A mod file for one game version is not automatically compatible with another. Select the file whose Minecraft-version label exactly matches the server.
- The server loader. Record whether the server starts with Fabric or Forge. The two loaders use different mod files even though the voice-port workflow is the same.
- A matching client installation. Simple Voice Chat is client-and-server software. Every player who will use voice must install a compatible client mod as well as the server mod.
- A reachable UDP port. Voice packets use a separate UDP port, not the normal Minecraft game connection. Managed hosts must provide an additional network allocation; self-hosted servers need a firewall rule and router forwarding.
- Access to the server files and startup console. You will need to edit one generated property and compare its value with the number assigned by your host or router.
Do not choose a download solely because its loader name says “Forge” or “Fabric.” Check the complete Minecraft-version and loader labels together. The CurseForge listing reported version 2.6.24 builds for Minecraft 26.3 on September 20, 2026, with separate Fabric and Forge files; those labels are examples of why both fields matter, not a substitute for checking the version your server actually runs.

Forge and Fabric: what changes and what does not
The fundamental procedure is identical: put the correct mod in the server’s mods directory, install the matching client mod, generate the configuration, assign a reachable UDP port, and verify the server log. Differences are limited to the loader-specific file and the surrounding server platform’s folders and networking controls.

Choose by exact Minecraft version first, then loader. Current releases change, so an apparently newer file is not the right file if its game-version label differs from your server.

Install the server and client mods
1. Confirm the server’s version and loader
Read the version shown by the server launcher or hosting panel and identify whether it is Forge or Fabric. Write both values down. If you operate several server instances, check each instance separately; copying a mod from one instance to another without checking its version is a common cause of an apparently installed but unusable voice service.
2. Select the loader-specific Simple Voice Chat file
Use a current project listing such as the official CurseForge or Modrinth page and filter for the exact Minecraft version and loader. The listing separates Fabric and Forge files. Download the server-compatible mod file, not an unrelated plugin or a file for a different game release.
3. Install the server file
- Stop the server completely. Do not replace a mod while the server process is still writing files.
- Open the instance’s
modsdirectory. On a managed host this is normally available through its file manager or SFTP; on a self-hosted server it is the folder containing the other loader mods. - Upload or copy the selected Simple Voice Chat file into that directory without renaming its extension.
- Leave the other loader and dependency files unchanged unless the project’s version notes explicitly require an update. A voice mod file for the wrong loader will not become compatible by changing its filename.
4. Install the matching client file
Every participating player installs the client-side build for the same Minecraft version and the same loader family used by that player’s profile. A player who joins with an unmodded client, a different loader, or a different game-version build may connect to Minecraft but still see voice chat as unavailable or disconnected.
Players should launch the profile once after installing the mod and confirm that the mod appears in the loader’s installed-mod list. Keep client and server files aligned when updating; update a test client and the server together rather than mixing release generations.
Generate and edit the voice-chat configuration
1. Start once, then stop cleanly
Start the server with the new mod installed and wait for normal startup to finish. The first run creates the voice-chat configuration tree. Stop the server through the hosting panel or its normal console command so the file is flushed safely before editing it.

2. Open the generated property file
On both Forge and Fabric, open:
config/voicechat/voicechat-server.propertiesFind the line beginning with port=. A newly generated file may contain the documented default:

3. Set the assigned UDP port
Replace only the number after port= with the UDP port you intend to expose. For example, if a managed host gives the instance a voice allocation of 30123, the line must read:
port=30123Do not put a protocol prefix, a colon, or the Minecraft game port on this line. Save the file as plain text with the same filename and extension.

Create a separate allocation
A managed server generally assigns the Minecraft game connection and voice traffic separately. In the hosting panel, create or request an additional network allocation that supports UDP, then copy the exact port number shown for that allocation. The Modrinth hosting guidance explicitly creates the additional allocation before editing voicechat-server.properties.

Match the allocation in the property file
With the server stopped, set port= to the allocation’s number and save the file. If the panel shows an address and port, use the port portion for the property; the server does not need a URL in this setting.
Check host-level filtering
Some hosts expose a port only after you add it to the instance’s firewall or network-allocation list. Confirm that the allocation is enabled for UDP, not merely TCP, and that it belongs to the same server instance whose files you edited. If the host cannot supply an additional UDP allocation, ask support whether voice traffic is permitted; without a reachable UDP allocation, the mod cannot establish voice communication.
Expose the port on a self-hosted server
Allow inbound UDP in the operating-system firewall
Create an inbound rule for the exact port in voicechat-server.properties and select UDP as the protocol. A rule for the Minecraft game port or a TCP-only rule does not cover voice packets. If your firewall has separate profiles for private and public networks, apply the rule to the profile used by the server host.
Forward the port in the router
If players connect from outside your local network, forward the same UDP port from the router to the computer running the server. Give that computer a stable local address or a DHCP reservation so the forwarding target does not change after a reboot. Keep the external and internal port values the same unless you deliberately configure a different mapping and then use the externally reachable number in the server setting.
Check upstream restrictions
Carrier-grade NAT, institutional networks, and double-router setups can prevent unsolicited inbound UDP even when the local firewall is correct. In those environments, a managed host with a dedicated UDP allocation or a network design that provides inbound forwarding is required. Do not diagnose this as a mod mismatch until the port is confirmed reachable from outside the local network.

Start the server and verify the configured port
Start the server after saving the property and enabling the allocation or forwarding rule. Watch the startup console for a line equivalent to:
Voice chat server started at port <allocation-port>The number in that message must equal the number in voicechat-server.properties and the number assigned or forwarded by your network. For example, if the file says port=30123 but the console reports 24454, stop the server and correct the property or the host allocation before asking players to test.
A successful Minecraft startup does not by itself prove that voice networking works. The game connection can use its normal port while UDP voice traffic remains blocked, so treat the voice startup line and the external UDP rule as separate checks.
Configure and test each player’s client
Join with a matching profile
Launch the client profile containing the matching Simple Voice Chat build and connect after the server has fully started. If the server reports a loader or mod-version error, stop and align the Minecraft version, loader, and mod file before changing network settings.
Use the in-game voice GUI
Open the mod’s in-game voice-chat interface, review the keybind, and select the intended microphone and output device. The project page includes a microphone test in this GUI. Speak while the test is active and confirm that the selected input meter responds; this separates a local operating-system microphone problem from a server connection problem.

Check the keybind and audio mode
Use the displayed voice keybind while connected. If the key conflicts with another mod or the keyboard layout, assign a different key in Minecraft’s controls menu and test again. Verify that the chosen output device is not muted and that the operating system has granted the game microphone permission.
Troubleshoot “voice chat not connected”
The server mod is missing or did not load
- Stop the server and inspect the
modsdirectory for the Simple Voice Chat file. - Read the startup log for a mod-load error, a wrong-loader warning, or a Minecraft-version conflict.
- Replace the file with the build labeled for the server’s exact version and loader, then start again.
A client cannot establish voice service when the server side is absent, even if the client mod is installed correctly.

The client does not have the matching mod
- Confirm the player launched the modded Forge or Fabric profile rather than the vanilla profile.
- Check the client’s installed-mod list and compare its Minecraft version, loader, and Simple Voice Chat build with the server.
- Have the player restart the launcher after replacing an old file; running instances keep the previous mod set in memory.
The property, allocation, and console numbers differ

The firewall or router blocks UDP
Confirm that the rule is UDP and that it targets the voice port, not only the Minecraft game port. On a home network, verify forwarding to the correct machine and test from a connection outside the LAN. On a managed host, confirm the extra allocation is enabled and assigned to the correct instance.
The host cannot provide an extra UDP allocation
Ask the host whether it supports a separate UDP port for Simple Voice Chat. The project’s documented setup requires that port to be opened; a host offering only the game port cannot be made compatible by changing the client keybind or reinstalling the mod.
Only one player fails
If most players connect but one player sees “not connected,” the server port is probably reachable. Compare that player’s client mod, Minecraft version, loader profile, local firewall, VPN, and microphone permissions with a working player. A local audio-device failure can prevent usable voice even when the network connection is established.

- Can you read the startup console to confirm the server actually bound the intended port?
Neither Forge nor Fabric changes the essential networking requirement. The deciding factors are version-specific file availability, the client profiles your players already use, and the host’s control over UDP allocations and firewall rules.
Final pre-launch checklist
- Record the exact Minecraft version and loader.
- Install the matching Simple Voice Chat server file in
mods. - Install the same-version, same-loader client file for every participating player.
- Start once to generate
config/voicechat/voicechat-server.properties, then stop cleanly. - Set
port=to the host allocation or chosen forwarded UDP port; use 24454 only when that port is actually available. - Enable the port in the hosting panel or operating-system firewall and router.
- Start the server and confirm the console’s voice-port number matches the property and network allocation.
- Join with a matching client, select the microphone in the voice GUI, run its microphone test, and check the keybind.
When all three port values match and both server and client run compatible files, “voice chat not connected” is no longer a generic mystery: the remaining diagnosis is confined to the individual client’s mod profile, audio device, or local network.
