In Terraria, choose Multiplayer → Join via IP, select your character, and enter the server’s IP address and port. Use port 7777 unless the host configured a different one. The right IP depends on whether you’re on the host’s local network or connecting over the internet.
Join the server in Terraria
- Ask the host for the server IP address and port, and whether the server has a password.
- Open Multiplayer → Join via IP.
- Select the character you want to use.
- Enter the IP address, then enter the port when prompted. Use 7777 unless the host gives you a custom port. The Terraria server reference lists 7777 as the default.
- Enter the password if the server requests one.
Which IP address should you enter?
Use an address that matches how you’re connecting:

- Same local network: Enter the server computer’s local IPv4 address.
- Connecting over the internet: Enter the host router’s external or public IP address. A local IPv4 address usually identifies a device only within its own network, so it generally won’t work for a friend connecting from elsewhere.
- On the host computer: The host can use
localhostor the computer’s own IP address.
The server setup guide covers the address and port details; it warns that it may be outdated, so menu labels or hosting details may differ in a newer game version.
What the host needs to configure for an internet connection
If the server is running behind a home router and players are connecting from outside that network, the host generally needs to forward the server port on the router. The host should also allow the server application or port through the computer’s firewall. If the server uses a custom port, everyone joining must enter that port instead of 7777.

Fix common connection problems
Check these items in order:
- Address: A player on the same LAN needs the server’s local IPv4 address; a remote player needs the host’s external IP.
- Server status: Confirm the host has started the world or server and that it is still running.
- Port: Confirm the port with the host. The default is 7777, but a custom setting overrides it.
- Router and firewall: For remote connections, confirm the router forwards the server port and the computer firewall allows the connection.
- Compatibility: Confirm that the players’ platforms and game versions can connect to one another.
Host & Play or dedicated server?

IP-and-port joining works only when the clients involved are compatible. In its June 25, 2026 State of the Game update, the Terraria development team described crossplay as available among PC, server, and mobile, while console crossplay was still in development. Because platform support can change, check the host’s current game version and platform compatibility before treating a failed connection as a network problem.
