Choose the right server software first: Java mods need a compatible mod loader and usually matching client files, while plugins need plugin-capable software such as PaperMC, Purpur, or Spigot. On Aternos, install supported projects through its Mods or Plugins catalog; the steps differ.

First, choose a mod, plugin, or modpack

These options use different server software, so decide what you need before installing anything.

Choose Best fit What players need
Mod New content or mechanics that require a Java mod loader. Each player generally needs the matching loader, Minecraft version, and mods.
Plugin Server-side features, commands, or functionality on plugin-capable software. Players generally do not install the plugin on their clients.
Modpack A maintained bundle of mods and configurations installed as a pack. Each player needs a compatible launcher and the same pack.

Aternos describes mods and plugins as separate software paths; compatibility between arbitrary combinations is not established. Check the exact project requirements before planning to use both together. Aternos’s guides: mod installation, plugin installation, and modpacks.

Install Java mods on Aternos

  1. Choose a compatible loader. In the Aternos server panel, open Software and install the loader required by your mod. Aternos lists Forge, Fabric, NeoForge, and Quilt. Check the mod’s supported Minecraft version and loader; Forge has the largest selection in Aternos’s description, but no loader is best for every mod.
  2. Install the mod from the catalog. Open Mods, search for the project, select the version matching your Minecraft version and loader, then install it. Aternos offers mods from CurseForge and Modrinth.
  3. Install dependencies. Read the mod’s requirements and add any required companion mods. For example, Aternos notes that Tinkers’ Construct requires Mantle.
  4. Set up every player’s client. Each player needs the matching loader and version, as well as the same mods. Aternos lists Prism Launcher, Modrinth App, and CurseForge App as launcher options.
  5. Start and connect. Start the server and launch the game. Connect after both have loaded without errors.

Install plugins on Aternos

  1. Use plugin-capable server software. In Software, select software that supports plugins. Aternos lists PaperMC, Purpur, and Spigot, and marks PaperMC as recommended.
  2. Choose a compatible version. Select a Minecraft version supported by the plugin. If changing software, stop the server first; Aternos’s WorldEdit guide describes stopping it, choosing the matching software and version, and installing.
  3. Install the plugin. Open Plugins, search for the plugin, choose a compatible version, and use its download or install control.
  4. Start the server and check it. Watch Console for startup errors. After a plugin starts, its configuration folder is commonly available under Files. Many configuration changes require a server restart.

Install a modpack instead

If you want a maintained bundle rather than selecting mods individually, open Software and choose a supported modpack. Aternos’s modpack flow allows one modpack at a time and does not let you change or add individual mods or configurations through that flow. Every player needs the matching launcher and pack.

If a mod or plugin is missing

Aternos provides a suggestion process, but projects must meet its requirements. These include hosting on supported sites, direct downloads, reasonable popularity, active maintenance, free availability, compatibility and, for modpacks, server files. Aternos says review may take days or weeks; projects can be rejected for technical issues, external-only downloads, distribution restrictions, lack of updates, or other listed reasons. See Aternos’s plugin guidance and mod guidance for the relevant process.

Aternos points users who need arbitrary custom mod or plugin uploads to exaroton, its paid hosting service with full file access. That is an alternative for custom uploads, not a requirement for installing projects available in Aternos’s catalogs.

  • Version or loader mismatch: Check that the Minecraft version and mod loader or server-software family match the project’s supported versions.
  • A mod fails to load: Confirm its dependencies are installed and that every player has the matching mods, loader, and versions.
  • Modpack clients cannot join: Check that clients use the same pack and a compatible current version.
  • A plugin errors on startup: Inspect Console, then check the plugin’s generated files under Files. Restart after configuration changes when needed.
  • The project is not listed: Check Aternos’s suggestion requirements before submitting it.
