To join a Valheim dedicated server, open the game, choose your character, select Join Game, then use the method the host has provided: find the published server in the community list, enter a reachable address in address:port under Join IP, or paste a crossplay join code through Add server. Enter the password when prompted.

The correct method depends on the server backend. Steam-backend servers normally expose ports 2456–2457 and require the host to forward the configured range from the internet. Crossplay servers use a relay, so they do not require router port forwarding for players connecting from outside the host’s local network. Xbox players can join only when crossplay is enabled on both the server and Xbox; Xbox cannot run the dedicated-server process itself.

What you need from the server host
Ask the host for exactly one of these connection details before launching the game:
- Published server name: needed when you intend to find the world in the community-server list.
- Public address and port: needed for a direct connection. The value is entered as
server-address:port, such as203.0.113.10:2456. That example uses a documentation-only address; replace it with the real address supplied by the host. - Crossplay join code: used by a crossplay server through Join Game > Add server.
- Password: required if the host has protected the server.
If you are outside the host’s home or office network, a private address such as a local 192.168.x.x address is normally usable only by devices on that same local network. Remote players need the host’s public address and reachable port, or a crossplay join code. This follows from Iron Gate’s requirement that a Steam-backend server be reachable from the internet and its separate relay-based crossplay design.

Choose the right connection method

There is no universal “Valheim server IP” that works for every world. The address, port, visibility, and backend are properties of the particular server. If a host gives you only a name, use the list. If the host gives you an address and port, use Join IP. If the host gives you a join code, use Add server rather than trying to turn the code into an IP address.
How to join through the community server list
- Confirm that the host has started the dedicated server and published it.
- Launch Valheim and select the character you want to use.
- Open Join Game.
- Search the community-server list for the exact server name supplied by the host.
- Select the matching entry and connect.
- Enter the server password if Valheim requests one.
Names can be similar, so confirm the spelling with the host before assuming that a similarly named entry is the correct world. If the entry does not appear, do not keep waiting indefinitely: ask whether the server is published and whether it uses the backend expected by your platform, then try a direct address or crossplay code.

- Ask the host for the server’s public address and configured port. Do not substitute a private LAN address when you are connecting from another network.
- Launch Valheim, select your character, and open Join Game.
- Choose Join IP.
- Enter the address and port in one field using a colon:
server-address:port. - For a host using the documented default Steam port, the format is commonly
203.0.113.10:2456; use the real address and port from your host instead of this example. - Submit the address, wait for the connection attempt, and enter the password when prompted.
The colon matters: an address on one line and a port in an unrelated field is not the same as the required address:port form. If the host changed the server’s port, the default example is wrong and the host’s value takes precedence.
How to join with a crossplay code
- Confirm with the host that the dedicated server is running with crossplay enabled.
- Request the current join code. Treat it as session-specific connection information rather than a permanent server address.
- Launch Valheim, select your character, and open Join Game.
- Press Add server.
- Paste the code exactly as supplied by the host and submit it.
- Choose the resulting server and enter its password if requested.
Iron Gate’s official FAQ gives the same core instruction: the friend goes to Join Game, presses Add server, and pastes the code. A code that worked before a restart or session change may no longer be valid; request a fresh one rather than editing characters by guesswork.

Steam-backend servers
Iron Gate’s dedicated-server guide documents a default port range of 2456–2457 for the Steam backend. The host must make the configured range reachable from the internet through port forwarding. A player does not configure that router rule in the Join Game screen; the host must complete it before remote friends can connect directly.
Crossplay servers
Crossplay uses a relay. Iron Gate states that relay connection means router port forwarding is not required for access from outside the local network. Players can connect through the community list, a public address and port, or a crossplay join code, with the code generally being the simplest hand-off for a mixed-platform group.

Xbox cannot host the dedicated-server process, but an Xbox can join a dedicated server when crossplay is enabled on both the Xbox and the server. If an Xbox player cannot connect, confirm both settings before changing the address or password.
Microsoft Store and Game Pass
The official FAQ documents cross-platform joining through the crossplay join-code flow. The host should provide the current code, and the player should use Join Game > Add server to paste it.

What the host must set up
Joining is usually a short player-side process, but the host’s configuration determines which options work.
Steam backend: reachable ports
The documented default is the range 2456–2457, not a single universal port for every installation. The host must forward the configured range through the router and make it reachable from the internet. If the host changed the server’s port settings, use those settings when connecting; do not assume 2456.
Crossplay backend: relay access
A crossplay server uses a relay, so the host does not need router port forwarding merely to let players outside the local network access it. Crossplay still has to be enabled on the server, and each player’s platform must support and have crossplay enabled for the intended group.
Publication and credentials
For list discovery, the host must have the server running and published under the expected name. For direct joining, the host must send the correct public address and port. For code joining, the host must send the current code. In all three cases, the password must match exactly when the server requires one.

Port forwarding versus a relay: the practical difference

Port forwarding is therefore a host networking decision, not a player-side password or menu setting. If you are only trying to join, ask which backend is active and request the corresponding connection information.
Troubleshooting a missing or failed connection
The server is not in the list
- Ask the host to confirm that the dedicated server is running and published.
- Check that you searched the exact published name.
- Confirm whether the server is Steam-only or crossplay and whether that backend matches your platform.
- Try Join IP with the host’s public address and port.
- If it is a crossplay server, request a fresh code and use Add server.
“Failed to connect” appears after using Join IP
- Check every character in the address.
- Confirm the colon separates the address and port:
address:port. - Ask whether the host gave you the public address rather than a private LAN address.
- Verify the configured port with the host; the Steam default range is 2456–2457, but a changed configuration takes precedence.
- Ask whether the server is Steam-only or crossplay, then switch to the supported method for that backend.
- For a Steam-backend server, have the host confirm that the configured range is forwarded and reachable from the internet.
An Xbox player cannot join
- Confirm that the dedicated server has crossplay enabled.
- Confirm that crossplay is enabled on the Xbox.
- Use the crossplay code flow if the host supplied a code.
- Remember that Xbox can join a dedicated server but cannot host the dedicated-server process itself.
The address works for the host but not for a remote friend
This usually indicates that the host shared a private LAN address or that the required Steam-backend port range is not reachable from the internet. A private address can work for players on the same local network while failing for an outside player. Ask the host for the public endpoint, or use a crossplay code when the server supports crossplay.
The join code is invalid or no longer works
Request a new code from the host after a server restart or session change. Paste the new value through Join Game > Add server without adding spaces or changing characters.

A dedicated server can run on a spare machine maintained by the host, or the group can rent server capacity from a hosting company. The choice affects the host’s work more than the player’s menu path.

Rented hosting is an alternative to running the world on a spare home machine, not a different player-side joining procedure. Before committing, the host should verify current pricing, backup policy, crossplay support, uptime expectations, and region availability; those terms vary by provider and can change.

A reliable hand-off checklist
Use this short exchange to avoid most failed first attempts:
- The host states whether the server is Steam backend or crossplay.
- The host says whether the server is discoverable by name, and provides the exact published name if it is.
- For direct joining, the host sends the public address and port in one message, for example
server-address:2456when that is genuinely the configured port. - For crossplay, the host sends the current join code and identifies it as a code, not an IP address.
- The host sends the password separately or clearly labels it.
- The player confirms the platform, opens Join Game, and uses the matching method.
This separates the four details that are often confused: server name, public address, port, and crossplay code.
Fast decision guide
- You have only a server name: search the community list.
- You have an address and port: choose Join IP and enter them as
address:port. - You have a crossplay code: choose Add server and paste it.
- You are on Xbox or Microsoft Store/Game Pass: confirm crossplay is enabled, then use the crossplay flow supplied by the host.
- You are outside the host’s network and the server is Steam backend: the host must provide a public endpoint and make the configured 2456–2457 range, or the changed range, reachable through port forwarding.
- You are outside the host’s network and the server is crossplay: a relay removes the need for router port forwarding; ask for the current code if the list is inconvenient.
Official guidance and dates
Iron Gate’s official dedicated-server guide says that a Crossplay server can be reached with its public IP address and port number, a join code, or the server list. The same guide documents 2456–2457 as the default Steam-server port range and explains the port-forwarding requirement for that backend. Iron Gate’s official FAQ, dated February 7, 2025, states that Xbox can join a dedicated server when crossplay is enabled but cannot host one, and documents the Join Game > Add server code-pasting flow. These are configuration facts; the host’s actual address, port, publication status, password, and current code still determine whether a particular connection succeeds.
