What you need before joining
Windrose can accept players through an invite code or through a direct network address. The owner controls which method is active, so ask for the method, the exact code or address, and the password if the server is protected. You cannot use an invite code while the owner has configured the server for Direct IP, or vice versa.

- An online server: Confirm that the owner’s server status says Online, rather than sleeping, stopped or still starting.
- A completed tutorial: Current hosting guidance says each player should finish the Windrose single-player tutorial once before trying to join a multiplayer server.
- The exact credentials: Invite codes are case-sensitive. Direct-IP connections require the complete hostname and port, not just the hostname.
- A compatible game installation: Use the same current Windrose build available to you and follow any update prompt before connecting.
If you are joining a self-hosted Windows server, the owner’s computer must remain powered on, connected to the internet and running the server process for the duration of your session.
Join with a Windrose invite code
This is the normal route for a friend’s server when the owner has enabled invite-code access. Shockbyte documented the following menu sequence on 14 April 2026, and it matches the flow described in current Windrose hosting instructions.

- Get the code and password. Ask the owner to copy the invite code exactly. Request the password separately if the server is protected.
- Launch Windrose and select Play.
- Choose Connect to Server. This is where Windrose accepts server credentials; you do not need a public server browser.
- Enter the invite code and select Find. Paste the code instead of retyping it. Uppercase and lowercase letters are different.
- Select the returned server. Check that the result is the world your friend described before proceeding.
- Click Connect.
- Enter the password when prompted. Passwords are supplied by the server owner; Windrose does not reveal a protected server’s password in the client.
The owner can give the same invite code to every friend who should have access. A code is not a player-specific invitation, so treat it like a private server credential and share it only with the intended group.
Where a server owner finds the invite code
For a self-hosted dedicated server, start the server and read the code printed in its console. The official Windrose guide, updated 18 May 2026 for game version 0.10.0.5.120-073042fb, recommends launching StartServerForeground.bat when you want visible logs. The alternative launcher is WindroseServer.exe.
Read the code from the server console
- Open the dedicated-server folder on the host PC.
- Launch
StartServerForeground.batfor a console window that stays visible, or runWindroseServer.exe. - Wait for startup to finish, then locate the generated invite code in the console output.
- Copy the code and send it to players through a private channel.
Recover a code that has scrolled away
If the startup text is no longer visible, open the server folder’s R5/ServerDescription.json file in a text editor. Find the InviteCode value and copy the value between its quotation marks. The official documentation specifies that invite codes use only numerals, lowercase letters and uppercase letters, have at least six characters, and are case-sensitive.

Do not add spaces, punctuation or quotation marks when sending the code. If you change the value in a configuration file, restart the server before players try the new code so the running process and the file agree.
Join a server by Direct IP
Some hosts use a network address instead of an invite code. Haptic’s August 2026 guidance notes that Windrose has no general server browser and that only one join method is active at a time. A Direct-IP server therefore requires the owner to switch the server’s join method, restart it, and send players the displayed address.
What the owner must do
- Open the hosting dashboard and change the server’s join method to Direct IP.
- Apply the change and restart the server. A restart is required after enabling Direct IP; connecting before the reboot can produce a timeout even when the address is correct.
- Copy the displayed
hostname:portvalue exactly and send the complete string to players.
What the player must do
- Launch Windrose and open Play → Connect to Server.
- Switch to the Direct IP tab.
- Paste the complete
hostname:port, including the colon and port number. - Submit the address and connect to the returned server. Enter the owner’s password if prompted.
Do not paste an invite code into the Direct IP field or omit the port. If the owner has switched back to invite-code access, use the invite-code tab instead; the two methods are alternatives, not simultaneous connection paths.

Invite code or Direct IP: which should you use?

Ask the owner which method is active before troubleshooting. Trying to repair an invite code while the server is configured for Direct IP, or trying an IP address against an invite-code server, will not solve the underlying mismatch.

Host-session game
A normal hosted game is tied to the host’s active session. Friends can join while that host is running the world, but the session is unavailable when the host closes the game or disconnects. This arrangement is usually sufficient for an occasional co-op session when everyone plays at the same time.
Dedicated server
The official Windrose documentation describes a dedicated server as a world that is “always running.” In practice, that means the world can remain available when the owner is not personally playing, provided the server machine or hosting service stays online. The owner remains responsible for keeping the process running, applying updates, maintaining backups and resolving crashes.

On Steam, install the free Windrose Dedicated Server tool from the Steam Tools section, browse its local files, and follow the simple or advanced setup supplied with the tool. The official guide says the tool is also available free on Steam for players who use the Epic Games Store or Stove. When copying a server folder, place the copy outside the main Windrose game folder; the guide warns that running a copied server from inside the game directory can prevent it from working correctly.

How many players can join?
Dot Esports reported support for up to eight players in its 14 April 2026 coverage. The same report notes that the developer cautions that going above four players may significantly affect server performance. Eight is therefore a stated upper capacity, not a guarantee that every world, host machine or network will run smoothly at that size.
- For a small group, start with the normal invite-code method and monitor whether players experience lag or disconnects.
- If performance degrades as the group grows, reduce the number of simultaneous players before changing network settings.
- When choosing a dedicated host, check whether the plan can handle your expected player count and whether the provider supplies monitoring, backups and restart controls.
Windrose hosting guidance identifies Nitrado as the game’s official hosting partner. Availability, regional pricing and current partner terms can change, so confirm those details directly with the provider before purchasing a hosted server.

Troubleshooting a failed connection
The server does not appear after I select Find
- Confirm that the owner sent an invite code rather than a Direct-IP address. A
hostname:portbelongs in the Direct IP tab. - Paste the code again. Case differences, a missing character or an accidental space can prevent a match.
- Ask the owner to verify that the server status is Online, not sleeping, stopped or still booting.
- Check that the owner has not changed the active join method since sending the credentials.
The invite code is rejected
- Request a fresh copy from the owner and paste it without quotation marks or spaces.
- Ask the owner to read the
InviteCodeentry inR5/ServerDescription.jsonif the console output has scrolled away. - Verify that the value has at least six characters and uses only letters and numbers, as required by the official server guide.
- Make sure the server process was restarted after any configuration change.
Direct IP times out
- Check every character in the address, including the port after the colon.
- Confirm that the owner actually enabled Direct IP and restarted the server afterward.
- Ask whether the address is still current; a host can change the displayed endpoint when restarting or moving a server.
- Ensure that both sides are using the Direct IP tab rather than the invite-code search field.
The password prompt fails
- Ask the owner for the current password; do not assume it is the same as the invite code.
- Paste the password exactly as supplied and check for leading or trailing spaces.
- If the owner recently changed the password, have them restart the server and send the new value again.
I completed the steps but still cannot join
- Finish the single-player tutorial if this is your first Windrose session.
- Restart Windrose after installing an update, then retry the same method.
- Have the owner confirm that the host machine is still powered on and connected if the server is self-hosted on Windows.
- Test with one player first. If one connection works but a larger group struggles, the issue may be capacity or server performance rather than credentials.
Safe and reliable server sharing
Invite codes and Direct-IP addresses are access information. Send them only to people who should enter the world, and change the code or password if it has been distributed more widely than intended. Keep a private copy of the current configuration so the owner can recover the address after a restart or migration.
For a self-hosted server, leave the host computer awake and connected whenever friends expect to play. A dedicated server is only “always running” while its process and machine remain available. If the owner needs to shut down, tell players first so they do not mistake the offline status for an invalid code.

Those answers identify nearly every setup issue without changing unrelated settings. Once the method, address and server status agree, Windrose’s connection process is short: authenticate with the supplied details, select the correct world and join.
