To recover a YouTube stream after a power cut, configure the Mac mini to start when power returns, protect it and its network connection with a suitably sized UPS if you need to ride through short outages, and set up and test the encoder’s restart and reconnect behavior. These are separate steps: macOS can start the computer, but that alone does not guarantee that an encoder will reopen or that YouTube will resume receiving the broadcast.
What has to recover after a power cut
A working recovery chain has several links: power returns, the Mac mini starts, the network becomes available, the encoder runs and sends video and audio, and YouTube receives the feed. A failure at any link can leave the stream offline even if the Mac itself has restarted.
- Brief interruption: A UPS may keep the Mac mini and selected network equipment powered, depending on its capacity, load and remaining battery.
- Longer outage or exhausted UPS: Configure the Mac’s power-failure startup option so it can start when power is restored.
- Broadcast recovery: Configure and test the particular encoder and YouTube stream settings. Do not assume either will resume automatically after a full reboot.
Make the Mac mini start when power returns
Use the Energy settings available on your Mac
- Open Apple menu > System Settings > Energy.
- Look for the power-failure startup option. Apple documents the setting “Start up automatically after a power failure”; some desktop Mac documentation also describes “Start up when power is connected,” with choices such as Never, After power failure and Always.
- Choose the behavior you want from the controls actually shown on your Mac. Apple notes that not all settings are available on every Mac, so the label and availability can vary by model and macOS version.
- Save or close Settings, then test the behavior under controlled conditions before relying on it for an unattended broadcast.
Optional: use Apple’s Terminal controls
For administrators using Terminal or management tools, Apple documents the systemsetup options -setrestartpowerfailure and -setWaitForStartupAfterPowerFailure. The startup delay must be zero or a multiple of 30 seconds. Consult Apple’s command reference for the supported syntax and requirements: Use the command line to manage computers. For most users, the Energy settings are the simpler path.
Use a UPS if the stream should survive a short outage
A UPS can bridge a short interruption or give the Mac time to shut down cleanly when its battery reaches a chosen threshold. In macOS, Apple documents UPS Options in desktop Mac Energy settings, where you can set shutdown by time or remaining battery level. The available controls depend on the setup.

Size the UPS for the combined power draw of the equipment you want protected—at minimum, consider the Mac mini, and include the modem, router or other network equipment if the stream depends on them. Choose a target runtime and shutdown threshold that fit your needs. Apple’s guidance does not establish a specific runtime for a given UPS or load, so use the selected UPS’s load information and verify the result in your own setup.
A UPS and automatic restart address different failure cases: battery backup may keep a stream running through a brief cut; automatic startup helps the Mac come back after power is lost and restored. Neither, by itself, proves that the encoder or YouTube broadcast will recover.

Prepare the encoder and YouTube stream
Confirm the stream URL and key
YouTube’s encoder workflow uses a stream URL and stream key from Live Control Room. Enter them in the encoder to send the feed. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address,” so keep the key private. Reusing stream settings can retain stream configuration and keys; check the settings for the particular live event you intend to recover. Separate YouTube auto-start from Mac and encoder startup
YouTube’s Auto-start & Auto-stop options govern starting or stopping a stream from an encoder. They do not establish that macOS will reopen an encoder, restore a user session or restart a broadcast after a reboot. Configure the specific encoder and Mac startup or login behavior you use, then verify whether it reconnects to the existing stream or needs a manual restart. Behavior is encoder-specific; YouTube’s general workflow does not guarantee that a third-party app will resume after a full system restart.

Test the complete recovery chain
Before depending on unattended recovery, use a private or unlisted test as appropriate and check each stage rather than treating a powered-on Mac as proof that the broadcast is back.
- Confirm the Mac starts after the power interruption using the setting available on your model.
- Check that the required user session and network connection are available after startup, including any network equipment that lost power.
- Confirm the encoder launches or can be restarted, and that it is sending the intended video and audio.
- Check the YouTube preview and stream health, then verify that the watch page is accessible and shows the stream as expected.
- If you have configured a backup encoder, exercise its failover behavior. YouTube recommends testing encoder setup, preview and health monitoring, event accessibility and backup-encoder failover.

If the stream does not come back

What YouTube’s archive rule does—and does not—mean
YouTube says that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That is an archiving rule, not a promise that a stream will restart or resume after a power cut. Check the live event and watch page after recovery rather than treating archiving as evidence that the broadcast stayed online.
