You can change the videos in an OBS rotation while your YouTube gaming broadcast stays live: manage the playlist in OBS, not in YouTube Live Control Room. OBS documents a VLC Video source with playlist, loop, and shuffle options. It does not guarantee that editing an active playlist will be seamless, so test the exact change in your setup before using it on a live broadcast.
Where to change the rotation
The rotation is part of your stream’s visual content. If OBS is sending the broadcast, its sources determine what viewers see; the YouTube Live Control Room handles stream setup and metadata, not the contents of an OBS media playlist. YouTube’s live stream settings cover settings such as stream details and the stream key.
For a rotation of local video files, OBS’s VLC Video source is the documented playlist-capable option. OBS lists playlist, loop, and shuffle controls for that source in its Media Sources documentation.
Set up a playlist in OBS
- Install VLC. OBS requires VLC for the VLC Video source to appear. Match VLC’s architecture to OBS; for 64-bit OBS, use 64-bit VLC.
- Add the source. In OBS, select the scene where the rotation should appear, click the + in the Sources panel, and choose VLC Video. If it is missing, check that VLC is installed and that its architecture matches OBS.
- Add your video files. In the VLC Video source properties, add the local media files you want in the rotation. Confirm the list and playback in OBS before you rely on it live.
- Choose playback behavior. Enable Loop if the playlist should restart after its final item. Enable Shuffle if you want items played in a randomized order rather than the listed sequence. Leave either option off when it does not match the rotation you intend.
- Check the scene output. Preview the source in the scene and verify the videos appear as expected. If you use other scenes or overlays, confirm the playlist is in the scene that is actually on air.
Update an active rotation carefully
OBS documents playlist support, but its documentation does not promise that changing a playlist while its source is live will avoid a playback interruption or visible transition. The result may depend on your OBS setup and the way you make the change. Rehearse the exact edit—adding, removing, or reordering files—before the broadcast.

For a live change, keep a backup scene or a brief transition ready as an operational precaution. If a seamless update is essential, do not assume it will happen: test it with the same source, files, and scene arrangement you plan to use on air.
Keep rotation changes separate from YouTube stream settings
Changing the playlist in OBS changes the media content OBS sends. Changing a title, category, or other stream details is a separate task in YouTube Live Control Room. Use YouTube’s stream settings for setup and metadata, and OBS for the media rotation. YouTube’s live streaming guide covers getting started with a live stream.

Troubleshooting
- VLC Video is not available in the Sources menu: Install VLC, then check that its architecture matches OBS. OBS specifically notes the requirement for VLC and the matching architecture for 64-bit OBS.
- The playlist does not repeat: Open the VLC Video source properties and check whether Loop is enabled.
- The videos play in an unexpected order: Check whether Shuffle is enabled. Turn it off if you need the listed sequence.
- The intended change is not visible to viewers: Confirm you edited the VLC Video source used by the scene currently on air, rather than a source in another scene.
- A live edit causes an interruption or unexpected transition: The official documentation does not establish seamless in-place editing. Use the rehearsed backup scene or transition, then test the same edit method again off air.
