Harvest honey or honeycomb without angering bees
- Check the nest or hive. Wait until it is full before trying to collect honey or honeycomb.
- Place and light a campfire below it. Its smoke calms the bees while you harvest. Minecraft’s [official bee guide] describes this as allowing collection without risk of attack; Bedrock’s 1.14.0 release notes also say to place a campfire underneath a nest or hive to keep bees calm.
- Choose the tool for what you want. Use a glass bottle to collect honey, or shears to collect honeycomb.
- Leave the bees and nest alone. Do not hit bees or break the nest as a way to harvest its contents.
The basic campfire method is supported by official material for both editions: Bedrock 1.14.0 release notes document the smoke effect, and Java snapshot 19W46A records the “Bee Our Guest” advancement for safely collecting honey with a campfire. Exact behavior around smoke obstruction or distance is not established uniformly across current Java and Bedrock versions, so avoid relying on a particular gap or blocked path.
Why are bees attacking?
Bees can attack when provoked. Minecraft’s official guide warns that breaking a nest or collecting honey can lead to bees in the area attacking. Use smoke before interacting with the nest or hive, and do not strike the bees.
What to do if bees are already angry
Run away and give them space. Retreating is the official guide’s advice once bees have become angry; do not try to finish harvesting while they are attacking.

Moving a bee nest is different from harvesting
If you want to relocate the nest rather than collect its contents, the official guide recommends waiting until night and using a Silk Touch tool. Breaking a nest during ordinary harvesting is not a safe substitute for collecting honey or honeycomb.

Bedrock 1.14.0 release notes also document using a dispenser to shear honeycomb. The campfire remains the documented way to calm bees during collection; the notes do not establish every automation setup or smoke-path edge case across later versions.
