Run FFmpeg inside a named tmux session on the remote host, then detach from tmux before closing SSH. The process stays attached to the remote tmux session rather than your local terminal, so an SSH disconnect alone need not stop the stream. This does not protect against a host shutdown, an FFmpeg crash, or every failure in the connection to YouTube.
What you need before starting
- A remote host that will stay powered on, with network access and enough resources for the FFmpeg job.
- FFmpeg and tmux installed on that host.
- A YouTube Live stream configured in Live Control Room. YouTube’s encoder workflow requires the server URL and stream key; get the current values from YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
- A source file or input that FFmpeg can read, plus suitable encoding and mapping options for that input.
Treat the stream key as a credential: do not expose it in screenshots, public logs, or shared shell history. YouTube recommends RTMPS for Live ingestion, describing it as a secure extension to RTMP. Use the current ingest endpoint and key shown for your stream; do not copy an example destination as if it were your credentials. See YouTube’s encoder settings guidance.
Keep FFmpeg running with tmux
- Connect to the remote host. Open SSH to the machine that will run FFmpeg. The multiplexer and FFmpeg must run there—not in a local terminal whose process ends with the SSH shell.
- Create or reconnect to a named tmux session. Run:
tmux new-session -A -s youtube-liveThe
-Aoption attaches to the named session if it already exists, or creates it if it does not. - Start FFmpeg inside that session. For a file input, FFmpeg documents this real-time streaming pattern:
ffmpeg -re -i myfile -f flv rtmp://myserver/live/mystreammyfileand the destination are illustrative. Adapt the input, output options, codecs, maps, and destination to your stream, using YouTube’s current server URL and stream key. Avoid putting a real key in a command that will be retained in shell history or visible to other users on the host. - Detach without stopping FFmpeg. Press Ctrl+b, release, then press d. This detaches your terminal from tmux; it does not send a stop signal to the process. You can now close SSH.
- Reattach later to inspect the session. SSH back into the same host and account, then run:
tmux attach-session -t youtube-liveYou should return to the tmux window and see FFmpeg’s terminal output if it is still running.
The tmux project describes this use as protecting remote programs from connection drops by running them inside tmux: tmux Getting Started.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Understand what tmux does—and does not—recover
tmux separates the process’s terminal from the SSH client connection. It is not a process supervisor or an RTMP reconnect mechanism. If the host reboots, loses power, runs out of resources, or FFmpeg exits, the detached session cannot keep the stream alive. You would need a separate restart strategy for process or host failure.
A temporary output-network failure is a different problem. FFmpeg documents a FIFO muxer pattern that continues real-time processing during a temporary network outage and attempts recovery every second indefinitely. It is not a guarantee for every server, FFmpeg build, or failure mode; test it with your actual input and YouTube destination. The manual’s example uses an illustrative RTMP host, not a usable YouTube endpoint:

Check YouTube’s settings and limits
Choose encoder settings for the resolution, frame rate, and codec you actually intend to send. YouTube’s current guidance, accessed in 2026, gives recommended H.264 bitrates of 14 Mbps for 2160p at 60 fps and 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. These are YouTube recommendations for those settings, not universal minimum internet speeds. Consult the full resolution, frame-rate, and codec bitrate table before choosing a target.

YouTube’s current guidance accessed in 2026 says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. It also lists limits of 10 active streams per channel and 3 active streams per stream key. Check YouTube’s encoder streaming instructions and live-stream eligibility guidance for applicable account requirements and current details.
Troubleshoot a stream that stopped or went offline
- SSH closed and FFmpeg stopped: It may have been launched outside tmux. Reconnect, create or attach to the named session, and start the job inside it.
- The tmux session is missing: Confirm you reconnected to the same host and account. A host reboot or failure can also end the session; tmux does not restore it after reboot.
- FFmpeg is visible but YouTube is not receiving the stream: Check the current server URL and stream key in YouTube Live Control Room, the output protocol, and FFmpeg’s error output. Keep the key private when inspecting or sharing logs.
- The session remains but the output connection failed: tmux only preserves the terminal session. Consider testing FFmpeg’s FIFO recovery options with the actual endpoint and build; do not assume they handle every outage.
- The stream is unstable despite a live process: Compare the configured resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate with YouTube’s current encoder recommendations, and verify that the remote host and network can sustain the job.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a continuous YouTube stream of uploaded video rather than a custom FFmpeg session, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it loops uploaded video, supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
