The model is not entirely static. Turning the handle at the base makes Yoshi run with Mario on his back, and rotating the dial behind Yoshi’s head moves his tongue in and out. A cover that fits the outline but traps the handle or presses against the dial is not a practical fit for an owner who wants to demonstrate the mechanism.
A case can reduce the amount of airborne dust that settles directly on the bricks. It cannot be treated as a laboratory dust seal, and the available product information does not establish that an enclosure eliminates cleaning altogether. Dust can still enter through joints, openings or when the case is opened.

Choose the enclosure by internal clearance
Check the three dimensions in the same orientation
Compare the model’s height, width and depth with the case’s internal height, width and depth. Do not compare the model with an external case measurement: acrylic thickness, a base, a lid and any frame all consume usable space.

On the listed figures, the case has more internal width, depth and height than the model’s stated footprint. That does not replace a fit check. “Over 40 cm” is not an exact maximum, and the model’s highest or rearmost elements may sit differently depending on how it is positioned on the base.
Allow operating space, not just packing space
Measure the clearance needed for the handle to turn without touching a wall, floor or lid. Also check the space behind Yoshi’s head for the tongue dial. If the case is only intended for a static display, those controls may remain inaccessible; decide that before ordering rather than discovering it after assembly.

Look for interference at the model’s corners, the underside of the base and any raised decorative elements. A snug fit can make placing or removing the model risky, especially when the case has to be lifted over the top. A little unused air space is more useful than a cover that has to be forced into position.

Verify the current listing before paying
Retail dimensions, construction details, stock and price can change. Kingdom Brick Supply’s cited listing describes 3 mm acrylic and approximately 32.8 × 13.6 × 42.4 cm internal dimensions; confirm those figures on the live product page. Wicked Brick also lists a case for this specific set and uses “dust-free” marketing language. Treat that wording as the seller’s claim, not as an independently measured guarantee.

Prepare the display location first
A case works best when the model is placed in a relatively stable location. Before assembling the display, check the following:

- Clear opening path: Measure the route from the assembly area to the final shelf, including doorways and cabinet openings. The enclosure may be wider or taller than the model.
- Low-touch placement: Keep the display where people will not brush against the acrylic or repeatedly open the lid. Every opening is an opportunity for dust to enter.
- Safe reach: If the handle and tongue dial are meant to be used, leave enough room in front and behind the case to operate them without pushing the enclosure.
- Lighting and heat: Avoid placing the case where a hot lamp, heater or direct sun warms the acrylic or the model. The supplied product information does not specify a thermal or ultraviolet rating, so do not assume one.
Install a case without stressing the model
- Finish and inspect the build. Confirm that the base is fully seated and that Mario, Yoshi, the handle and tongue mechanism move as intended before enclosing it.
- Clean the empty enclosure. Remove manufacturing dust and fingerprints from the acrylic while you can reach every panel. Follow the seller’s care directions for that case.

- Close the case gently. Seat panels without pressing down on the roof or leaning on the walls. Recheck that no brick is trapped against a panel.
- Label the orientation if necessary. If the case can be opened from only one side, mark the front so future cleaning does not involve unnecessary handling.
A conservative cleaning routine for the model
LEGO’s cited product page describes the set and its functions but does not provide a dusting method for the assembled model. The following is a cautious owner routine rather than an official LEGO care instruction.

For light surface dust
- Move the case to a stable, well-lit work area or open it where the model cannot be knocked.
- Wash and dry your hands before touching the model. Hold the base or another broad, solid section instead of a small lever, tongue, flag or decorative element.
- Use a clean, dry, very soft brush or cloth with light pressure, working from upper surfaces downward. The aim is to lift loose dust, not push it into seams.
- Pause around the handle, dial and other moving interfaces. Do not force a brush into a mechanism or turn a control while a tool is in contact with it.
- Inspect the result from the front, sides and top, then return the model to the enclosure and close it.
Do not present this routine as a LEGO-approved tool list: no such method is supplied in the cited product information. Avoid improvised methods that could snag a part, generate static or drive grit between bricks.
For visible grime or a stuck particle
Stop and identify the affected part before applying any liquid. The available sources do not establish a LEGO-approved wet-cleaning procedure for this set. Kingdom Brick Supply’s listing gives care directions for its acrylic case: use mild soap or detergent and lukewarm water with a clean, soft cloth. Those directions apply to the acrylic enclosure, not to LEGO bricks or the model’s mechanism.

- Remove the model or place it safely outside the cleaning area before washing a panel.
- Use lukewarm water and a small amount of mild soap or detergent as the listing directs. Do not use a rough pad or abrasive powder.
- Wipe with a clean, soft cloth, using light pressure to avoid scratching the acrylic.
- Rinse or wipe away residue with clean water, then dry with another clean soft cloth.
- Allow every panel and joint to dry before reinstalling the model and closing the case.

Set a maintenance plan that matches your room
There is no published statistic establishing how quickly dust accumulates on 71438 or how often it must be cleaned. Use inspection rather than a universal calendar:
- After installation: Check the case seams, base and upper surfaces once the display has settled.
- During normal ownership: Look through the panels whenever you dust the surrounding shelf. If you can see a film, clean the case; if loose particles are visible on the model, use the conservative dry routine.
- After opening the case: Inspect the top and rear surfaces, because opening and closing can disturb dust at the edges.

The handle or tongue dial cannot move
Open the enclosure and identify the contact point. Reposition the model only if the base remains stable and the case still protects the highest elements. Otherwise choose a deeper or taller enclosure. A static cover is acceptable only if you are comfortable giving up access to those controls.
Dust appears inside shortly after cleaning
Inspect the lid, door and panel joints for gaps, and note whether the case was opened during the period. A display case reduces exposure; it does not prove an airtight seal. Clean the enclosure again, close it fully and reduce unnecessary opening rather than claiming the model is permanently dust-free.
The acrylic looks hazy or scratched

- Are the dimensions explicitly internal?
- Is the internal height greater than the model’s stated “over 40 cm,” with practical room above the highest piece?
