The easiest way to keep your Minecraft items after dying is to enable the built-in keepInventory gamerule:
/gamerule keepInventory true
It keeps your carried inventory, armor, and off-hand items when you respawn. The command works in both Java Edition and Bedrock Edition, but cheats, permissions, menus, and achievement or trophy consequences vary by edition, platform, world, and server.

Turn on Keep Inventory
Java Edition: before creating a world
- Select Create New World.
- Open the Game Rules or world-options section.
- Find Keep Inventory or Keep inventory after death.
- Turn it on and create the world.
Menu labels can change between releases. If you do not see the setting immediately, search the Game Rules list for “inventory.”
Java Edition: an existing single-player world
If commands are already available, enter:
/gamerule keepInventory true
If they are not, pause the game, choose Open to LAN, enable Allow Cheats, and start the LAN world. Then enter the command in chat. This temporarily enables commands for that session; the setting ends when the session closes.

Bedrock Edition
Open the world’s settings, go to Game or Game Rules, and enable Keep Inventory. You can also use chat if commands are permitted:
/gamerule keepinventory true
Bedrock documentation displays the rule name as keepinventory, while Java commonly displays keepInventory. Use the spelling suggested by in-game autocomplete if necessary. Enabling cheats or command access can affect achievements or trophies in Bedrock, depending on the platform and world configuration, so check the warning before proceeding. Microsoft’s gamerule documentation defines this rule as controlling whether players keep their inventory after death.
Realms and multiplayer servers
keepInventory normally changes the world or server rule for everyone, not just one player. You may need operator or administrator permissions, and ordinary Realm members generally cannot change it freely. Server plugins, configurations, or house rules may also override normal behavior.
Recommended Free Tools
To restore ordinary item drops, use:
/gamerule keepInventory false
On Java Edition, entering /gamerule keepInventory queries the current value. Syntax and output can differ on Bedrock. If the command fails, try /help gamerule, use autocomplete, confirm your permissions, and check which edition and version the world uses.

What Keep Inventory actually preserves
In ordinary Survival or Adventure play, death normally sends you to a valid spawn point and drops carried items at the death location. With Keep Inventory enabled, your inventory, armor, and off-hand items remain with you instead.
It is not a complete death-proof setting:
- Experience is normally lost on death; Keep Inventory is primarily an inventory rule, not an experience-retention guarantee.
- Active status effects are removed when you respawn.
- Items with Curse of Vanishing disappear on death instead of becoming ordinary recoverable drops.
- Hardcore is a separate mode. Do not treat Keep Inventory as a normal safety net for continued Hardcore play; behavior and restrictions depend on the edition and version.
Keep Inventory is a built-in game rule, not an exploit. It is a good choice for private worlds where everyone agrees, especially for beginners, children, casual builders, and players who prefer exploration without a severe death penalty. Players seeking standard Survival difficulty may prefer normal drops and better preparation.
If you already died: recover your items
When Keep Inventory was off, act quickly and avoid turning a recovery attempt into a second disaster:

- Plan the route before leaving. Bring food, blocks, a weapon, and other cheap essentials rather than another full set of valuables.
- Return to the death site as soon as practical.
- Protect yourself first from the hazard that caused the death. Do not rush back into lava, fire, a hostile mob area, or an unstable cave.
- Collect irreplaceable items first if your inventory space is limited.
- Move the recovered gear into a safe chest or Ender Chest before continuing.
Dropped items can disappear after roughly five minutes while the relevant chunk is loaded. This is not best understood as a guaranteed five-minute countdown from the exact instant of death in every situation: the ordinary despawn timer matters when the death area is loaded. Other players, farms, chunk-loading systems, or server activity can load the area, so do not assume an unloaded death site is permanently safe. Minecraft’s official guide to spawning and dying explains the recovery timing and common hazards.

Use a Recovery Compass
A Recovery Compass points toward your most recent death location. It is useful when you remember dying but cannot find the exact cave, structure, or route back.
It does not locate your items. It points to the latest death, which may not be the death where your valuable equipment was lost. It also cannot recover items that have despawned, burned, fallen into the void, or been collected by another player.
The compass is dimension-sensitive: it does not function normally when you are in a different dimension from the death location. Return to the correct dimension before relying on it. Minecraft’s Recovery Compass guide describes these limitations.
Clever ways to make death less costly
Store valuables in an Ender Chest
An Ender Chest is one of the best alternatives to Keep Inventory. Its contents are linked to your personal Ender Chest inventory, so losing the physical chest does not erase what was stored inside. You need another Ender Chest, or suitable access to one, to retrieve those items.
Rank #4
- Skins! We have biome settlers, city folk, town folk, and more!
- The Nether and all its inhabitants. Fight Ghasts and make friends with Pigmen
- Cross platform play for up to five players between Pocket Edition and Windows 10
- Revamped touch controls, controller support, and a controller mapping screen
- Enhanced Weather effects! Accumulating snow and more
It protects only what is stored inside. Items you are carrying outside the chest still drop normally, and you should still carry food, tools, blocks, and an emergency item.
Do not confuse shulker boxes with Ender Chests
A shulker box is excellent for organization and transport, but it is still part of your inventory. If you die while carrying one, it drops with everything else. If you recover the box, its contents remain inside; if the box is destroyed, its contents are not magically preserved.
Carry a Totem of Undying
A Totem of Undying can trigger its resurrection effect when held in the main hand or off-hand during many lethal events. It is consumed when activated and does not make you invulnerable. It cannot solve every situation, including a fall into the void, and you may still die from continued lava, suffocation, or other damage afterward.
Save Totems for high-risk trips involving valuable equipment or dangerous enemies rather than treating one as a universal guarantee. Minecraft’s death guide recommends them for dangerous situations.
Best Value
- Play and share with friends on console, mobile and Windows 10
- discover community creations in the new in-game store
- access new mini games and game modes through servers
Prepare for the environment
- Wear armor with strong Protection enchantments.
- Use Feather Falling boots for caves, towers, and other vertical areas.
- Carry a shield when facing mobs against which it is useful.
- Bring dependable food with good hunger and saturation value.
- Carry a water bucket where water can be used for falls, fire, or movement.
- Use Fire Resistance potions for Nether and lava exploration.
- Carry blocks to seal lava, make cover, bridge gaps, or escape.
- Keep spare equipment, food, and blocks at a nearby safe outpost.
Beds can establish a nearby respawn point in suitable dimensions. Beds explode when used in the Nether or End, so use them there only with the appropriate precautions; a respawn anchor is the relevant alternative in the Nether and must be charged.
Understand lava-resistant gear
Most dropped items can burn in fire or lava. Netherite equipment and blocks are fire- and lava-resistant, but they are not immune to every loss: the void, inaccessible terrain, despawn, and other hazards can still remove them. Treat Netherite as more recoverable in lava, not indestructible.
Use coordinates and marked routes
- Record coordinates before entering caves, structures, the Nether, or the End.
- Use Java’s coordinate display or enable coordinate display in Bedrock world settings where available.
- Place torches and distinctive blocks consistently.
- Mark routes between bases, portals, and mining areas.
- Keep a screenshot or written record of portal coordinates.
- Use a map or Recovery Compass when appropriate.
Navigation matters especially in the Nether, where terrain and portal distances make ordinary backtracking difficult.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →When your items may be gone forever
- Lava or fire: ordinary items may burn before you can return.
- The void: items that fall beyond the playable world should be treated as unrecoverable.
- Despawning: dropped items can disappear after the relevant loaded-area timer expires.
- Curse of Vanishing: affected items disappear on death.
- A second death: dying again can create another loss event and make the first recovery much harder.
- Other players: someone else may collect the drops, particularly on multiplayer servers.
A Recovery Compass can identify a death location, but it cannot undo any of these outcomes.
Choose the right approach
| Player or situation | Best approach |
|---|---|
| Beginner or casual builder | Enable Keep Inventory if reducing frustration matters more than the default penalty. |
| Standard Survival player | Keep normal drops and use storage, spawn points, coordinates, and recovery supplies. |
| Multiplayer server or Realm | Ask the owner or administrator before changing a world-wide gamerule. |
| Achievement-focused Bedrock player | Check the cheat and achievement consequences for the specific platform and world first. |
| Nether or End explorer | Carry appropriate protection, Fire Resistance, a Totem, an Ender Chest, and recorded coordinates. |
A middle ground is to store rare valuables in an Ender Chest, carry a Recovery Compass, establish safe outposts, and take only mission-essential gear. In a private world, you can also enable Keep Inventory for a difficult expedition and turn it off afterward—but remember that this changes the shared world rule while enabled.
Quick troubleshooting
- “Unknown gamerule” or a rejected command
- Check the edition, use autocomplete, and try the local spelling:
keepInventoryin Java orkeepinventoryas shown in Bedrock documentation. - “You do not have permission”
- Cheats may be disabled, or you may lack operator privileges. Ask the world owner or server administrator.
- The command is unavailable
- In Java single-player, use Open to LAN with Allow Cheats for the current session. Bedrock worlds may require the relevant permissions or settings to be enabled.
- Your items are not at the death marker
- Check lava, fire, the void, nearby flowing water, inaccessible ledges, despawn timing, and whether another player collected them.
- The Recovery Compass points somewhere unexpected
- It targets your most recent death, not necessarily the death containing your best gear, and it does not guide normally across dimensions.
The practical answer
For guaranteed convenience in a private compatible world, use /gamerule keepInventory true. For the standard Survival experience, accept the death penalty but reduce the risk: store valuables in an Ender Chest, mark coordinates, set a safe spawn point, carry emergency supplies, use Totems for dangerous trips, and return quickly after a death. If the drops reached lava, the void, a loaded area after despawning, or a Curse of Vanishing affected them, recovery may no longer be possible.
