Check access and syntax before acting
Use an administrator account or server console
Commands can be entered in-game only when the account has administrator privileges. The current administrator references also identify controlserver as a common privilege for server-management actions. If your account cannot execute a command, use the server’s console or ask an existing administrator to grant the appropriate privilege.
A hosting control panel normally provides a console separate from the game client. The same command syntax is generally entered there without relying on an in-game character being online, but the panel’s command field may handle a leading slash differently. Follow the panel’s own prompt: if it rejects a command beginning with /, submit the same command without that slash.

Ask the running server for its command handbook
The Vintage Story community command page notes that its instructions were last verified for version 1.15. That makes it useful background, not a guarantee for a newer server. Before copying a duration format or privilege name, run these commands on your own server:
/help ban/help kick/help unban/help privileges
The administrator reference describes the running server as the final authority. Loaded mods can add, remove, or alter commands, so an error in the live handbook takes precedence over an example written for an earlier release.

Kick a player without imposing a ban
Run the kick command
- Connect with an administrator account, or open the server console.
- Identify the player name exactly as the server displays it.
- Run
/kick <playername>. For example:/kick Steve. - Optionally add a short reason:
/kick Steve Please rejoin after reading the rules. - Watch for the server’s confirmation or error message.
The optional reason is shown to the disconnected player when supplied, according to the current hosting procedure. Keep it factual and brief; a kick is a one-session intervention, not a permanent record of misconduct.

When a kick is the right response
A kick removes the player from the current session but does not itself prevent a later connection. It fits situations such as a temporary disruption, a connection that must be reset, or a first incident where you want to stop the immediate behavior without imposing a longer restriction.
If the player reconnects and repeats the conduct, record what happened and choose a ban only if your server rules make that escalation appropriate. The command does not decide policy for you; it only disconnects the named account.
Ban a player from joining
Apply a restriction
- Confirm that you intend to block future joins, rather than only end the current session.
- Run
/help banand read the syntax printed by your server. - Enter the player name exactly as recognized by the server.
- For a restriction with no stated expiry, use the permanent form shown by your server, commonly
/ban <playername>. - Include a reason when your server’s syntax accepts one, so another administrator can understand the decision later.
- Check the result with
/list banned.
A ban blocks the player from joining until an administrator removes it or a supported timed ban expires. It is therefore more severe than a kick and should match the rules you published for the server.

Use a temporary ban when the version supports timespans
A March 1, 2026 server procedure documents this pattern: /Ban [Player Name] [Timespan (hour|day|week|year)] [Reason]. In that procedure, /ban Steve 1 year Uninvited applies a one-year restriction with the reason “Uninvited.” Use the capitalization and ordering printed by your own /help ban output if they differ.

The documented duration units are hour, day, week, and year. That list is not a promise that every Vintage Story release or modded server supports all four. If the command rejects a duration, do not guess another unit; consult the live handbook and use only the forms it lists.
A timed ban is useful when your rules specify a cooling-off period or a first-offense penalty. It still prevents joining for the stated period, so verify the player name and duration before submitting it.
Review bans and unban a player
Inspect the current list
Run /list banned from the game or console. Use the output to confirm that the intended name is present and to distinguish an active ban from a failed command or a name mismatch. The list is also the practical record administrators can consult when reviewing an appeal.
Remove a ban
- Run
/list bannedand copy the player name as the server records it. - Execute
/unban <playername>; for example,/unban Steve. - Run
/list bannedagain to verify that the entry is gone. - Tell the player to try joining again only after the list confirms the removal.
/unban removes the restriction; it does not automatically reconnect someone who was kicked or banned. If the player is still online through an existing session, use /kick separately only when your rules require it.

Kick or ban? A decision guide

Choose based on your written rules, the seriousness of the incident, and whether a temporary removal is enough. Do not use a permanent ban merely because a kick is inconvenient to repeat; conversely, do not keep kicking a player when your policy requires a documented restriction.
In-game command versus server console
In-game administration
In-game commands are convenient when you are present and have the required privilege. They also let you see the immediate feedback in the same chat window. If the command fails, copy the exact error and compare it with /help rather than repeatedly changing the syntax at random.
Console administration
The console is preferable when the affected player is disrupting chat, when no administrator can safely remain in the world, or when you need to manage the server before joining. It also provides a useful recovery path if a modded client displays a misleading command error. Console prompts differ between hosts, so follow the prompt’s slash convention and verify the result with /list banned.

“You do not have permission”
- Confirm that you are logged into the intended administrator account.
- Run
/help privilegesand check which privilege controls server commands on this installation. - If you manage the server through a panel, use its console or ask the owner to grant the required privilege.
Do not grant broad administrator access just to solve one incident. Give the smallest server-control permission that matches your staffing and trust model.

“Unknown command” or a rejected argument
- Run the matching help command:
/help kick,/help ban, or/help unban. - Check whether a loaded mod replaced the vanilla command or changed its arguments.
- Try the command from the server console if the in-game parser is adding chat-specific formatting.
Because command availability is version- and mod-dependent, an example that worked on version 1.15 may not be valid on your installation.
The player cannot be found
- Use the exact name shown in the server’s player list or in the command’s error message.
- Check spelling, capitalization, and any characters the server treats as part of the name.
- If the player is offline, use the name stored in an existing ban-list entry or administrator record rather than a nickname.
If the server still cannot resolve the name, stop before applying a restriction to a similarly named account.
A timed ban does not work
Read /help ban again and match its unit names, order, and reason placement exactly. The hour/day/week/year form documented on March 1, 2026 is not guaranteed on every release. If your server lists no duration syntax, use only the permanent or other form it explicitly supports.
The player can still join after a ban
- Run
/list bannedand verify that the intended account appears. - Check whether the ban expired because a timespan was supplied.
- Confirm that the player is using the same account name you banned.
- Review loaded mods and their documentation for commands that replace or bypass the default ban system.
- If the list is correct but access continues, use the server console and consult the administrator reference for that exact build.
Administrator checklist
- Publish server rules that explain when a kick, temporary ban, and permanent ban are used.
- Keep at least one administrator able to reach the console independently of the game client.
- Before acting, confirm the exact player name and the intended duration.
- Use a concise, factual reason when the command accepts one.
- After every ban or unban, verify the state with
/list banned. - Recheck live
/helpoutput after a game update or mod change. - Record the decision in your private staff log if your community needs an appeal trail; the command itself should not be treated as a complete incident report.
What to remember
Kick when you need to end a player’s current session and allow a later return. Ban when server policy requires blocking future joins, using the timed syntax your installation actually supports. Unban with /unban, verify with /list banned, and trust the running server’s own command handbook over an older wiki page or an example copied from another modded setup.
