Will-o-the-Wisps in Oblivion Remastered are reported to resist ordinary weapons and poison. Use magic or a silver, Daedric, or enchanted weapon; a silver bow lets you attack from range. If you can cast it, Reflect Spell is a useful defense against their reported health and magicka absorption.
What damages a Will-o-the-Wisp?
PC Gamer’s guide to the encounter says ordinary weapon attacks and poison do not hurt wisps. It recommends magic or a silver, Daedric, or enchanted weapon. The guide says the encounter works the same in the remaster as in the original, but these are guide-backed tactics rather than verified Remastered enemy statistics. - Magic: A practical option if your character can cast spells, though close-range magicka absorption may put pressure on your reserves.
- Silver bow: Lets you attack from a distance and is a useful choice for a character built around melee combat.
- Silver, Daedric, or enchanted melee weapon: Use one if you need to fight at close range or do not have a suitable ranged option.
The guide does not provide controlled damage comparisons, so there is no established universally strongest weapon or spell. Choose an effective attack that suits your build and available equipment.
How to reduce the danger from absorption
Wisps can absorb health and magicka when they get close. PC Gamer recommends Reflect Spell as a defensive counter to that attack. The original Oblivion PC manual describes Absorb effects as transferring an effect and Weakness effects as reducing resistance. That terminology offers general context, but the manual is for the original game and does not establish the remastered wisp’s exact behavior or stats.

What if your character is unarmed?
According to PC Gamer, fists can damage a Will-o-the-Wisp once Hand-to-Hand reaches Journeyman, level 50 or above. If you are below that threshold, switch to magic or a qualifying weapon rather than relying on unarmed attacks.
Where can you encounter wisps?
PC Gamer names the area near Azura’s Shrine after you start Blood of the Daedra, and the area outside Swampy Cave after you start Mystery at Harlun’s Watch. The guide also notes that wisps may appear in monster dungeons. If you do not have a way to damage one, avoiding the encounter is safer than spending resources on attacks reported to be ineffective.
Bethesda says enemies in Oblivion Remastered scale with player level and advises developing a mix of combat, magic, and stealth skills. Its support guidance does not specify a wisp-level range or scaling formula, so it cannot predict how difficult a particular wisp will be for your character. The PC Gamer guide says defeated wisps can be looted for glow dust, an alchemy ingredient that is also needed as an offering for Azura’s Shrine. The guide does not establish that every wisp is guaranteed to drop it.
