The reliable pattern is simple: give each approved file a stable URL, map that URL to an allowlisted file, and return download headers from the server. For a public game patch, PDF guide, ZIP archive, or installer, a URL such as /downloads/report.pdf can be served directly by Apache or NGINX. For private or per-user files, route the request through an application that authenticates the visitor, authorizes the specific file, then streams it with Content-Disposition: attachment.

Choose the delivery model before writing code
Your choice depends on whether the file is public and fixed or controlled by an account, purchase, expiry date, or per-file permission. Do not add an application endpoint merely to rename a public ZIP; do not expose a private save file under a guessable public path.

For a public video-game site, a dedicated static directory is normally the least fragile option. Use an application route when a player must only retrieve their own save, a moderator must revoke a file, or a download should expire. The remainder of this guide shows both paths.
Public static downloads: the safest simple setup
1. Create a dedicated download directory
Put only files you have deliberately made public under a directory such as downloads. Keep private configuration, uploaded originals, database dumps, server backups, and user home directories outside the web document tree. A URL beneath the site’s document root is normally mapped to a file beneath that root, so placing a secret file there can make it reachable without any application check.

Use predictable, versioned names for public game assets, for example arena-patch-1.4.2.zip or controller-layout.pdf. Avoid names that contain spaces or characters requiring extensive URL encoding. A stable path lets you change the page that links to a file without changing the file’s address.

A client-side download attribute can influence same-origin links, but it is only a hint: browser rules and the server’s filename parameter can take precedence. Set the server header when download behavior matters.
3. Check the resulting response
Request the URL in a browser and inspect the network response or use a command-line HTTP client. A successful forced download should look like this:

X-Content-Type-Options: nosniffContent-Disposition: attachment tells the browser to download instead of render inline. The filename value suggests the local name. Quote names containing spaces or special characters. Keep the type accurate: use application/pdf for a PDF, an archive type when you know the format, and application/octet-stream for an unknown or generic binary file.
Apache: map and force a download location
Apache maps URL paths below its DocumentRoot to files in the corresponding filesystem directory. If /downloads/report.pdf exists beneath that root, Apache can serve it without PHP or another application. This is appropriate for public assets.

Serve a directory as attachments
In a virtual-host configuration or an allowed directory configuration, set headers for the download location. The exact configuration-file path and whether overrides are permitted depend on your hosting setup. A typical Apache configuration is:

</Directory>The Header directive requires Apache’s headers module. If you cannot change the virtual-host configuration, the same directives may be placed in an allowed .htaccess file, but shared hosting can disable them. Test after every configuration change and reload Apache using the service procedure provided by your operating system.
Setting a directory-wide attachment header is convenient, but it applies to every file in that location. Do not put HTML pages that should render, or files that need a different disposition, in the same directory. A more selective rule can target extensions, but maintain an explicit list so a newly uploaded file does not acquire an unintended behavior.
Make MIME handling deliberate
Apache’s MIME mapping normally derives the type from the extension. Verify that PDF, ZIP, and other game-asset extensions map to the types you expect. If the type is unknown, return application/octet-stream rather than a misleading text or HTML type. The attachment header prevents ordinary rendering, while X-Content-Type-Options: nosniff tells compatible browsers not to reinterpret the bytes as another type.

Prevent directory browsing and accidental files
Disable indexes with Options -Indexes (or the equivalent virtual-host setting). A disabled index does not make files private; anyone who knows a filename can still request it. For private material, move it outside DocumentRoot and use an authorization endpoint instead of trying to hide it with an obscure name.
NGINX: use root, alias, and try_files correctly
NGINX’s root directive appends the request URI to a filesystem root. With root /srv/site;, a request for /downloads/report.pdf resolves to /srv/site/downloads/report.pdf. An alias replaces the matching location prefix, which is useful when the URL directory and filesystem directory have different names.

Public files under the site root

}try_files checks that the requested file exists before continuing or returning an error. Returning 404 for a missing path avoids routing a mistyped filename into an unrelated application page. Ensure your NGINX build and configuration permit the headers you use; a location-level header can also replace inherited headers, so inspect the final response rather than assuming inheritance.
Map a URL prefix to a separate directory

}With alias, pay close attention to trailing slashes and path construction. A configuration error can point requests at the wrong directory or make every request fail. Restrict the directory to files intended for public access; an alias does not add authorization by itself.

default_type application/octet-stream is useful when every response in a location should be treated as generic binary data. Prefer explicit MIME types when you know the format, especially if clients rely on them for validation or display. Reload NGINX only after validating the configuration, then request a known file, a missing file, and a path containing encoded traversal characters.
Force PDFs, SVGs, HTML, and other risky formats to download
Some formats are safe to display as documents, while others can execute or be interpreted in a browser context. If visitors are downloading user-provided HTML, SVG, or another format that should never run as part of your site, send Content-Disposition: attachment and X-Content-Type-Options: nosniff. This reduces the chance that a browser renders attacker-controlled content under your origin.
Do not rely on the file extension alone. A file named guide.pdf can contain unexpected bytes, and a user-uploaded file can be renamed after validation. Validate the content and assign a conservative type at upload time, then send the same decision when downloading. If a file must be viewable inline, isolate it on a separate origin or otherwise apply a policy appropriate to your threat model rather than weakening every download.
Build a PHP download endpoint for controlled access
An application endpoint is the right choice when the server must check an account, ownership, purchase, expiry, role, or one-time token. The endpoint should receive an opaque file ID, look that ID up in a database or server-side map, authorize the current user, and only then open the resolved path.

Resolve an ID, never an unchecked filename
Do not concatenate a query-string value such as ?file=../../private/save.dat into a filesystem path. Even URL decoding, string replacement, or checking for the substring .. is not a complete defense. Resolve an ID to a record whose path is controlled by the server, canonicalize the path, and verify that it remains inside the permitted download directory.

?>The helper functions in this example represent your own database and authorization code; they are not optional security steps. Keep the original path and the suggested download name as separate fields. Sanitize the name for a response header, and do not let a record supply an unbounded header value. Send no HTML or debug output before the headers.
Choose 403 and 404 responses deliberately
Use 403 when the request is understood but the caller is not allowed to retrieve that resource. Use 404 for a missing record or file. In especially sensitive systems, you may return the same outward response for “not found” and “not allowed” to avoid revealing whether another user’s file exists; make that a documented policy and keep detailed reasons in server logs.
Stream rather than load large files into memory
PHP’s readfile() sends the file from the endpoint, but your framework and web-server integration determine buffering, timeouts, and whether the entire response is held in memory. Do not call a function that reads a multi-gigabyte game build into a string. For large public files, let Apache or NGINX serve the bytes directly. For protected files, use your platform’s web-server handoff or streaming mechanism when available, and document range-request and caching behavior because those details vary by stack.
Protect a complete download area with server authentication
If every file in a location is intended for the same small audience, server-level authentication can be simpler than writing an account-aware endpoint. NGINX Basic Authentication can protect an entire site or selected locations and can be combined with IP or geographic restrictions. Use TLS so credentials and file contents are not sent in clear text.
Location-wide authentication is not a substitute for per-file authorization. It cannot by itself determine whether player A owns save 123, whether a purchase has expired, or whether a moderator revoked one archive. Those decisions belong in the application. Also remember that a protected static URL may still be copied by an authenticated user; authorization controls access, not redistribution.

Security checklist for downloadable files
- Separate public and private storage. Keep private files outside the public document tree whenever possible.
- Allowlist resources. Accept an internal ID or a server-generated token, then map it to a known record and permitted extension.
- Canonicalize paths. Resolve symbolic links and relative segments, and verify the final path stays inside the intended directory.
- Set safe headers. Use an accurate
Content-Type,Content-Disposition: attachmentwhen rendering is unwanted, andX-Content-Type-Options: nosniff. - Do not expose listings. Disable directory indexes and never treat an unguessable filename as authorization.
- Control names. Quote filenames with spaces, strip line breaks and header characters, and use a conservative fallback name.
- Limit upload risk. Validate size and content at upload, store generated names, and do not execute uploaded files from the web process.
- Log decisions. Record the user, file ID, timestamp, outcome, and reason without putting secrets or tokens in logs.
- Return appropriate errors. Use 404 for missing resources and 403 for denied requests, without disclosing unrelated private paths.
- Test authorization repeatedly. Try an expired token, another user’s ID, a deleted file, a path traversal attempt, and a request without a session.
Testing procedure before publishing a link
- Request a known file and confirm a
200response, the expected byte length, and the intended MIME type. - Confirm the browser saves the file with the requested name instead of opening it inline.
- Request a nonexistent filename and verify a clean
404, not a directory listing or a generic HTML page returned with status 200. - For a protected endpoint, test an anonymous request, an authorized request, and an authenticated user who lacks permission.
- Try encoded
../segments, alternate slashes, null-byte-like input, and a symlink that points outside the download directory. - Download a large archive and watch memory, CPU, connection time, and resume behavior on the application and web server.
- Open the saved file independently and verify its checksum or signature if players need assurance that a patch was not corrupted.
- Review access logs to ensure query tokens, session identifiers, and private filesystem paths are not being recorded unnecessarily.
Troubleshooting common failures
The PDF opens in the browser
Check the actual response for Content-Disposition: attachment. A client-side download attribute is not authoritative, especially across origins or when the server supplies a filename. Confirm that another proxy, framework, or location rule has not replaced the header.
The download is reported as an HTML file
Inspect Content-Type and the response body. A missing file may be falling through to an application’s HTML error page, or the server may lack a MIME mapping. Add try_files ... =404 in NGINX or an equivalent Apache rule, then set the correct type for the extension.

Check filesystem permissions for the web-server account, parent-directory traversal permissions, and authentication rules. In an application endpoint, log whether the failure occurred during lookup, authorization, canonical-path validation, or file opening. Do not “fix” the problem by making the entire private directory world-readable.
A valid file returns 404
With NGINX, verify whether you used root when you needed alias, and check trailing slashes. With Apache, confirm the URL is beneath the active DocumentRoot and that rewrite rules are not intercepting it. In PHP, compare the canonical path with the permitted base directory and account for symbolic links.
Large downloads stop partway through
Look for application timeouts, reverse-proxy limits, buffering, and connection resets. Prefer direct static serving for public assets. For protected files, use a streaming or web-server handoff supported by your stack, and verify whether byte-range requests are preserved if users need pause-and-resume behavior.
Examples for a video-game download page
A public patch page can link directly to /downloads/skyforge-2.1.0-patch.zip and set the entire directory to attachment mode. A manual can use /downloads/controls.pdf with an explicit PDF type and the same nosniff header. A player’s cloud save should instead use a route such as /account/download?id=4817; the server looks up save 4817, confirms that the signed-in account owns it, and streams a generated filename such as player-save-2026-10-15.dat.

Use a dedicated public directory plus a normal anchor for files everyone may download. Add server-side attachment and nosniff headers when formats should not render. Use an application endpoint for anything tied to an account, purchase, expiry, or audit requirement; resolve an allowlisted ID, authorize first, canonicalize the path, and stream the file without exposing private storage. This separation keeps simple downloads fast while giving protected game files the checks they actually need.
