The practical route is to kill drowned that spawn holding one, then improve your odds with repeated encounters or a drowned farm. Once you have a trident, it works as both a close-range weapon and a charged projectile. Loyalty, Riptide, Impaling, Channeling, Unbreaking and Mending each suit a different job, so the best enchantment depends on whether you want reliable ranged combat, movement, aquatic damage or thunderstorm utility.

Edition and version matter when you estimate the drop rate. Mojang’s Bedrock guidance gives an approximate one-trident-per-188-drowned figure, while another 2025 reference reports separate Java and Bedrock drop percentages for drowned that are already carrying tridents. Treat those figures as edition-specific estimates rather than one universal probability.

How tridents are obtained
A trident is a rare weapon obtained from drowned. It is not a survival-craftable item: no crafting-table recipe turns common materials into one. Duncan Geere, writing for Minecraft, summarizes the acquisition route plainly: “There’s only one way to get one — defeating a drowned.” Your objective is therefore to create as many valid drowned encounters as possible and kill the ones that appear with tridents.
Find drowned in oceans and rivers
Drowned spawn in ocean and river environments. Explore those biomes at a difficulty and time of day that allow hostile mobs to appear, and look for the underwater zombie variant rather than ordinary zombies. A drowned holding a trident is visually distinct because the weapon is in its hand. Not every drowned carries one, so finding a group is an opportunity for several attempts, not a guarantee.

Kill the carrier
Defeat the trident-bearing drowned with the weapon that is safest for your equipment and surroundings. Fighting underwater slows ordinary movement and makes visibility important, so clear nearby threats before committing to a prolonged exchange. A shield, armor and a way to breathe underwater reduce the risk of losing the gear you are trying to obtain.
The trident a drowned throws is not automatically recoverable. Mojang’s guide distinguishes a drowned-thrown trident from a trident thrown by the player. In practical terms, do not assume that you can simply pick up every projectile that lands near you; the reliable goal is to make the drowned drop the item when it is defeated.

Use Looting when you have it
A sword with Looting can improve the number of useful drops you obtain while killing mobs. The exact incremental effect is version-dependent, so it is not responsible to promise a fixed number of kills or a guaranteed time to your first trident. Looting improves an attempt; it does not remove the underlying rarity.
How rare is a trident in Java and Bedrock?
There is no single probability that applies to every edition and version. Two commonly cited figures describe different parts of the process and should not be blended into one headline rate.

The first figure and the latter two are not directly interchangeable: one is expressed per drowned encountered, while the other is expressed for a drowned that already has a trident. Spawn rules, edition, game version and the definition of “drop chance” all affect the result. Use the edition label and the version you are actually playing when planning a hunt, and regard any estimate as a long-run average rather than a schedule.

A repeatable option: build a drowned farm
Manual hunting is useful for a first attempt, but a farm increases the number of drowned you can process without constantly searching new waterways. The Minecraft Wiki documents aerial drowned farms that work in both Java and Bedrock. Their shared idea is to provide a controlled spawning area, move naturally spawned drowned to a collection point and let the player kill them efficiently.

Farm layout
The cited design uses four functional sections:
- An aerial spawning platform: a raised area where naturally spawned drowned can appear under the farm’s conditions.
- Flowing water: water channels move the drowned away from the spawning area instead of leaving them scattered across the platform.
- A drop shaft: the flow sends mobs into a vertical route that concentrates them below.
- A player-kill area: the collection point lets you finish the drowned yourself, which is important when you are trying to obtain their drops.
The exact block dimensions, height and spawn-proofing details depend on the farm design and the edition’s current spawning behavior. Follow a design tested for your edition rather than copying a Java layout into Bedrock unchanged. The documented concept is cross-edition, but the implementation is not necessarily identical in every release.
Operating the farm
- Choose a safe location. Build above a body of water or another area where the farm’s collection point can be isolated from unrelated hostile mobs.
- Construct the elevated spawning area. Make the platform’s surfaces and lighting match the design you are following so natural drowned spawning can occur.
- Install the water channels. Arrange the flow so drowned are carried toward the opening rather than stranded on dry sections.
- Build the shaft and collection room. Keep the drop route enclosed and place the player-kill area where you can reach the mobs without exposing yourself to other spawn locations.
- Kill the collected drowned. A Looting sword is useful if available, but no enchantment guarantees a trident.
- Clear interruptions. If the stream stops, mobs jam at a corner or other hostile mobs fill the spawning cap, correct that problem before judging the farm’s output.
What a farm can and cannot do
A farm creates more attempts; it does not change the underlying edition-specific drop rules. A long period without a trident is possible even when the build is working. Conversely, an early drop does not establish a repeatable average. Treat the farm as an automation and convenience tool, not as proof that a particular design has a guaranteed yield.
Using a trident in combat
Melee attacks
At close range, swing the trident in the same basic way you would swing a sword. This is useful when an enemy is within reach or when throwing would make the weapon difficult to retrieve. Mojang describes the weapon as suitable for both ordinary attacks and underwater use; Minecraft developer Jens Bergensten has called it “a weapon that is intended to be used underwater.”
Charged throws
For a ranged attack, hold the use button to charge the trident, then release to throw it. The charge-and-release behavior is the core ranged control on supported platforms: a quick press is not the same as pulling the weapon back and launching it. Aim with the same care you would use for any projectile, especially when fighting above deep water or near lava where retrieval may be difficult.

Retrieving your own throw
Mojang’s player guidance says that, once obtained, you can swing the trident like a sword or press and hold the use button to pull it back. After a player throw lands, retrieval depends on the situation and the enchantments on the weapon. A non-returning throw may leave the trident at its impact location, so check the ground, walls or water where it landed before moving away. Loyalty changes that routine by bringing the weapon back after a short delay.
Choosing trident enchantments
There is no single best build for every world. Decide first whether the trident is primarily a ranged weapon, a movement tool, an aquatic-mob weapon or a thunderstorm device. Then add durability enchantments if you intend to keep it as a long-term part of your equipment.

Best general-purpose build
For a trident that you carry during ordinary exploration, Loyalty is usually the most convenient first choice because it removes the need to walk back to every impact point. Add Unbreaking and Mending when the weapon is valuable enough to justify long-term maintenance. This setup favors dependable ranged use rather than specialized movement or weather effects.
Best mobility build
Choose Riptide when the trident’s main job is moving you through water or rain. It is particularly useful for crossing oceans and for exploiting wet conditions during travel. Because the enchantment propels the player instead of behaving like a conventional returning projectile, it represents a different role from a Loyalty weapon.
Best aquatic-combat build
Impaling is the targeted choice when most of your fights involve aquatic mobs or wet-condition targets recognized by your edition. Pair it with durability support if the trident is used frequently. Before relying on a damage increase, check the current rules for your edition: the applicable targets and wet conditions are not safe to generalize across every version.

Best thunderstorm build
Channeling is a specialist option. During a thunderstorm, throw the trident so it strikes a mob and can trigger the lightning interaction. Without the required weather and a valid mob hit, Channeling offers no ordinary ranged advantage, so it is better treated as a situational tool than as the default enchantment.
Durability, storage and safe use
A trident is difficult to replace, so treat the first one as valuable equipment even before enchanting it. Use melee attacks when a throw would place the weapon somewhere inaccessible, and avoid launching it into locations where you cannot safely reach the impact point. Store it in a dedicated inventory slot or chest when you are testing an unfamiliar farm, cave or ocean route.
Unbreaking and Mending address different maintenance concerns: Unbreaking slows durability loss, while Mending supports continued use under its normal repair conditions. Neither changes the trident’s acquisition rarity. If you are still trying to obtain your first weapon, keep your hunting sword and armor separate from the trident-farming workflow so an accidental death does not erase all of your progress.

“I have killed many drowned and none dropped a trident.”
That result is compatible with a rare, variable drop. Confirm that you are killing drowned that actually carry tridents, then increase the number of attempts. Looting can improve drops, but no fixed kill count is guaranteed, and the published rates differ by edition and by denominator.
“The trident I saw thrown is gone.”
A drowned-thrown trident is not automatically recoverable. Do not use the behavior of your own Loyalty or non-Loyalty throws as proof that an enemy projectile can be picked up. Focus on defeating the carrier for a drop.

“My farm produces drowned but no tridents.”
Check that the killing area is being used by a player, that the water channels move mobs all the way to the collection point and that unrelated hostile mobs are not consuming the available spawning capacity. A functioning farm still follows the same rare drop rules as natural hunting, so production of drowned is evidence of attempts, not evidence of a guaranteed trident.

“Riptide is not behaving like Loyalty.”
That is expected. Riptide launches the player through water or rain; Loyalty returns a thrown trident. They solve different problems and should be selected according to whether you want movement or projectile retrieval.
“Channeling does nothing.”
Channeling requires a thunderstorm and a thrown trident that hits a mob. Test it only when both conditions are present. A clear-weather throw or a miss will not demonstrate the lightning interaction.
A practical progression from first hunt to permanent weapon
- Prepare for water combat. Bring armor, food and a safe way to manage underwater encounters before searching rivers or oceans.
- Make the first attempts manually. Identify drowned carrying tridents and defeat them rather than chasing every projectile they throw.
- Add Looting if available. Use it to improve the value of repeated kills, while keeping expectations tied to the edition and version.
- Build a repeatable farm if searching becomes inefficient. Use the documented aerial-platform, flowing-water, drop-shaft and player-kill approach, adapting the construction to your edition.
- Select an enchantment around your actual use. Loyalty suits general ranged play, Riptide suits wet movement, Impaling suits applicable aquatic combat and Channeling suits thunderstorm interactions.
- Protect the investment. Add Unbreaking and Mending when durability and long-term maintenance matter, and avoid risky throws that place the weapon beyond safe reach.
What to remember
The acquisition problem and the usage problem are separate. Obtaining a trident is a matter of finding and defeating the right drowned often enough; using one well is a matter of matching its enchantments to your environment. Java and Bedrock should be planned separately, farm designs should be edition-aware, and published probabilities should always retain their edition, date and denominator. Once those qualifications are clear, a drowned farm plus a purpose-built enchantment setup gives you a reliable way to turn a rare drop into a useful weapon.
