In Fortress Saga, leveling and promotion are separate upgrades: leveling raises a hero’s stats with progression materials, while promotion consumes copies of that same hero and Amplification Crystals. Build around the heroes your team and current progression need, and check the live promotion screen before spending scarce materials because published costs may change with game updates.
Leveling and promotion: what each upgrade does
Hero leveling uses progression materials to raise stats. Promotion is a separate upgrade that requires duplicate copies of the hero and Amplification Crystals. Promotion also raises the hero’s level cap and can unlock passive skills and potential, according to a guide updated September 3, 2026 (Kamigame攻略).
Heroes can also contribute through the collection effect when owned, even if they are not deployed. That makes a newly acquired hero useful to account progression without requiring you to immediately divert your main team’s resources to it (Kamigame攻略).
How to promote a hero
- From the home screen, tap Heroes in the lower-left corner.
- Select the hero you want to promote.
- Choose the materials to consume, checking the displayed requirements carefully.
- Choose the promotion or level-up control shown on the hero screen to complete the upgrade.
Promotion consumes same-hero copies as well as Amplification Crystals. Confirm the selected materials and the resulting promotion step in the panel before committing them.

What materials do you need to promote heroes?
The table below reproduces the star-stage requirements published by Kamigame攻略 on May 18, 2026. These are dated reference values, not a guarantee of the current cost in every game version or localization; verify the hero’s live promotion panel before spending.

Where to get hero leveling materials
The cited character-promotion guide identifies two sources of materials used for hero leveling:
- Dangerous Bakery dungeon.
- Kitchen facility.
Keep these sources progressing as part of your account routine rather than relying on promotion alone. Leveling and promotion improve different parts of a hero’s progression, and promotion’s expanded level cap is most useful when you can continue leveling afterward.

How to get duplicate heroes and Amplification Crystals
Target summons toward the hero you need
Summons are a route to duplicate copies. Featured or selection summons can help focus attempts on a particular hero when those banners are available, but they do not guarantee that you will obtain the duplicate you need (Kamigame攻略, updated August 5, 2026).
Check the hero shop for eligible options
Legendary Hero Coins can be used in the hero shop for summon tickets or eligible owned Legendary heroes. Some heroes cannot be exchanged until you have acquired them at least once, so check the shop’s eligibility and current stock before planning around a specific copy (Kamigame攻略).
How to choose investments efficiently
There is no universally correct hero to promote: the best use of a scarce copy depends on what your roster needs and what you can afford to finish. Compare these factors before committing:

Does leveling or promotion require spending money?
The cited progression sources describe in-game material and duplicate routes; they do not establish that spending money is necessary to level or promote heroes. The official store sells in-game currency (Fortress Saga Web Store), while the game’s Google Play listing describes it as an idle RPG with automatic leveling and offline rewards (Google Play). Those store descriptions do not replace the specific promotion and leveling requirements shown in the game.
