Blizzard’s announced policy is that existing heroes are unlocked for players and new heroes are available immediately when they launch, starting with Season 10. New players must first complete the first-time user experience. You can try heroes in the Practice Range before unlocking them for regular play, then build skills there or use a Hero Mastery course if one is currently available for your chosen hero.
How hero unlocks work
Blizzard announced that, beginning with Season 10, all existing heroes would be unlocked for players and new heroes would be available immediately at launch. New players are an exception: they must complete the first-time user experience. Blizzard says that after unlocking heroes from the original Overwatch roster, Overwatch 2 heroes become available. Read the Season 10 developer update for the announced policy, and follow any account-specific prompts shown in your current game client.

Older guides may give different instructions because the system changed. Blizzard’s Season 2 catch-up article described selecting a hero challenge, practicing abilities in the Practice Range, then completing match-win challenges; it also mentioned a shop option. That is historical guidance, not the default unlock process established by the later Season 10 announcement. Blizzard’s 2022 explainer also covered the Battle Pass-era system, in which new heroes appeared in the free track and past heroes could return through challenges or the shop.
How to try a hero in the Practice Range
Blizzard says heroes can be played automatically in the Practice Range before they are unlocked for regular play. The range is an open-ended place to explore a hero’s weapons and abilities without committing to a live match. Blizzard’s Invasion update describes practice bots and a firing range with selectable targets, adjustable target distance, and adjustable target movement.

Blizzard describes Hero Mastery as an “always-available, single-player mode for honing a hero’s skills and abilities.” Its hero-specific courses reward speed, defeating training bots, and collecting emblems. The course roster is selected rather than universal, so check the current Hero Mastery menu to see whether your hero has a course. Details are in Blizzard’s Hero Mastery announcement.

A simple practice sequence
- Open the Practice Range and select the hero you want to learn. Blizzard says all heroes can be tried there automatically.
- Test primary fire and abilities against bots or targets, changing target distance and movement to vary the drill.
- If a Hero Mastery course is available for that hero, play it to work through its designed challenges and track your course performance.
- When you feel comfortable, move into a live mode that suits your goals. This is general gameplay advice, not an unlock requirement.
