Link your Nintendo Network ID (NNID) from the Nintendo Account website: sign in to the account you want to use, open the linked-apps settings, and follow the prompts. Your NNID’s date of birth and country must match the Nintendo Account’s, and an NNID can be linked to only one Nintendo Account at a time.
Link your NNID from the Nintendo Account website
- Sign in to the Nintendo Account website using the Nintendo Account you want associated with the NNID.
- Open User information, then Linked apps and services.
- In the Linked accounts area, select Edit.
- Select the checkbox for Nintendo Network ID and follow the prompts to enter your NNID and password. Nintendo’s linking instructions provide the online steps.
Menu labels vary by region. Nintendo UK uses Your Info and Change for the comparable settings. If you cannot remember the NNID or password, use the recovery links shown on screen. Nintendo UK’s instructions show its labels.
Check these requirements before troubleshooting
- The date of birth on the NNID must match the Nintendo Account’s date of birth.
- The NNID country of residence must match the Nintendo Account country setting.
- The NNID must allow use from devices other than the legacy Nintendo console. On Wii U, check Usage from PCs and Other Devices; on Nintendo 3DS family systems, check Non-Nintendo Device Setting. Nintendo says an NNID with off-device usage restricted cannot be linked.
Nintendo’s linking-error guidance covers these requirements.
Fix common linking errors
The NNID is already linked
An NNID can be linked to only one Nintendo Account at a time. Sign in to the Nintendo Account that currently has the link and unlink it there before linking the NNID to another account. If you are unsure which Nintendo Account holds it, try the accounts you may have used and use Nintendo’s account recovery options.

The Nintendo Account was created with this NNID
If the Nintendo Account itself was created using that NNID, Nintendo says you may need to add another sign-in service—another NNID, Google, or Apple—or set a Nintendo Account password before you can unlink it. See Nintendo’s instructions for changing the linked NNID.
The details match, but linking still fails
Check the off-device-use setting on the Wii U or Nintendo 3DS family system associated with the NNID. If the matching date of birth, country, and device-use setting do not resolve the error, Nintendo directs users to contact support through its troubleshooting page.

Do not expect the link to merge balances. Nintendo Support states: “As of March 11, 2024, it is no longer possible to combine the Nintendo eShop fund balance between a Nintendo Network ID and a Nintendo Account.” Nintendo’s support article gives that policy date.
