Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →On a new Nintendo Switch or Switch 2, create or select a user profile, then open System Settings > Users and choose Sign in to a Nintendo Account or Link Nintendo Account. Sign in with the Nintendo Account you already use. You can link that account on more than one console, so you do not need to unlink it from the old one first. Linking does not automatically move local save data.
Link the account on the new console
- Connect the console to the internet and open System Settings.
- Select Users, then choose an existing user profile or create a new one.
- Open the selected user’s profile settings and choose Sign in to a Nintendo Account or Link Nintendo Account. The wording can differ by system generation and setup state.
- Enter the credentials for your existing Nintendo Account and complete the on-screen confirmation.
If you cannot remember the sign-in details, use Nintendo Account recovery rather than creating a new account. Purchases belong to the original account. A linked account enables features including eShop access and online game modes. Switch and Switch 2 support up to eight user profiles per system.

Choose the right way to move data
Linking an account is different from transferring a user, an individual save, or an entire console. Choose the procedure based on whether the old system is available, whether the new system is a Switch or Switch 2, and what data you want to move.
| What you want to do | Procedure | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Use the account on another console | Link it to a user profile | Does not by itself move local saves. |
| Move one Switch user and associated data to another Switch | System Settings > Users > Transfer Your User Data | The selected user’s profile and associated saves and purchases move off the source console. |
| Move an individual save and keep both consoles | System Settings > Data Management > Transfer Your Save Data | The save is removed from the source when transfer completes. |
| Move from Switch to Switch 2 | Use the dedicated Switch 2 system-transfer flow | When both consoles are available, use local communication; the flow can include all users. |
| Recover eligible saves without the old console | Download supported Save Data Cloud backups | Requires an active Nintendo Switch Online membership and a save that was backed up. |
Move one user from Switch to Switch
On both consoles, open System Settings > Users > Transfer Your User Data. Choose Source Console on the old system and Target Console on the new one, then follow the prompts.

- The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
- One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
- Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
- Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
- GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play
- Both systems need system menu version 4.0.0 or later, internet access, and proximity for local communication.
- The Nintendo Account must be linked to the source user and must not already be linked to a user on the target system for this transfer.
- The target needs an open user slot and enough internal storage.
The user’s profile, associated save data, and purchases move to the target and are no longer available on the source. Shared game save data, including Animal Crossing: New Horizons, requires its own procedure; check the game-specific instructions before starting. See Nintendo’s user-transfer instructions.
Move a single save while keeping both consoles
On the consoles, open System Settings > Data Management > Transfer Your Save Data and follow the prompts. The same Nintendo Account must be linked to a user on each console. Both systems need internet access and must be near each other. Nintendo Switch Online is not required for this direct nearby transfer, and the transferred save is removed from the source when it completes. See Nintendo’s save-data transfer instructions.

Transfer from Switch to Switch 2
Switch-to-Switch 2 migration uses a dedicated system-transfer flow during Switch 2 initial setup. If both consoles are available, local communication is the intended method. Because the process can include all users, let other people who use the old console know before starting. Some data and saves are handled differently depending on cloud backup and game support; follow the setup prompts and Nintendo’s Switch 2 transfer instructions.
If the old Switch is unavailable
Nintendo’s server-transfer option uploads data from the source and then initializes the old console. Uploaded data is retained for up to one year; the actual download deadline appears during setup and in Nintendo Account settings. This is not simply account linking, so do not start it if you need the old console left intact.

If Switch 2 setup is already complete
Link the same Nintendo Account to a user on Switch 2, then use the separate save-data transfer option for saves still available on the old console. See Nintendo’s Switch 2 transfer instructions.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. If you no longer have the old console
Sign in on the new console to access and download digital games associated with your account. Local save data returns only if it was backed up with Save Data Cloud, the game supports cloud backup, and your Nintendo Switch Online membership is still active. Account sign-in cannot restore an unbacked local save. See Nintendo’s digital-game and save-data guidance.
Should you unlink or delete the old user?
You do not need to unlink the account first: Nintendo allows one account to be linked to users on multiple Switch and Switch 2 consoles. Once an account is linked to a user, that association cannot be changed for that user. Nintendo describes deleting the user as the way to remove the local association, but deleting a user also deletes that user’s locally stored saves. Do not delete the old profile just to link the account on a new console. See Nintendo’s account-linking guidance.
