Before importing a game: install Delta and prepare the file
Delta must be installed before a game file can be imported. Delta’s user guide lists the App Store for users outside the European Union and AltStore PAL for users in the EU. Store availability and regional distribution rules can change, so verify the current official listing for your region before installing.
Delta is an emulator, not a game store. Delta’s troubleshooting documentation states, “Unfortunately we are not able to distribute games from Delta directly.” Use game files you are legally entitled to possess, such as personal backups where permitted by applicable law. This guide does not link to unauthorized ROM repositories.
Have the game file available in the iPhone’s Files app or in a location that the Files picker can access. The file extension should match the console system you intend to emulate. A compressed download or archive may need to be opened so that the actual supported game file is available; the official documentation lists supported ROM extensions, but does not guarantee every third-party archive format.
Where can you legally get a game file?
Use a game file from a lawful source or a personal backup where local law permits that use. Delta’s Importing Games page also mentions hardware such as GB Operator as one possible way for owners of original cartridges to obtain game files. GB Operator is optional and is not required to use Delta.
How do you import a ROM into Delta on an iPhone?
- Open Delta on the iPhone.
- Tap the + button in the upper-right corner of Delta’s main screen.
- Choose the location containing your game file in the iPhone’s Files picker.
- Tap the compatible game file.
- Wait for the game to appear in Delta’s library.
- Tap the game’s cover or library entry to launch it.
The first launch should open the selected game with Delta’s on-screen controller skin. If the game does not appear, returns to the library, freezes, or displays an error, use the troubleshooting checks below before assuming that the emulator is incompatible.

Which ROM file extensions does Delta support?
Delta’s official Importing Games documentation identifies the following extensions for the listed systems:
| System | Supported extensions | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| NES | .nes |
The selected file should be the actual NES game file. |
| SNES | .smc, .sfc, .fig |
Match the extension to an SNES game rather than relying on the filename alone. |
| Game Boy | .gb |
Use a Game Boy-compatible file. |
| Game Boy Color | .gbc |
Use a Game Boy Color-compatible file. |
| Game Boy Advance | .gba |
Use a Game Boy Advance-compatible file. |
| Nintendo DS | .ds, .nds |
DS games may also need system files in Core Settings. |
| Nintendo 64 | .n64, .z64 |
Use a supported Nintendo 64 ROM file. |
| Sega Genesis | .gen, .bin, .md, .smd |
Confirm that the file is a Genesis game and not an unrelated binary file. |
These extensions indicate the formats Delta documents as supported; they do not mean that every ROM dump, regional release, archive, modification, or hack will work. The complete format list is available in Delta’s official Importing Games guide.
Do Nintendo DS games need BIOS files in Delta?
Nintendo DS games may need BIOS or other system files imported through Delta’s Nintendo DS settings. A DS game can therefore require an extra setup step beyond selecting a supported .ds or .nds file.
Use this sequence when a Nintendo DS game will not start:
- Confirm that the game file ends in
.dsor.nds. - Open Delta’s Settings.
- Open Core Settings.
- Choose the Nintendo DS-specific section.
- Import any required system files shown by Delta.
- Return to the game library and try the DS game again.
Delta’s Settings documentation confirms that system-specific options, including Nintendo DS BIOS importing, are available under Settings > Core Settings. The official material used for this guide does not enumerate every required DS filename, so do not rely on an unverified filename list or an unofficial BIOS-download site. Import only system files you are legally entitled to possess. See Delta’s Settings guide for the documented location.

Why will a ROM not load in Delta?
A ROM that will not load in Delta is commonly caused by an unsupported extension, an archive being selected instead of the game file, a corrupted or altered dump, missing Nintendo DS system files, or compatibility limitations in a ROM hack.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches1. Check the file extension
Compare the extension with Delta’s documented list. A file intended for NES, SNES, Game Boy, GBA, DS, Nintendo 64, or Genesis should use one of the corresponding extensions above. An unsupported extension may prevent Delta from recognizing the file correctly.
2. Make sure you selected the actual game file
If the download is compressed, the item visible in Files may be an archive rather than the supported ROM inside it. Expose the actual game file before importing. The extension alone is not proof that a file is a valid or complete game dump.
3. Try a clean, lawful copy
Delta’s troubleshooting guidance notes that ROMs can be corrupted and that altered files can cause problems. If one file freezes, crashes, or refuses to launch, test a clean copy that you are legally entitled to use rather than repeatedly importing the same damaged file.
4. Treat ROM hacks separately
ROM hacks can introduce compatibility problems, especially when the modification is large or requires additional software. Delta specifically warns that some larger hacks may not work reliably. A successful original release does not prove that a modified version will run.

5. Check Nintendo DS system files
For DS games, revisit Settings > Core Settings and import the required system files shown in Delta. Missing system files can produce a different failure pattern from a damaged game file.
6. Do not assume universal compatibility
Delta’s supported extensions describe the file types the emulator can import, not a guarantee that every dump, region, hack, or modified release will run. If a clean, supported file still fails after the relevant system setup, the particular release may be incompatible. Delta’s official troubleshooting guide provides the applicable guidance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Should you use touch controls or an external controller?
Touch controls are the quickest option because Delta displays an on-screen controller automatically, while an external controller generally offers better button precision and comfort for long sessions.
| Control method | Comfort | Portability | Button precision | Setup effort | Compatibility and cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| On-screen controls | Fine for short sessions; can feel cramped | Highest, because no accessory is needed | Lower than physical buttons for demanding games | None | Included with Delta; works immediately |
| External controller | Better for longer sessions | Requires carrying another device | Usually better for precise inputs | Pair or connect the controller and configure mappings if needed | Controller and iPhone/iOS compatibility should be checked |
Delta’s official press kit lists support for MFi controllers, PS4, PS5, Xbox One S, Xbox Series X, and Bluetooth and wired controllers. Delta also supports customizable button mappings per system and per controller. If touch controls feel cramped, a Bluetooth game controller for iPhone is an optional comfort upgrade, not a requirement.

Can you import multiple ROMs into Delta?
Yes, you can repeat the same +-button workflow for each compatible game file, and each successfully imported game appears in Delta’s library. Importing several files does not remove the need to check their extensions, file integrity, legality, and— for Nintendo DS titles—required system files.
For the smoothest setup, import one game first and confirm that it launches. Then add the rest of the collection. Testing one known-good file makes it easier to tell whether a later problem comes from Delta’s installation, a particular game file, or a system-specific requirement.
