If you mean a block type—such as diamond ore or a particular decorative block—Minecraft’s built-in /locate command does not search the world for it. It locates structures and biomes. If you mean a structure or biome, use /locate; if you mean a block at a known position, a block check can test that position without searching the world.
What /locate can find
Minecraft’s official command guide describes /locate as finding the nearest structure or biome of a specified type. For example, its Java guide gives /locate structure minecraft:stronghold as a structure search. The command does not locate every occurrence of an arbitrary block type. Minecraft’s official command guide documents the structure-and-biome scope.
On Bedrock, Microsoft’s command reference lists /locate biome <biome name> and /locate structure <structure name>. It says the command finds the nearest specified target if it exists in the current dimension, and prints an error if it does not. Microsoft Learn’s Bedrock command reference describes this behavior.
How to locate a structure or biome
- Check the edition and version. Java and Bedrock command forms and accepted identifiers can differ. Use the suggestions shown by chat autocomplete for your installed version.
- Open chat and enter the appropriate command. For a Java stronghold example, the official guide uses
/locate structure minecraft:stronghold. In Bedrock, use the documented/locate structure <structure name>or/locate biome <biome name>form. - Choose a suggested identifier and run the command. The result identifies the nearest matching structure or biome, not a block of that type.
Java’s command identifiers have changed over Minecraft’s history. The Java 1.18.2 release notes document namespaced identifiers and tag support for /locate, but those notes are not a complete syntax reference for every later version. Check autocomplete in your current game rather than assuming an identifier from an older example will still apply.

Can you check for a block at a coordinate?
Yes, if you already know where to check. Bedrock’s /execute command supports an if block condition that tests a specified position—for example, a position relative to the player. That answers “is this block here?” It does not scan the world or return all coordinates where that block occurs. The Bedrock reference also documents position- or region-targeted commands such as setblock, fill, and clone; these likewise are not general world-wide block searches.
Enable commands without losing access unexpectedly

Commands require cheats to be enabled. Be aware that enabling cheats permanently disables achievement unlocking in that world, even if you turn cheats off later.
Multiplayer
Command access depends on permissions. If you are playing on someone else’s server or world, ask an operator or owner for the required access rather than assuming the command is available.

For a naturally generated resource or other specific block, use guidance tailored to your edition, version, and world generation rather than treating /locate as a block finder. The official command references cited here do not document a built-in command for searching the whole world for arbitrary block types, and they do not establish that a particular external mod, add-on, seed tool, or server plugin will work with your setup.
