To find a generated structure in Minecraft Java Edition, open chat and run /locate structure followed by the structure’s identifier—for example, /locate structure minecraft:stronghold. The command returns coordinates for the nearest matching structure. You need permission to use commands in that world or on its server.
How do I find a structure in Minecraft Java?
- Check that you can use commands. In a single-player world, enable commands when creating the world or later through World Options. On a multiplayer server, you need sufficient permission; ask the server owner or an operator if you do not have it.
- Open chat and enter the locate command. Commands begin with a forward slash. For example, type
/locate structure minecraft:strongholdand press Enter. The game reports coordinates for the nearest matching stronghold. - Use the returned coordinates. You can travel there yourself or use
/teleportwith the coordinates. Teleporting is optional.
How do I choose the right structure identifier?
Structure identifiers can depend on the Java Edition version. Java 1.18.2 notes document a change to configured-structure arguments and namespaced IDs, and show examples such as village_desert and shipwreck_beached. The command also supports tags, entered with a # prefix. These examples are not a complete list of structures.

Use the game’s command autocomplete to check the arguments accepted by the version you are playing. The official command guide demonstrates minecraft:stronghold; the release notes describe the syntax transition in more detail: Java Edition 1.18.2 notes.
Can I teleport straight to the structure?
Yes. Minecraft’s official command guide says you can use /teleport with the coordinates returned by /locate. However, the reported location is not a guarantee of a safe entrance or landing spot, and the guide does not prescribe a universally safe Y coordinate. Consider the terrain and arrival height before teleporting; arriving inside solid blocks or near hazards can be dangerous. See the official Minecraft commands guide for the locate and teleport workflow.

Why might the command fail?
- You lack command permission: enable commands in your single-player world or ask a server owner or operator for the required permission.
- The identifier is not accepted: check autocomplete in your game version. Structure argument syntax and available identifiers can vary by release.
- The result is far away: locate reports the nearest matching structure; it does not promise that the target is close to your current position.
