How to Lock the Mouse on One Screen While Gaming

Keep your mouse from escaping to a second monitor while gaming with the game’s built-in cursor lock, DisplayFusion, Dual Monitor Tools, or Actual Multiple Monitors.

The most reliable fix is to enable the game’s own cursor-confinement option. If the game does not have one, use DisplayFusion or the free Dual Monitor Tools to lock the pointer to the gaming monitor while keeping your second screen active.

The best way to keep your mouse on one monitor while gaming is to enable the game’s own cursor-confinement option. If the game does not provide one, use a cursor-lock utility such as DisplayFusion or the free Dual Monitor Tools. Windows can rearrange displays and turn monitors off, but it does not provide a universal built-in “lock mouse to this monitor” shortcut while leaving the other screen active.

Try these solutions in order

  1. Enable the game’s confine cursor, lock cursor to window, or similar setting.
  2. Test the game in both exclusive fullscreen and borderless fullscreen.
  3. Use DisplayFusion for a polished commercial solution.
  4. Use Dual Monitor Tools if you want a free, open-source option.
  5. Consider Actual Multiple Monitors if you want a larger multi-monitor management suite.

1. Enable the game’s built-in cursor lock

Game-specific cursor confinement is usually the first option to try because the game already knows when it has focus, when a menu is open, and which input mode it is using.

  • Lock cursor to game window
  • Confine cursor
  • Constrain mouse
  • Capture mouse
  • Keep mouse in window

The exact label varies by game. Test the setting during normal gameplay, menus, map or inventory screens, pause overlays, and cutscenes. Some games confine the cursor during gameplay but release it when a menu or overlay is open.

Test fullscreen modes separately

If the cursor still escapes, test each display mode the game offers:

  • Exclusive fullscreen: traditionally gives the game more direct control of the display and cursor.
  • Borderless fullscreen: behaves more like a maximized window and can have different focus and cursor behavior.
  • Windowed: makes it easiest for Windows to treat the pointer as part of the normal desktop.

Do not assume that every option labeled “fullscreen” works identically. Windows Fullscreen Optimizations can make a game appear to use exclusive fullscreen while it is actually presented through a borderless-style Windows path. As a result, cursor behavior differs between games and systems.

2. Check Windows’ monitor arrangement

Windows’ display controls cannot permanently confine the pointer to one active monitor, but correcting the monitor layout can prevent accidental crossings at unexpected edges.

  1. Right-click the desktop and choose Display settings, or open Settings > System > Display.
  2. Click Identify to show the number assigned to each physical monitor.
  3. Drag the display rectangles so their on-screen arrangement matches your desk.
  4. Click Apply, then move the pointer across the edges to test the layout.

For example, if your second monitor is physically higher than the gaming monitor but Windows places it directly beside it, the pointer may cross at an edge you do not expect. Correcting the layout reduces accidental movement, but it is not a true lock.

You can also use Windows + P to choose PC screen only, Duplicate, Extend, or Second screen only. Turning the second display off while gaming prevents the cursor from reaching it, but it is a display-mode change rather than a mouse-boundary feature.

3. Lock the cursor with DisplayFusion

DisplayFusion is a commercial multi-monitor utility with a documented function called Lock/Unlock Mouse Cursor to Current Monitor. It confines the pointer to the monitor that is current when you activate the function. Pressing the same hotkey again unlocks it.

DisplayFusion also provides a separate focused-window lock. That can be more precise when you want the cursor confined to a game window rather than to the entire gaming monitor.

How to configure DisplayFusion

  1. Install and open DisplayFusion.
  2. Open the DisplayFusion tray menu and select Settings.
  3. Open the Functions tab.
  4. Find Lock/Unlock Mouse Cursor to Current Monitor.
  5. Assign a convenient keyboard shortcut.
  6. Launch the game and place focus on the gaming monitor.
  7. Press the shortcut to lock the pointer to that monitor.
  8. Press the same shortcut again when you need to move the pointer to another display.

Activate the lock after the game is on the intended display. If you lock the wrong monitor, unlock it, move focus to the correct display, and activate the function again.

DisplayFusion is a good choice if you want a polished interface and other multi-monitor features. Its documented function does not guarantee compatibility with every game, anti-cheat system, overlay, input method, or administrator privilege level, so test it before relying on it in a competitive match.

4. Use Dual Monitor Tools for a free option

Dual Monitor Tools is a free, open-source Windows utility distributed under the GPLv3 license. Its Cursor module can lock the pointer onto a monitor, restrict movement between screens, or add resistance so crossing requires extra mouse movement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to configure Dual Monitor Tools

  1. Download Dual Monitor Tools from its current SourceForge project page.
  2. Launch the Cursor component or open its cursor settings.
  3. Enable Lock cursor onto screen.
  4. Assign a lock-and-release hotkey if you want manual control.
  5. Start the game on the desired monitor.
  6. Activate the lock while that monitor is current.
  7. Use the configured release or toggle action when you need access to the rest of the desktop.

The Cursor module can also work as a toggle when no separate hotkey is assigned. The project’s available files and release information can change, so use the current project page rather than relying on an old version number copied from another guide.

There are two practical limitations to keep in mind. First, an elevated game or application may require Dual Monitor Tools to run with equivalent privileges. Second, some fullscreen games capture keyboard shortcuts, preventing the utility from seeing a hotkey after the game launches. If that happens, configure or activate the lock before starting the game, or run the utility at the same privilege level as the game.

5. Consider Actual Multiple Monitors

Actual Multiple Monitors is another commercial multi-monitor suite. Its published features include Lock Mouse, which can lock the pointer within a particular window or monitor, and Ignore Deactivation, which is intended to help prevent a game from being minimized when you use another display.

This is most useful if you want broader desktop and monitor-management features instead of a single-purpose cursor lock. Licensing, configuration, and compatibility differ from DisplayFusion, so compare the current product details and test the game before purchasing.

Why changing mouse settings does not fix this

Windows mouse options change how the pointer looks or feels; they do not create a monitor boundary. In particular:

  • Pointer speed changes sensitivity but does not stop the pointer.
  • Pointer trails change visibility only.
  • Pointer appearance changes the cursor’s design or size.
  • ClickLock lets you drag or highlight without holding the mouse button; it is not cursor confinement.
  • A different gaming mouse may change feel or tracking, but it cannot normally lock Windows’ pointer to one display.

Troubleshooting: the cursor still escapes

The game is on the wrong monitor

Confirm which display Windows identifies as 1 and 2, then check the game’s monitor or display selection. Move the game to the intended screen before activating a current-monitor lock.

The cursor escapes only in menus or overlays

This may be intentional game behavior. Test gameplay, menus, inventory, map screens, and pause overlays separately. A third-party monitor lock may keep the pointer on the display, but it may not restore the game’s expected focus behavior.

The problem began after opening Xbox Game Bar

Microsoft has documented a multi-monitor issue in which the mouse could unlock from a game window after Xbox Game Bar was opened and closed. Update Windows, then test with Game Bar disabled. If the issue disappears, re-enable overlays one at a time to identify the trigger.

The hotkey does nothing in fullscreen

Configure the lock before launching the game. Fullscreen games can capture keyboard input, so a utility may not receive its shortcut once the game has focus. Also check whether the utility and game are running with different privilege levels.

The game minimizes when the pointer crosses screens

Rearranging the monitors may reduce accidental crossings, but use a genuine monitor or window lock if minimization continues. DisplayFusion’s current-monitor lock, Dual Monitor Tools’ screen lock, and Actual Multiple Monitors’ Lock Mouse or Ignore Deactivation features address this more directly.

The lock causes problems with an anti-cheat system or overlay

Cursor utilities are not guaranteed to work with every anti-cheat system, overlay, raw-input implementation, or privilege level. Test the setup in a non-competitive session first. If the game behaves incorrectly, remove the utility from the game session and use the game’s own cursor option or temporarily disable the second display instead.

Which method should you choose?

Situation Best starting point Reason
The game has a cursor setting Built-in cursor confinement It is designed around that game’s focus and input behavior.
You want a polished paid utility DisplayFusion It offers current-monitor and focused-window cursor locks plus broader monitor tools.
You want a free/open-source tool Dual Monitor Tools Its Cursor module supports monitor locking, resistance, and hotkeys.
You want a complete multi-monitor suite Actual Multiple Monitors It combines Lock Mouse with features such as Ignore Deactivation.
You only need a temporary workaround Windows + P Switching to one active display prevents crossing, but disables or changes the second-screen setup.

Bottom line

Start with the game’s own confine cursor option and test fullscreen and borderless modes separately. If the pointer still reaches the second monitor, DisplayFusion is the straightforward commercial choice, while Dual Monitor Tools provides a free/open-source alternative. Correct monitor placement helps, but Windows itself does not offer a universal native lock that keeps the second display active while permanently trapping the mouse on one screen.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Windows have a built-in lock mouse to monitor feature?

Windows can rearrange monitors and switch between display modes, but it does not provide a universal native command that locks the cursor to one monitor while leaving the others active. Use the game’s own setting or a cursor-lock utility.

What is the easiest way to lock the mouse to one screen?

Try the game’s cursor-confinement setting first. If that is unavailable or unreliable, configure DisplayFusion’s “Lock/Unlock Mouse Cursor to Current Monitor” or Dual Monitor Tools’ “Lock cursor onto screen” feature.

Why does my cursor-lock hotkey not work in fullscreen games?

Yes, but fullscreen games may capture the utility’s hotkey. Configure or activate the lock before launching the game, and run the utility with equivalent privileges if the game is running as administrator.

Does Windows ClickLock keep the mouse on one screen?

ClickLock only lets you drag or highlight without continuously holding the mouse button. It does not restrict the pointer to a monitor.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Use the game’s built-in cursor-confinement setting first. If it is missing or unreliable, lock the pointer with DisplayFusion or Dual Monitor Tools; use Actual Multiple Monitors if you want a broader multi-monitor suite. Windows display arrangement alone reduces accidental crossings but does not truly lock the mouse to one active monitor.
