To log in to Linux with PuTTY as a normal user, connect to the server over SSH and enter the remote account’s username when PuTTY asks for login as:. Use that account’s password, or authenticate with a private key that has been authorized for the same account. You do not need to type root, and your Windows username is unrelated to the Linux account name.
Need a server to try this on? Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with NVMe storage, full root access and a 14-day free trial.
This guide explains how to set the PuTTY username, connect with either password or public-key authentication, correct a mistyped username, and resolve the key-permission problems that commonly prevent a non-root login.

What a non-root PuTTY login means
PuTTY is an SSH client. It does not select a generic “Linux user” for you; it authenticates the specific account name supplied to the SSH server. If an administrator gave you an account such as deploy, alex, or support, that is the name to enter. The account may have fewer privileges than root, which is normally intentional.
The username is evaluated by the remote Linux or Unix server. It is not your Windows sign-in name, your PuTTY profile name, or the name of a private-key file. A successful connection opens a shell with the permissions of that remote account.

“If you are using SSH, be careful not to type your username wrongly, because you will not have a chance to correct it after you press Return; many SSH servers do not permit you to make two login attempts using different usernames.”
— PuTTY getting-started documentation
Information you need before opening PuTTY
Collect these details from the server administrator or hosting documentation:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Host: the server’s DNS name or IP address.
- SSH port: normally
22, unless the administrator supplied a different port. - Remote username: the non-root account you are supposed to use.
- Password or private key: the password for that account, or the approved private key and its passphrase.
- Host-key procedure: the method your organization uses to verify a server’s SSH host key.
PuTTY cannot create an account, enable SSH for it, or grant privileges. If you do not know the account name or port, obtain those values before troubleshooting the client.
Step-by-step: log in with a non-root username
1. Open the Session screen
- Start PuTTY.
- In Session, enter the server’s host name or IP address in Host Name (or IP address).
- Enter the supplied SSH port. Leave it at
22only when the server uses the normal SSH port. - Select SSH as the connection type.
- Choose Open.
These settings tell PuTTY to make an SSH login session rather than a Telnet or serial connection. A saved session is optional; saving it does not replace the need for a valid remote account.
2. Verify the server host key
On a first connection, PuTTY may display a security alert containing the server’s host key. Verify that key using your organization’s approved procedure before accepting it. The host key identifies the server endpoint; it is different from the user password or the public key used to authenticate your account.

If the key is unexpected, stop and ask the administrator. Do not accept a warning merely because the username or password is correct. If you have connected to this server before and PuTTY reports that its host key has changed, treat that as a separate server-identity issue and follow the administrator’s incident procedure.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3. Set the remote username
There are two ways to provide the account name:
- Wait for the terminal prompt
login as:, then type the server-side non-root username and press Enter. - Prefill it in Connection > Data > Auto-login username before opening the session.
Enter the exact spelling and capitalization supplied by the administrator. Do not prepend a Windows domain, type an email address, or substitute root unless the administrator explicitly assigned that account.
If you entered the wrong name and pressed Enter, close the PuTTY window and start a new session. Many SSH servers will not let you try a second username during the same login attempt, so waiting for another prompt often cannot fix the mistake.
4. Authenticate with the account’s password
At the password prompt, type the password belonging to the non-root account. PuTTY normally does not display characters, asterisks, or cursor movement while you type; that is expected. Press Enter when finished.
Use the remote account’s password, not your Windows password and not a root password. If the server rejects it, check that the account exists, is allowed to use SSH, and has not been locked or otherwise restricted. Those checks are controlled by server policy, not by PuTTY’s username field.

5. Confirm that the session is the intended account
Once authentication succeeds, the shell belongs to the username you supplied. Read the server’s login banner and prompt, and follow your organization’s normal account-checking procedure before making changes. A non-root login remains limited to that account even when the account can perform selected administrative tasks.
6. Use approved privilege escalation only after login
Do not switch to a root login simply because a command needs administration. Run privileged commands through the server’s approved policy, commonly sudo, and provide any requested authentication. Whether your account may use sudo, which commands are allowed, and whether a password is required are distribution- and administrator-specific decisions. Ask the administrator when the account lacks permission rather than trying unrelated PuTTY settings.
Password authentication versus public-key authentication
Both methods authenticate the same remote non-root account. The difference is how the server proves that you are authorized.
| Aspect | Password | Public key |
|---|---|---|
| Setup effort | Requires the account to have an SSH password and the user to type it at connection time. | Requires the public key to be installed for the target account and the matching private key to be available to PuTTY. |
| What PuTTY uses | The password entered at the SSH prompt. | The private key, optionally protected by a passphrase; the server checks its matching public key. |
| Account scope | The password authenticates whichever remote username you entered. | Authorization is per account: the public key must be in that user’s home directory, in ~/.ssh/authorized_keys. |
| Operational security | There is a secret to type and protect; server password policy determines whether the method is permitted. | The private key stays with the user and can be protected by a passphrase. The server receives proof from the key, not the private key itself. |
| Recovery | An administrator can reset or replace the account password according to policy. | An administrator must install another authorized public key, repair the existing entry, or provide an alternative approved login if the private key is lost. |
The server administrator decides which methods are enabled. Selecting a key in PuTTY cannot make a server accept public-key authentication if the account or SSH service disallows it.
Recommended Free Tools
Set up public-key login for a non-root account
Prepare the account’s authorized key
Generate or obtain the approved key pair according to your organization’s procedure. The server needs the public-key text from PuTTYgen, not the private-key file. Put that public-key text in the target account’s ~/.ssh/authorized_keys file.
The entry must remain on one line. Do not wrap it across multiple lines when copying it. The file belongs to the intended non-root account: a key installed under one user’s home directory does not automatically authorize another user.

Select the matching private key in PuTTY
- Open the PuTTY session configuration.
- Go to Connection > SSH > Auth (the authentication page in your PuTTY version).
- Use the private-key file selector to choose the private key corresponding to the public key installed in the remote account’s
authorized_keys. - Return to Session, confirm the host, port, and SSH type, and open the connection.
- At
login as:, enter the same remote username whose home directory contains the authorized key.
Instead of selecting the key in the graphical client, PuTTY’s command-line tools can use the corresponding private key with the -i option, or you can load the key into Pageant. Whichever method you choose, the username and key must refer to the same server account.
Check key and directory permissions
OpenSSH may ignore an otherwise correct key when the account’s home directory, .ssh directory, or key file is writable by the group or by other users. The PuTTY manual gives this typical adjustment:
Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchPC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11chmod go-w $HOME $HOME/.ssh $HOME/.ssh/authorized_keys
Run permission changes only with the administrator’s approval and with the correct account selected. Also confirm that the home directory, .ssh, and authorized_keys are owned by the target user. Your server’s security policy may require more restrictive permissions or a different ownership arrangement.
Choosing how PuTTY supplies the username
| Method | Best for | Benefit | Risk or limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
Interactive login as: |
Shared workstations, occasional connections, or sessions to several accounts. | You can inspect and type the account name for each connection. | A typo made before pressing Enter usually requires a new PuTTY session. |
| Connection > Data > Auto-login username | A saved session that always connects to one assigned account. | It removes repetitive typing and reduces accidental entry of a different name. | If the session is copied or repurposed, the saved name may be wrong; review it before opening. |
Auto-login stores a username preference, not a password and not authorization. You still need the account’s password or private key, and the server still decides whether that account may connect.

PuTTY asks for the wrong username
Close the session and open a fresh one. Either clear the value under Connection > Data > Auto-login username and type the intended name at login as:, or replace the saved value with the correct account. Do not try to force a second username into an already-submitted SSH login.

Password rejected
- Check that you are using the password for the remote non-root account, not a Windows or root password.
- Check spelling of the username and reconnect if it was wrong.
- Ask the administrator whether the account exists and is permitted to use SSH.
- Confirm that the account is not locked, expired, or subject to an access policy that blocks this connection.
- Verify the host and port; a valid password for one server does not authenticate you to another.
PuTTY can display the prompt and send the credentials, but it cannot verify a particular server’s account policy.
“Server refused our key”
This message means the server did not accept the key offered for the account. Work through these checks in order:
- Make sure the private key selected in PuTTY matches the public key installed on the server.
- Confirm that the public-key text is in the intended user’s
~/.ssh/authorized_keys, not another account’s file. - Confirm that the key entry is on one line and was not truncated or altered while copying.
- Check ownership of the home directory,
.ssh, andauthorized_keys. - Check that the home directory,
.ssh, and key file are not group-writable or world-writable; apply the administrator-approved permissions if necessary. - Reconnect with the intended username after correcting the server-side file.
A key that works for one account proves only that the key is authorized for that account. It does not authorize the same key for every user.
The key works for one account but not another
Install the public key separately in the second account’s home directory and connect using that account’s username. SSH authorization is per user. Check the second account’s file ownership, permissions, and exact key line independently of the working account.
The server never reaches the username prompt
Recheck the host name or IP address, SSH port, and connection type in PuTTY’s Session screen. If the server is listening on a nonstandard port, port 22 will not reach the SSH service. If the host-key alert or another server policy warning appears, follow the administrator’s procedure rather than repeatedly changing usernames.
You logged in but cannot run an administrative command
That is expected when the non-root account has no permission for the requested operation. Use the approved privilege-escalation command, commonly sudo, if the administrator granted it. If the command remains unauthorized, request the required role or policy change; logging in as root is not a PuTTY fix.
Practical checklist before every connection
- Host name or IP address is correct.
- SSH port matches the administrator’s value.
- Connection type is SSH.
- Host key is verified according to your organization’s process.
- Auto-login username is blank or contains the intended non-root account.
- Password belongs to that remote account, or the selected private key matches its
authorized_keysentry. - For key login, the public key is one line, owned by the target account, and stored in that account’s home directory.
- Any administrative command will use the server’s approved privilege-escalation policy after login.
Key points to remember
PuTTY authenticates the remote account name you provide. Set it interactively at login as: or prefill it under Connection > Data > Auto-login username. If the name is wrong, restart the session. For key authentication, place the public key in the intended user’s ~/.ssh/authorized_keys and select the matching private key. Finally, treat directory and key-file permissions as part of authentication, and perform administrative work only through the server’s approved policy after the non-root login succeeds.
