Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11To loop a prerecorded video as a YouTube livestream from a remote Linux server, run FFmpeg with -stream_loop -1 before the input file, pace the file with -re, and send the encoded output to the current RTMPS server URL and stream key from YouTube Studio. The server keeps the process running without your home computer, but you still need to monitor the encoder and YouTube stream health.
Before you start
- A YouTube channel eligible to livestream: YouTube says it must be verified, have no livestream restriction in the previous 90 days, and the streamer must be at least 16. Check the current requirements in YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
- A remote Linux server with FFmpeg installed, the authorized video file on disk, and enough network capacity to sustain the selected outgoing bitrate. YouTube does not prescribe a particular Linux distribution, hosting provider, or server plan.
- A YouTube event or stream configured in Live Control Room, with its current server URL and stream key. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
- Permission to stream the video and its audio. Looping a file does not grant rights to copyrighted material; livestreams remain subject to YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service.
Set up the YouTube stream
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Create > Go live. Create or select the broadcast in Live Control Room, then choose a privacy setting appropriate for your test or audience.
- Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that stream. Use the current values from Studio rather than an endpoint copied from an old tutorial. YouTube treats the stream key like a password: do not put it in a public script, screenshot, shell history, or publicly readable log.
- For a scheduled broadcast, start the encoder and wait for the preview in Live Control Room. YouTube’s setup instructions say to click Go live after the preview appears.
YouTube describes the key and server URL in its encoder setup guide. If the key is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room; see YouTube’s stream-key guidance.
Prepare and inspect the video on Linux
Install FFmpeg using the package source for your Linux distribution, then confirm the file is present and inspect its streams before starting a long run:
ffprobe -hide_banner /path/to/video.mp4
Check that the file has the intended video and audio streams, and note its resolution, frame rate, codecs, and audio format. If the video has no audio, do not assume an audio stream exists; configure output accordingly or prepare a file with an audio track. Keep the media file somewhere the service account running FFmpeg can read.

Build the FFmpeg command
This template loops the file indefinitely and reads it at its native frame rate. Replace the placeholders with your file path, settings appropriate to the source, and the exact RTMPS server URL and stream key from Live Control Room:
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i /path/to/video.mp4
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v VIDEO_BITRATE
-maxrate VIDEO_MAXRATE -bufsize VIDEO_BUFSIZE
-pix_fmt yuv420p -g KEYFRAME_INTERVAL
-c:a aac -b:a AUDIO_BITRATE -ar 44100
-f flv "RTMPS_SERVER_URL/STREAM_KEY"
The placeholders are not literal FFmpeg values: set bitrate, buffer size, keyframe interval, and audio bitrate to match your resolution, frame rate, and YouTube’s current encoder guidance. For example, do not paste the words VIDEO_BITRATE into a running command. YouTube’s settings change and vary by resolution and frame rate; consult the current encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions before choosing values.

-stream_loop -1is an input option for infinite repetition. Keep it before the corresponding-i.-rereads the file at native frame rate, avoiding a file being pushed as fast as the server can read it. FFmpeg documents it as equivalent to-readrate 1. It is intended here because the input is a file; do not apply low read-rate throttling to a real-time capture or network input.-c:v libx264and-c:a aacare example encoder choices, not universal requirements. Match supported codecs, frame rate, resolution, bitrate, and keyframe interval to YouTube’s current guidance.-f flvspecifies the output container commonly used for YouTube RTMP-family ingestion. Use the RTMPS endpoint and protocol supplied for the stream.
FFmpeg’s official documentation explains input-option placement and loop/read-rate behavior in its command-line documentation. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encoder streams. RTMPS uses TLS; YouTube’s ingestion guidance specifies a valid endpoint and path, TLS on port 443, and hostname information for server authentication through SNI. Use the Studio-provided endpoint rather than constructing one yourself; see YouTube’s RTMPS ingestion guide.
Keep the stream key out of shell history
Putting a key directly in a command can expose it through shell history or process inspection, depending on how the command is run and the server’s configuration. A safer basic pattern is to enter it interactively into a variable with history disabled for that line, then run the command without echoing the value:

unset STREAM_KEY
This reduces accidental disclosure in interactive shell history but is not a complete secret-management system; shell/process visibility, terminal recording, and logs vary by environment. Restrict server access, do not share the command output, and reset the key if you suspect exposure.
Start, verify, and monitor
- Run the command in a persistent session or a service manager appropriate to your Linux distribution and operating practices. A disconnected SSH session may end a foreground process, so do not assume that closing the terminal leaves FFmpeg running.
- Watch FFmpeg’s output for connection or encoding errors, then check the Live Control Room preview and stream health. Confirm that both picture and audio are present before making the broadcast public.
- During the run, monitor the server process, outbound network, and YouTube’s stream health. YouTube’s livestreaming tips recommend checking the preview and monitoring audio and video quality.
- Plan for the lifecycle of the broadcast as well as the FFmpeg process. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume that rule applies to streams lasting 12 hours or more. A process looping continuously is not the same thing as guaranteed archive retention.
For programmatic setups, YouTube’s API distinguishes the broadcast (the event/video) from the inbound stream. Its documentation describes a 24/7 feed and a separate interview broadcast sharing a stream as an API resource example, not as a blanket approval or guarantee of availability, monetization, or uninterrupted delivery: Understanding broadcasts and streams.

Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg rejects an option or does not loop | An input option is placed after the input, or the installed FFmpeg build differs. | Put -stream_loop -1 before the relevant -i; check ffmpeg -version and the command syntax. |
| YouTube never receives a preview | Wrong or stale endpoint/key, incorrect RTMPS destination, blocked outbound connection, or an ineligible channel. | Copy the current server URL and key from Studio, verify outbound access to the provided RTMPS endpoint, and confirm channel eligibility. |
| Connection or TLS errors | Malformed endpoint/path, incorrect protocol, DNS/network issue, or TLS/SNI handling problem. | Use the complete Studio-provided RTMPS URL and hostname; YouTube’s RTMPS guide specifies TLS and port 443. Do not substitute an old hard-coded address. |
| Video is choppy or YouTube reports poor stream health | Bitrate, frame rate, keyframe interval, server resources, or network capacity does not fit the source and target settings. | Compare actual output settings with YouTube’s current encoder table and check server load and sustained outbound capacity. |
| Picture appears but audio is missing or wrong | The file has no audio stream, the chosen audio codec/settings are unsuitable, or the wrong input was selected. | Inspect with ffprobe; verify the audio stream and encoder output in FFmpeg logs and Studio preview. |
| Stream stops after closing SSH | FFmpeg was attached to the foreground terminal session. | Use a persistent session or an OS service manager configured for your system; service files, logging, firewall rules, and restart policy depend on the distribution and provider. |
| Stream key may have been exposed | Key was pasted into a public script, screenshot, log, or shared terminal. | Reset the key in YouTube Live Control Room and update the server’s protected configuration. |
Automatic reconnect behavior and reliable restart supervision depend on the exact FFmpeg build, command, server, and network. Test recovery privately rather than assuming that a running process guarantees uninterrupted delivery.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is an always-on prerecorded YouTube feed rather than managing a Linux process, StreamNeo runs the loop in the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; any quality up to 4K 60fps streams as uploaded at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers. It automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card; monthly billing is $9.99 per month. It streams to YouTube only, and plays uploaded videos rather than going live from a camera. Start the free first day.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does FFmpeg need a graphical desktop on the remote server?
No. FFmpeg can run from a Linux shell; the YouTube preview and controls are accessed separately in Live Control Room.
Can I use this method to loop a video I do not own?
No. Looping changes how a file is transmitted, not whether you have the rights to stream its video and audio.
Can I rely on a 24/7 FFmpeg feed to create one permanent YouTube archive?
No archive-retention guarantee follows from running FFmpeg continuously; YouTube’s stated automatic archive rule covers streams shorter than 12 hours.
