What’s actually slowing this PC down?

To lower ping while gaming, start by choosing a nearby game server, using Ethernet if possible, and pausing downloads or uploads that compete for your connection. If ping only jumps when your household is online, the problem is likely congestion; if it stays high on a wired connection across games, the server route or your ISP may be responsible. Ping measures a round trip between your device and a server, so faster download speeds alone do not guarantee a more responsive game.
First, identify what is actually wrong
Before changing settings, note whether the problem is high ping all the time, spikes during household internet use, packet loss, or choppy gameplay caused by low frame rates. These symptoms can feel similar but call for different fixes. Use your game’s network statistics if available, and compare results before and after changing one thing at a time.

- High baseline ping: The connection is consistently slow to the game server. Server distance and internet routing can matter more than your home hardware.
- Ping spikes under load: Latency rises while someone downloads, uploads, backs up files, or streams. This points toward congestion or queues on the shared connection.
- Packet loss or jitter: Lost or irregularly delayed packets can cause rubberbanding and inconsistent play even when average ping looks acceptable.
- Frame-rate stutter: If network statistics remain steady while the image stutters, investigate game performance rather than assuming ping is the cause.
Epic Games Support says consistently more than about 1% packet loss can cause in-game problems; this is a troubleshooting indicator, not a universal threshold for every game or network. Epic’s Fortnite connection troubleshooting explains how to check connection issues.
Eight ways to lower ping or make it more stable
1. Choose the closest suitable game server
If the game has a region selector or server browser, compare the displayed latency and choose a nearby server with a good result. A country or region label does not guarantee the shortest route, so use the game’s latency display when available. Steam Support recommends checking server latency and content-server region; Intel also notes that the distance between your PC and its destination affects latency.

Steam’s connection and server guidance covers latency and server selection. Intel’s gaming latency guide explains why the route to a destination matters.
2. Connect by Ethernet
When practical, connect your PC or console directly to the router with an Ethernet cable. A wired link avoids many sources of Wi-Fi interference and can make the connection more consistent, but it cannot shorten the route to a distant server or fix ISP routing. Activision’s concise recommendation is, “Play on a wired connection.”
Activision’s Modern Warfare II troubleshooting guide recommends a wired connection. A Cat 6 Ethernet cable is a suitable option for connecting a device to a router; the cable itself does not upgrade your internet service or guarantee lower ping.

3. Pause competing downloads, uploads, and streams
Pause large downloads, cloud backups, uploads, and high-resolution streams on the same connection while you play. If ping spikes stop, the likely problem is traffic competing for available bandwidth or waiting in a queue—not necessarily inadequate gaming hardware. Epic recommends avoiding large concurrent downloads, uploads, and streams.
Epic’s network troubleshooting steps address competing traffic. If several devices share a limited connection, ask household members to pause heavy transfers during a match.
4. Improve Wi-Fi if you cannot run a cable
Move closer to the router or access point, reduce the number of walls and obstructions, and test a Wi-Fi band supported by both your router and device. The 2.4 GHz band reaches farther but can be crowded; another band may perform better nearby, depending on the home and neighboring networks. Compare the game’s ping and stability after each change rather than assuming one band is always best.

5. Try QoS or SQM only if traffic congestion is the problem
Some routers offer Quality of Service (QoS) settings that prioritize a device or type of traffic. Smart Queue Management (SQM) can help manage queues when a connection is saturated. These are worth testing when ping rises as other people use the connection, not as a guaranteed remedy for high baseline latency.
Router influence on total latency is generally limited when the home connection is not overloaded. RTINGS’ router analysis, updated June 5, 2025, identifies local bandwidth overload as the main situation where router features can help. Read RTINGS’ explanation of router latency. Activision also discusses QoS in its Modern Warfare II troubleshooting guide. Menu names and options vary by router; check its current documentation and test the result in-game.
6. Track packet loss and jitter separately from ping
Turn on your game’s network display, if available, and record ping, packet loss, and spikes before and after a change. Average ping alone can hide short disruptions. Packet loss can cause rubberbanding even on a connection with high download bandwidth; consistently more than about 1% loss can cause in-game problems, according to Epic Games Support.

7. Restart or update network equipment when trouble is recent
If connection problems began recently or affect several devices, power-cycle the router and check whether a firmware update is available. Intel includes both steps in packet-loss troubleshooting. Change one thing at a time and retest so you can tell whether it helped.

8. Escalate persistent problems on Ethernet
If high latency or packet loss persists over Ethernet across multiple games, record when it happens, which servers you use, and the network statistics. Contact your ISP if the issue appears across services, or game support if it is limited to one game or server region. A distant game server can have higher latency even when your home connection is working normally. Port forwarding is not a general ping fix; Steam mentions it for a specific server-access situation.
See Steam Support’s connection guidance and Activision’s troubleshooting instructions.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to tell which fix is most likely to help
| What you observe | What to test first | What it may indicate |
|---|---|---|
| Only one game or server region has high ping | Compare other regions or games; check the game’s server selector | Server distance, route, or game-side issue |
| Ping rises when someone downloads, uploads, or streams | Pause that traffic; then test QoS or SQM if your router supports it | Congestion or queued traffic on the shared connection |
| Wi-Fi is unstable but Ethernet is steady | Stay wired if practical; otherwise test distance, obstructions, and bands | Local wireless conditions |
| Several games and devices have trouble, including over Ethernet | Record timing and loss; contact your ISP | Home network, ISP connection, or broader routing issue |
| Ping looks steady but the game still stutters | Check frame rate and game performance indicators | Potentially a performance issue rather than network latency |
When new hardware is unlikely to lower ping
A gaming-branded router is not a reliable fix for an otherwise stable baseline ping. A router with QoS or SQM is most relevant when household traffic saturates the connection and causes latency spikes. If the delay comes from a distant server or the ISP’s route, replacing the router cannot remove that distance or control the external route.
