The Town of Salem website, operated by BlankMediaGames, suffered a database breach reported on 28 December 2018. A reproduced breach notification listed 7,633,234 affected accounts; Check Point described the total as more than 7.6 million players. Reported data included email addresses, usernames, IP addresses, activity details and hashed passwords. The scope of any payment information remains disputed.
What happened in the Town of Salem breach?
BlankMediaGames’ Town of Salem website database was breached on 28 December 2018. The incident became public through operator communication on 3 January 2019 and independent security reporting shortly afterward. This was a breach of account data associated with the website, not evidence that the game itself was modified or that every player’s device was compromised.

How many accounts were affected?
A contemporaneous Have I Been Pwned/DeHashed notification reproduced a count of 7,633,234 accounts. Check Point’s 7 January 2019 bulletin rounded this to more than 7.6 million players. The exact figure refers to accounts in the notification; “7.6 million players” is the rounded description used in the security bulletin.

What information was exposed?
The reproduced notification listed browser user-agent details, email addresses, IP addresses, passwords, purchase information, usernames and website activity. Check Point separately reported email addresses, hashed passwords, IP addresses and “some payment information.” These are descriptions of fields reported in the breached data, not confirmation that every field was present for every account.

Were Town of Salem passwords leaked?
Passwords were included as hashes, not as plain-text passwords, according to both the notification and a BlankMediaGames moderator statement reproduced in a contemporaneous thread. The notification described the hashes as phpass. Hashing is different from storing a readable password, but it does not make password reuse safe: a stolen hash may still create risk, particularly if the original password was weak or reused.
Were credit-card numbers exposed?
The available accounts conflict on payment data. Check Point said the database contained “some payment information,” while a BlankMediaGames moderator said, “We don’t store any credit card or payment info.” That operator comment does not resolve what Check Point meant by payment information, and the available reporting does not establish that full credit-card numbers were exposed. It would be inaccurate to state either that card numbers were confirmed stolen or that all payment-related data exposure was ruled out.

What did BlankMediaGames say it would do?
In a 3 January 2019 Steam update, BlankMediaGames said it was working to fix vulnerabilities and looking into hiring a security firm to check the work. The update also said the company had emailed users about the breach and that those notifications were legitimate. The Steam archive records extended maintenance intended to improve server security.
What should former or current account holders do?
- Change any reused password. If the password used for Town of Salem was also used elsewhere, replace it on every other affected service with a distinct password. Do not reuse the old password.
- Secure accounts that use the same email address. Use a unique password for your email account and any other important accounts, since access to email can enable password resets elsewhere.
- Enable stronger sign-in protection where available. Turn on multifactor authentication for accounts that offer it, especially email and financial accounts.
- Be alert to suspicious messages. The breach included email addresses and other account details, which can make unsolicited messages seem credible. Treat unexpected links, attachments and requests for credentials cautiously.
These are practical precautions based on the reported exposure of hashed passwords and account information; they are not later requirements announced by BlankMediaGames. The available material does not establish subsequent legal, regulatory, compensation or current-service outcomes.
