To tame a friendly animal in Hytale, hold its favorite food in your hand and approach it. Update 3 introduced this as an early feature for some friendly animals—not every creature—and says a tamed animal will stop fleeing unless it is hit. “Luring” is less clearly defined: the official notes describe the taming rule, while a dated gameplay guide reports that preferred food can attract animals and that an interaction reveals what they want.
How to tame an animal
- Find a friendly animal. Update 3 says only “some of the friendlier animals” can be tamed, so do not assume hostile creatures or all wildlife are eligible. Hytale’s Update 3 notes describe the system as an early version.
- Hold its preferred food. The official rule is to have the animal’s favorite food in hand. A March 2026 GameSpot guide reports that approaching a passive animal may show a “tame” interaction; using it displays an image of the food it wants. Treat that label and interface as version-dependent, not a guaranteed current control.
- Feed or interact at close range. GameSpot reports that hearts indicate a successful tame. Its examples are useful starting points, but the list is secondary and may be incomplete or superseded.
Reported favorite foods
The following pairings were reported by GameSpot on March 19, 2026. Hytale’s official notes do not publish an exhaustive animal-and-food database, so verify the preference in your current game rather than treating this as a definitive list.

Does holding food lure animals?
Preferred food can help draw an animal’s attention, according to GameSpot’s guide, but the official Update 3 notes do not define a separate general-purpose luring or herding mechanic. The reliably documented use of food is to meet the favorite-food requirement for taming. If an animal follows food in your current version, regard that as version-specific behavior rather than a universal official rule.

What happens after taming?
Hytale’s official notes say tamed animals stop fleeing unless hit. You can pet them with an empty hand and feed them occasionally. Some animals may also be milked, sheared, or mounted; those actions are species-dependent, not available for every tame.
Why guides and behavior may change
Update 3, published February 17, 2026, described taming as an early version. In a July 2026 development update, Hytale said it was still maturing livestock and pet designs and had begun work on behaviors such as following players, stalking prey, sleeping near campfires, and playing with owners. The team described expanding taming and homesteading as a short-term goal; those development plans should not be read as confirmation that every behavior is already in the game. Vanilla taming versus mods
The favorite-food method is the vanilla system described in the official notes. Optional mods can add separate care and management mechanics. For example, the CurseForge listing for Alec’s Animal Husbandry describes needs, happiness, traits, growth, commands, and progression, while saying neutral livestock and wildlife use the base-game favorite-food method. Those added systems are mod features, not vanilla Hytale mechanics. Check that a guide or mod applies to your game version and whether it assumes modded play.
