To pick a lock in Kingdom Come: Deliverance II, move the pick cursor until it enlarges and turns gold, then rotate the lock while guiding the cursor to keep it in that moving sweet spot. Use the control prompt shown in the lockpicking interface for the exact input on your platform and control preset.
How to pick a lock
-
Approach a locked door or container and check its displayed difficulty before starting. If Henry is not able to attempt it, or the lock is beyond your current ability, leave it for later.

Hold the rotation control shown on screen. As the lock turns, move the cursor to follow the sweet spot. You must rotate and track it at the same time.

Make small adjustments and watch the gold feedback. If you lose the spot, release the control and reset rather than forcing the attempt. A failed attempt can break a pick and make noise that attracts nearby NPCs.
Controls on mouse, keyboard, and controller
On mouse and keyboard, move the mouse to position the pick and press the rotation key shown by the interface. On controller, use the stick to track the sweet spot and the displayed shoulder or trigger control to turn the lock. Shacknews describes mouse movement with the D key or a thumbstick, but labels can vary with platform and control preset, so follow the active prompt rather than treating a particular button as universal. Lock difficulty is displayed as Very Easy, Easy, Medium, Hard, or Very Hard. Higher difficulty makes the sweet spot harder to maintain; Henry’s Thievery skill and relevant perks or effects can improve your chances and handling. Treat the displayed difficulty and Henry’s current skill as your readiness check instead of relying on a fixed rotation distance: the sweet spot’s behavior can vary by lock.

Where to practice
Guides identify Miller Kreyzl’s repeatable training chest at Lower Semine as a practice option. Use it, or another manageable low-risk lock, to learn how the cursor responds while the lock turns before attempting a consequential lock. KCD2.org’s lockpicking guide
Getting lockpicks and managing failures
You need a lockpick to begin. Guides report several possible sources, including merchants, exploration, and early interactions with Bara after the prologue; which options are available can depend on your progress. For routes and merchant categories, see PC Gamer’s guide to getting lockpicks and GameSpot’s guide.
Carry spare picks when you can. If the cursor slips out of the gold spot or the attempt feels difficult to control, stop and reset; repeatedly forcing a bad attempt risks breaking picks and making noise. Practice on a permitted, low-difficulty lock rather than spending supplies on a lock beyond Henry’s current ability.
Quick Recap
Pick your practice approach
| Approach | Best for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Mouse and keyboard | Players who prefer precise mouse movement and keyboard input. | Use the rotation key shown in your interface; the prompt may vary by setup. |
| Controller | Players who prefer tracking the spot with a stick. | Follow the displayed shoulder or trigger prompt; no source establishes one input method as objectively better. |
| Training chest or manageable lock | Learning the simultaneous turn-and-track movement. | Practice before attempting a consequential lock; difficulty and risk depend on the lock and Henry’s skill. |
| Harder lock | After building Thievery and becoming comfortable with the mechanic. | The sweet spot is harder to maintain, and a failed attempt may cost a pick and draw attention. |
