How to Make a Better MC BMC2 Server for Minecraft 1.20.1

Use the BMC2 [FABRIC] 1.20.1 Server Pack, 64-bit Java 17, and a machine that can dedicate at least 6GB of RAM to the server. Allocate 8–10GB when five or more players will be online, keep the files on an SSD, and make every client use the identical BMC2 version and mod set. The reliable setup is: download the full Server Pack (not the small CurseForge launcher manifest), extract it, run the included startup script once, accept the EULA, configure server.properties, then start it again. For friends outside your home, forward TCP port 25565 and allow Java through the firewall.

What Better MC BMC2 is—and which server files you need

Better MC [FABRIC] BMC2 is LunaPixelStudios’ Fabric modpack for Minecraft 1.20.1. The project lists more than 280 mods, over 100 quests, revamped world generation, shader support, new bosses and mobs, hundreds of dungeons and structures, Waystones, XP Storage and Xaero’s Minimap. CurseForge recorded 2,155,924 downloads when this guide was researched, and listed an update on January 25, 2026. The release identified there is BMC2 [FABRIC] 1.20.1 v40, with a separate BMC2 Server Pack v40. Version numbers can change, so select the current matching release when you install.

BMC2 uses Fabric, not Forge. A Forge server or a different Better MC edition will not load this pack correctly. CurseForge also displays the notice: “NOT AN OFFICIAL MINECRAFT PRODUCT. NOT APPROVED BY OR ASSOCIATED WITH MOJANG OR MICROSOFT”.

For a manual server, download the complete Server Pack from the project’s Files area. The approximately 50MB launcher manifest is intended for the CurseForge app; it is not the bundle you extract for a standalone server. Using that manifest as though it were the server pack is a common reason for missing files and failed starts.

Choose where the server will run

Your choice affects availability, network work and how much troubleshooting you do. Decide before installing because the same pack can be moved later, but the surrounding setup will not be the same.

Option Upfront and recurring cost Availability Technical effort Control and resources Network work Keeping clients synchronized
Managed game host Usually a recurring monthly charge; current plans and terms vary and must be checked before ordering. Designed to stay online without your personal computer running. Lowest effort when the panel provides one-click Fabric or Better MC installation. Provider controls the hardware; you still manage world, configuration and mod files through its panel or file access. Choose at least 6GB RAM for BMC2. No home-router port forwarding; the host supplies a public address. You still need to use the provider’s firewall or networking controls if offered. Simple if the panel installs the exact BMC2 release; verify the version and server-pack revision before inviting players.
Self-hosted computer or rented virtual machine No game-host subscription when using hardware you already own, but electricity or a separate machine can add cost. Online only while the machine and server process are running. Highest: Java installation, port forwarding, firewall rules, backups, updates and crash diagnosis are your responsibility. Full access to files, scripts, mods and world data. Plan for 6GB minimum, 8–10GB for five or more players, four CPU cores minimum (six or more recommended), and at least 15GB free storage. Home hosting normally needs TCP 25565 forwarded and permitted through the firewall. A stable upload connection matters. You control the files, so you can lock the server and clients to one exact pack version and distribute any approved changes.
LAN No hosting bill beyond the computers and network you already have. Available only while the host is playing and the world is open on the same network. Lowest networking effort for people in one home or local network. The host computer still needs the same Java, RAM, CPU and storage guidance as a self-hosted server. No public port forwarding for same-network players; internet friends cannot join through LAN alone. Everyone still needs the same BMC2 release and mod list, even on a local network.

LunaPixelStudios’ hosting guidance identifies BisectHosting as its official hosting partner and describes one-click Better MC installation there. Apex Hosting, Shockbyte and Nodecraft are alternatives only if their current offerings support Fabric and the required memory. Hosting prices, available plans and affiliate terms change, so verify those details directly before paying.

Check the hardware and software requirements

Memory

Allocate at least 6GB of RAM to the BMC2 server. For five or more simultaneous players, use 8–10GB when the machine has enough memory. Do not assign every gigabyte on the host to Java: the operating system, storage cache, desktop, monitoring tools and other services need headroom. A machine with 16GB total RAM is a practical starting point for a small group, provided the operating system and other applications are not consuming most of it.

Processor

The guide’s baseline is four CPU cores, with six or more recommended. Modded world generation and chunk loading can create short CPU spikes, so a newer multicore processor is preferable to an older chip with the same core count.

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

Storage

Reserve at least 15GB of free space for the server, world and mod files. An SSD is recommended: it reduces the time needed to read region files and helps the server handle chunk-generation bursts. Leave additional space for backups rather than filling the drive to its limit.

Java and operating system

Install a 64-bit Java 17 runtime. A 32-bit runtime cannot provide a sensible heap for this pack. After installation, open a terminal or Command Prompt and run:

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
java -version

Confirm that the reported major version is 17 and that the runtime is 64-bit. If the command is not found, install Java 17 or correct the system PATH before trying to start BMC2.

Network

Self-hosting requires a stable connection, particularly upload capacity when several players explore at once. A managed host removes the home-router portion of the job, while LAN play avoids public internet exposure but is limited to the local network.

Install the BMC2 1.20.1 server pack

  1. Select the matching Fabric release. In the BMC2 project’s CurseForge Files area, choose the BMC2 [FABRIC] 1.20.1 release you intend to play and download its corresponding BMC2 Server Pack. Do not substitute the small launcher manifest.
  2. Create a dedicated folder. Make a new folder such as BMC2-Server on the SSD. Keeping the server separate from downloads and other Minecraft instances makes backups and updates safer.
  3. Extract every server-pack file. Unzip the complete archive directly into that folder. The startup scripts and configuration files should be visible there; do not leave them buried inside a second, identically named folder created by the archive utility.
  4. Install and verify Java 17. Use the java -version check above before launching. If multiple Java versions are installed, make sure the script resolves to Java 17 rather than an older or newer runtime.
  5. Run the supplied startup script once. On Windows, run startserver.bat. On Linux or macOS, run the included startserver.sh from the server folder. The first run commonly stops during setup; that is expected while required files and the initial world configuration are created.
  6. Accept the Minecraft EULA. Open the newly created eula.txt, change eula=false to eula=true, save the file and close the editor. The server will not continue until this agreement is present.
  7. Edit the basic server settings. Open server.properties. Set max-players to the number your hardware can support, choose the desired difficulty, and leave server-port=25565 unless another service already uses that port. If players experience chunk-loading strain, set view-distance to about 8–10.
  8. Set the Java heap in the startup script. Open the supplied Windows or shell script and find its existing memory options, usually the values following -Xms and -Xmx. Set the maximum allocation to 6G as a starting minimum, or 8G–10G for five or more players, while keeping several gigabytes available to the operating system. Preserve the rest of the pack’s arguments.
  9. Start the server again. Run the same script after saving the EULA, properties and memory changes. Leave the console open until it reports that the server has completed startup. Closing the window terminates a self-hosted server.
  10. Connect locally first. From a client on the same machine use localhost:25565; from another device on the same LAN use the host computer’s local IP and port. Test locally before changing router settings, because it separates installation problems from internet networking problems.

Configure access for friends outside your network

Forward the game port

For a self-hosted internet server, create a router port-forwarding rule for TCP 25565 to the host computer’s local IP address. If you changed server-port, forward that chosen port instead. Give the host a stable local address so the rule does not break when the router renews DHCP leases.

Allow Java through the firewall

When the operating system asks whether Java may communicate on the network, allow it for the network profile you actually use. If a firewall rule was previously denied, add or edit a rule for the Java runtime and the server port. Test from outside your home network; a local test alone cannot prove that forwarding works.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Managed hosting and LAN differences

A managed provider normally supplies the public address and avoids home-router forwarding, but you still need to copy that address and port to players. LAN play needs no public exposure for same-network players and cannot accept internet friends through the LAN menu alone.

Make every player match the server exactly

Install the same BMC2 release on every client that the server runs. For the release researched here, that means the same Minecraft 1.20.1 Fabric pack and matching server-pack revision, such as v40 when that is the version you selected. A minor version mismatch can block a connection even when the Minecraft version appears correct.

  • Do not remove a server mod from only one side. Restore the original pack or make the same deliberate change everywhere.
  • When a host updates BMC2, stop the server, back up the world and distribute the matching client update before players reconnect.
  • Keep configuration files coordinated when a mod requires a shared setting. A clean, unmodified pack is the easiest baseline for diagnosing connection errors.

Reduce lag without guessing

BMC2 has no single setting that fixes every delay. Distinguish server simulation delay from client rendering and from temporary world generation, then change one factor at a time. The available guidance does not provide controlled FPS or TPS percentages, so treat these as practical mitigations rather than guaranteed numerical improvements.

When new terrain causes a stall

Players may see a temporary pause when first entering a new dimension or unexplored region because chunks must be generated and saved. If the pause occurs mainly during exploration, use the Chunky mod to pre-generate chunks before the group plays there. Run pre-generation while no one is relying on the live world, watch free disk space, and keep a backup first.

When everyone feels delayed

  1. Check the server console and operating-system memory usage. If Java is close to its maximum heap and the host is swapping, stop other applications and ensure the machine has enough physical RAM; do not simply give Java all available memory.
  2. Lower the server’s view-distance to approximately 8–10. This reduces the amount of terrain the server must keep active around players.
  3. Lower each client’s render distance as well. Client rendering and server simulation are separate workloads, so changing only one side may leave the other overloaded.
  4. Temporarily reduce or disable shaders. Shaders primarily burden clients, but disabling them is a useful troubleshooting split: if the delay disappears for one player, investigate that client’s graphics load rather than the server.
  5. Confirm that the world and server files are on an SSD and that the drive has at least the required free space plus room for backups.

When only one player lags

Compare that player’s render distance and shader settings with the others, then check the route to the server. A single affected client does not by itself prove that the server needs more RAM. Have the player test with shaders disabled and a lower render distance before changing the server heap.

When lag appears after adding mods

Return to the untouched BMC2 pack and verify that every client and the server use the same files. Add custom mods in small groups, restarting and testing after each change. If the problem returns, remove the last group and consult that mod’s compatibility information rather than masking the issue with a larger heap.

Troubleshoot startup and connection failures

The script closes immediately

  • Run java -version in the same environment and verify 64-bit Java 17.
  • Start the script from the extracted server folder so relative paths resolve correctly.
  • Read the console or log before closing it; missing files, permissions and Java-path errors require different fixes.
  • Confirm that the full Server Pack was extracted, not the approximately 50MB CurseForge launcher manifest.

The server says the EULA is not accepted

Stop the process, open eula.txt in the server folder and change only the value to eula=true. Save it as plain text, then run the startup script again. If the file keeps reverting, check that the folder is writable and that you edited the copy the script is actually using.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A client reports incompatible mods or a failed handshake

Compare the complete BMC2 release, Minecraft 1.20.1, Fabric loader and mod files on both sides. Reinstall the exact client pack that matches the server pack instead of copying individual jars at random. Any custom addition or removal must be made consistently for all players and the server.

Players outside the house cannot connect

Verify the server is running, the forwarded port matches server-port, the forwarding target is the host’s current local IP, and Java is allowed through the firewall. Test from a genuinely external network. Same-LAN success proves that the server process works but does not prove that the router is forwarding internet traffic.

The world becomes unstable after an update

Stop the server and restore the most recent backup before experimenting further. Keep backups of the world and the server folder, including configuration and mod files, before changing the BMC2 version. Never overwrite the only copy of a working world with an untested update.

Backups, updates and routine operation

Back up the files that matter

Make a copy of the world directory and the surrounding server files before updating, changing mods or running large pre-generation jobs. Store at least one copy away from the live server machine. A backup is useful only if you can identify which BMC2 version and configuration created it, so label copies with the date and release.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Update in a controlled order

  1. Tell players the server will be offline and stop it cleanly from the console.
  2. Copy the world and current server folder to a backup location.
  3. Download the new BMC2 client release and its matching Server Pack.
  4. Read the pack’s included instructions, replace or update the server files as directed, and preserve the backed-up world.
  5. Start the server once with no players connected. Watch the console for errors and confirm that the world loads.
  6. Distribute the identical client release before reopening the server to the group.

Monitor headroom

Watch Java memory use, CPU load, free SSD space and the server console during busy sessions. If the machine has no memory left for the operating system, increasing the Java maximum can make stability worse. If exploration repeatedly causes long stalls, combine the SSD, view-distance and pre-generation measures rather than relying on one setting.

A practical starting configuration

Setting Starting value When to change it
Pack BMC2 [FABRIC] for Minecraft 1.20.1, matching current Server Pack revision Change only when every client can move to the same release.
Java 64-bit Java 17 Fix the installation or PATH if the version check fails.
Server RAM 6GB minimum Use 8–10GB for five or more players if the host has sufficient physical memory.
CPU Four cores minimum; six or more recommended Choose more headroom when several players explore different areas.
Storage 15GB free minimum on an SSD when possible Free more space before updates, backups or pre-generation.
Port 25565/TCP Change only when another service needs the port, then update forwarding and the client address.
Server view distance About 8–10 when the server struggles Lower it during diagnosis; raise it only after the server remains responsive.

Which setup is right for your group?

Choose managed hosting when the world must remain online and nobody wants to administer Java, routers, firewalls and backups. Choose self-hosting when file-level control and avoiding a recurring hosting bill matter more than convenience, and you can keep the machine online. Choose LAN when everyone plays on the same network and the host being present is acceptable. Whichever route you select, the non-negotiables are the same: Fabric BMC2 for Minecraft 1.20.1, the matching Server Pack, Java 17, at least 6GB allocated RAM, and identical client and server files.
