First identify which save you have. If it is a world that was created through RimWorld Together while you played alone, a host’s transfer procedure may apply. If it is an ordinary RimWorld single-player save, the documented transfer method does not support it. Shockbyte’s guide, dated March 11, 2026, states: “Only saves from an existing RimWorld Together server can be transferred. Standard single player RimWorld saves are not compatible.” See the Shockbyte transfer guide for that compatibility statement.
The steps below therefore separate the two cases. Do not copy a normal RimWorld save into a server folder and assume it has been converted into a multiplayer world. For a supported RimWorld Together world, back it up, stop the destination server, match its mods, and follow the file and folder instructions for your particular host.

Can a normal RimWorld single-player save be uploaded?
Not by the transfer process documented in the available host guides. A standard RimWorld single-player save and an existing RimWorld Together server world are different cases. The Shockbyte guide explicitly excludes standard single-player saves and describes transferring files from an already running RimWorld Together installation.

That means a file from the normal RimWorld desktop save location is not, by itself, an importable multiplayer world. The current documentation used here does not establish an official conversion or importer for ordinary single-player saves. If that is the save you have, ask the RimWorld Together maintainers whether a current, supported importer exists before changing server files. Treat any unverified file-copy workaround as experimental rather than as a supported migration.
Two situations to distinguish
| What you have | What the cited documentation establishes | Correct next step |
|---|---|---|
| An ordinary RimWorld single-player save | The Shockbyte procedure says it is not compatible; no verified conversion path is established here. | Do not upload it as though it were a multiplayer save. Check with the RimWorld Together maintainers for a current supported method. |
| A world created and used through RimWorld Together, even if you played it alone | Host guides document transferring the existing server world, with host-specific file paths and upload methods. | Back up the destination, stop it, verify mods, then use the instructions for your host. |
What “singleplayer” can mean in RimWorld Together
RimWorld Together can leave players with a world that feels like single-player because they were the only person connected. That does not make it an ordinary RimWorld save. The relevant question is how the world was created and stored: through the RimWorld Together server software, or through the standard RimWorld client.
The RimWorld Together server-creation documentation says that the first player who joins a new server sets up its world. It also recommends generating that world with the mods you plan to use. This describes creating a new multiplayer-server world, not importing a normal local colony after the fact.
Quick identification checklist
- You launched or joined a RimWorld Together server and created the world after connecting: treat it as an existing RimWorld Together world.
- You started the game through the ordinary RimWorld single-player flow and saved a colony locally: treat it as a standard single-player save, which the cited transfer procedure does not support.
- You are unsure: do not overwrite the server. Keep the original files and ask the project maintainers or your host to identify the save format first.
Back up and prepare before moving a supported world
File replacement is easiest to recover from when the original server data remains untouched. The RimWorld Together server-configuration documentation describes automatic backups, including a configured interval and a backup when the server launches. Those are project-level settings; a host may expose them through a different panel or provide its own backup controls.
- Make or verify a backup. Use your host’s backup feature or retain an untouched copy of the existing server files before uploading anything. Confirm where the backup can be restored.
- Record the current setup. Note the server’s RimWorld Together version, enabled mods, world name and any host-specific file path. This gives you a reference if the replacement starts with the wrong world.
- Stop the destination server. Shockbyte and MintServers both instruct you to stop the server before replacing or uploading save data. Do not upload into files that the server is actively writing.
- Check mod compatibility. Compare the source world’s mod set with the destination. The official wiki recommends creating a world with the intended mods, and ZAP-Hosting warns that moving a world between servers with different mods can cause gameplay problems.
- Keep the source copy until the destination is tested. Do not delete the original archive or folder immediately after upload. You may need it to restore the previous state.
Where is the save file?
For an ordinary Windows RimWorld installation, the RimWorld Wiki lists this standard location:
%USERPROFILE%AppDataLocalLowLudeon StudiosRimWorld by Ludeon StudiosSaves
In the game, open Settings → Save data location → Show to display the configured save location, as documented on the RimWorld Wiki save-file page. That path is the ordinary client’s context. It is not automatically the location of a RimWorld Together server world.

Some host documentation instead refers to a server directory named rimworld-together/Saves. MintServers and ZAP-Hosting use that server-side context in their instructions. Do not send a normal local save to that folder and infer that the server has converted it; first establish that the save was created by RimWorld Together and then follow the host’s required data scope.
Host procedures for an existing RimWorld Together world
There is no universal upload recipe. The cited providers differ in whether they expect a complete server archive or only the save folder, whether you use a control-panel file manager or FTP, and whether the archive is extracted for you. Select the section matching your host; do not mix paths from one provider with archive instructions from another.
Shockbyte: transfer an archived server installation
Shockbyte’s guide is the source that states the single-player compatibility limitation. For a supported existing RimWorld Together world, its workflow is to archive the relevant server files locally, stop the destination server, upload the archive through the host panel, extract it, and start the server again.
- From the existing RimWorld Together installation, create the archive required by the guide. Preserve the server files as a group rather than selecting an arbitrary ordinary RimWorld save.
- In the Shockbyte control panel, stop the destination server.
- Upload the archive using the panel’s file-management workflow.
- Extract the uploaded archive in the destination location specified by the panel or guide.
- Check that the extracted files are in the expected server structure, then start the server.
- Join and verify the world before removing your source copy.
The guide’s file scope is broader than simply dropping one local save file into a Saves folder. Follow the current panel labels and directory shown by Shockbyte because host interfaces and project releases can change.

MintServers: upload an archive to the server’s Saves folder
The MintServers instructions, dated April 21, 2026, describe uploading an archive to the server’s Saves folder while the server is stopped.
- Back up the destination server and stop it from the MintServers panel.
- Prepare the archive containing the supported RimWorld Together save according to the provider’s instructions.
- Open the server file manager and navigate to its
Savesfolder. - Upload the archive there while the server remains stopped.
- Apply the extraction or replacement action required by the panel, if the archive is not unpacked automatically.
- Start the server and verify that the intended world appears.
Do not substitute the Windows client path for this server-side Saves directory. MintServers’ procedure concerns the hosted RimWorld Together data location.
ZAP-Hosting: upload the save folder through FTP
ZAP-Hosting documents a different workflow: upload the save folder through FTP into rimworld-together/Saves. Its guide also warns that a world moved between servers with different mods may experience gameplay issues.

- Stop the destination server before changing its files and keep a backup of the existing data.
- Connect to the server with the FTP credentials supplied by ZAP-Hosting.
- Open the
rimworld-together/Savesdirectory. - Upload the supported RimWorld Together save folder into that location, preserving the folder and file names.
- Wait for the transfer to finish completely, then check that the folder is inside the intended
Savesdirectory rather than beside it. - Start the server and test the world with the matching mod set.
This is a folder upload, not automatically the same operation as uploading and extracting a complete server archive. Use the current ZAP-Hosting FTP path and permissions shown in its save-game guide.
Mod compatibility is part of the transfer
A save can exist in the correct directory and still fail to behave correctly when the destination server has a different mod setup. The RimWorld Together wiki recommends generating a world with the mods intended for that server. ZAP-Hosting specifically cautions that moving worlds between servers with different mods may cause gameplay issues.
Compare before starting
- Match the enabled-mod list, not just the number of mods.
- Check that the destination has the same required content and compatible versions.
- Do not add or remove mods casually between the final backup and the first test launch.
- If the host’s project version or mod loader differs, ask the host or RimWorld Together maintainers whether the world is supported before proceeding.
If you intentionally want a different mod set, make a separate backup and test copy first. A successful upload only proves that files arrived; it does not prove that the world is safe to run with changed dependencies.

The server starts a new world
Stop the server and check the destination path and file scope against your host’s guide. A normal local RimWorld save may be sitting in the Windows Saves directory while the server is looking under its own RimWorld Together data tree. On archive-based hosts, confirm that the archive was extracted into the server’s expected root rather than into an extra nested folder.
The save does not appear in the server list
Confirm that you transferred an existing RimWorld Together world, not a standard single-player save. Then verify that the host’s required archive or folder is in the exact destination directory and that the upload completed while the server was stopped. If the path is correct and the format is supported, provide the host with the backup and the exact directory listing rather than repeatedly overwriting files.
The world loads with errors or missing content
Compare the source and destination mod sets and versions. ZAP-Hosting’s warning about differing mods applies even when the file transfer itself succeeds. Restore the backup if necessary, then ask the host or project maintainers which mod combination is supported for that world.
The archive cannot be used
Do not assume that an archive prepared for one provider is valid for another. Shockbyte describes extracting an archived server transfer, MintServers describes an archive in its Saves folder, and ZAP-Hosting describes an FTP folder upload. Their data scopes and archive treatment are different. Re-read the instructions for the destination host before repacking or moving anything.

You cannot tell whether a save is multiplayer-compatible
Preserve the original files, do not launch the destination with an unverified replacement, and ask the RimWorld Together maintainers to identify the save type. The available guides do not establish a general-purpose converter for ordinary single-player saves.
If you only have an ordinary single-player colony
The safest answer is that the cited transfer method cannot be used as a conversion. Keep playing from the original local save or create a new RimWorld Together world through the project’s server workflow. The official Creating a Server documentation explains that the first player joining a new server sets up its world and recommends preparing it with the intended mods.
Before trying unofficial manipulation, ask the maintainers whether a current importer exists for your RimWorld and RimWorld Together versions. A provider’s ability to upload files does not establish that it can translate the data model of a standard single-player save.
What the project documentation does—and does not—promise
The RimWorld Together project publishes server documentation and a GitHub repository that also describes container deployment. The repository characterizes hardware demands as not heavy and calls out network bandwidth, but it does not provide a quantified minimum connection speed or a universal hardware specification. Do not use an invented speed, file-size limit or benchmark to decide whether a transfer will work.
Provider steps and project releases can change. The Shockbyte guide is dated March 11, 2026, and the MintServers guide is dated April 21, 2026; the official wiki and repository pages used here did not show publication dates. Recheck the current host panel and project documentation immediately before an upload, especially when the server software has been updated.
A safe decision path
- Classify the save. Ordinary RimWorld single-player means no verified import path in the cited documentation; a world created through RimWorld Together may be transferable.
- Identify the host. Find whether it expects a complete archive, an archive in
Saves, or an FTP folder inrimworld-together/Saves. - Back up first. Use the host’s controls and, where configured, RimWorld Together’s automatic backup settings.
- Stop the destination. Complete this before replacing or uploading server data.
- Match mods. Resolve differences before launch.
- Transfer only the documented data. Do not combine instructions from different hosts.
- Start and test. Confirm the intended world, map, colonists and mod-dependent content before deleting the source copy.
The Bottom Line
A standard RimWorld single-player save is not established as transferable to RimWorld Together by the documented method. An existing RimWorld Together world can be moved when your host supports it: back up first, stop the server, match the mods, and use that host’s exact archive, folder and FTP instructions.
