To craft a crossbow in Minecraft, gather 3 sticks, 2 strings, 1 iron ingot, and 1 tripwire hook, then place them in a crafting table. The usual recipe layout is shown below. Minecraft’s official guide confirms the ingredients but does not show the grid positions in its accessible text, so check your in-game recipe book if this arrangement does not work in your edition or version.

The ingredients are sticks, string, iron, and a tripwire hook, as listed in Minecraft’s official crossbow guide. If the grid does not produce a crossbow, open the in-game recipe book and follow the pattern it displays for your edition and version; the official article confirms the ingredients, not the grid arrangement.
What you need
- 3 sticks
- 2 strings
- 1 iron ingot
- 1 tripwire hook
How to load and fire a crossbow
- Hold the crossbow and use the load action. The controls depend on your platform; Minecraft’s guide describes loading as taking a little over a second.
- Once loaded, use the crossbow again to fire. You can put a loaded crossbow away and use it later.
The official guide describes crossbows as slower to load than bows, but farther-reaching and more accurate. It also says they can fire firework rockets. Its reported average damage is nine points (four and a half hearts) when a shot hits; treat that as the guide’s general description, not a guaranteed result against every target or in every version.

Other ways to get a crossbow
If you do not want to craft one, Minecraft’s official guide also identifies these possible sources:
- Pillagers or piglins may carry crossbows.
- Chests at pillager outposts and bastion remnants may contain one.
- Village fletchers may sometimes sell one.
The guide does not give drop odds or prices, so these are alternatives rather than routes that can be ranked reliably by cost or time.

Repairing and enchanting a crossbow
Minecraft’s official guide says a crossbow can be repaired with an anvil or grindstone and enchanted. Bedrock’s creator documentation lists these crossbow enchantments:
- Quick Charge: reduces charging time.
- Multishot: fires three arrows per shot.
- Piercing: lets arrows pass through entities.
- Unbreaking: also applies to crossbows.
These enchantments are optional improvements; none is needed to craft or use a basic crossbow. The enchantment details are from Microsoft Learn’s Bedrock stable enchantment documentation, last updated January 30, 2025. The official Minecraft crossbow article was published October 20, 2022 and does not specify a Java or Bedrock version, so use the in-game recipe book for version-specific guidance.
