You can make a DayZ server without renting a managed game server. Install the official dedicated-server files on Windows or Linux, create a configuration file, launch it with the correct executable and ports, and verify that players can connect. Add mods only after the vanilla server works and its persistent data is backed up.
What you need to make a DayZ server
The quickest reliable method is to run the official DayZ Dedicated Server files on a Windows or Linux machine, create a small configuration file, launch the server, and test it before installing mods. A managed host is optional—not a requirement.

Before starting, prepare:
- DayZ for PC for the people who will play. The dedicated-server files are distributed separately through Steam’s Tools library or the current Bohemia Interactive server-management workflow; buying the game from a particular marketplace is not the only way to obtain the server tool.
- A supported Windows or Linux machine with administrator access. The published baseline is a dual-core CPU, 6 GB of RAM, and approximately 2.5 GB of storage. An SSD is preferable for the installation, logs, and persistent storage.
- Permission to configure the host firewall and, if necessary, the router’s port forwarding.
- A strong, unique administrator password. Do not use the examples in this guide as real credentials.
- Enough capacity for your intended player count and mods. The baseline requirements are minimum figures, not a guarantee that a heavily modded or high-population server will perform well.
Self-hosting or managed DayZ server hosting?
Self-hosting is the least expensive route if you already have a suitable machine and can configure networking. You control the files, updates, logs, backups, and mods, but you are also responsible for firewall rules, uptime, restarts, security, and troubleshooting.
A rented DayZ server hosting plan, VPS, or dedicated server can be more convenient for a persistent community. Compare the actual CPU allocation, RAM, SSD storage, server location, backup tools, DDoS protection, mod-management workflow, access to logs, and support for the current stable DayZ branch. Do not assume every provider supports the same mods or gives you full file access.
#1 Best Overall
- New
- Mint Condition
- Dispatch same day for order received before 12 noon
- Guaranteed packaging
- No quibbles returns
For a first server, either option works. Use self-hosting when you want control and are comfortable administering Windows or Linux. Choose managed hosting when continuous uptime and simpler administration are more important than having complete control over the underlying machine.
Windows: quick DayZ server setup
1. Install the official server files
In Steam, open the Tools section of your Library and look for the DayZ server tool. Bohemia Interactive has also documented a PowerShell-based server-management workflow for downloading, updating, and starting server files. The exact Steam labels and available workflow can change, so confirm that you have installed the current stable server branch rather than an experimental build.
Install the server into a simple directory such as C:DayZServer. Avoid placing a server that you will administer frequently inside a deeply nested personal-library path. The final directory should contain the server executable and its supporting files.
2. Create a configuration file
Find the supplied configuration file in the server directory and make a backup before editing it. The file does not have to be named serverDZ.cfg; the name is selected by the -config launch parameter. Keeping the familiar name is convenient, but any valid filename will work if the launch command matches it.
A small vanilla configuration can look like this:
hostname = "My DayZ Server";
description = "A private vanilla server";
password = "";
passwordAdmin = "REPLACE_WITH_A_STRONG_ADMIN_PASSWORD";
maxPlayers = 10;
verifySignatures = 2;
forceSameBuild = 1;
disableVoN = 0;
vonCodecQuality = 20;
disable3rdPerson = 0;
disableCrosshair = 0;
serverTime = "SystemTime";
serverTimeAcceleration = 1;
serverNightTimeAcceleration = 1;
loginQueueConcurrentPlayers = 5
instanceId = 1;
storeHouseStateDisabled = 0;
storageAutoFix = 1;
class Missions
{
class DayZ
{
template = "dayzOffline.chernarusplus";
};
};
This is a starting point, not a complete explanation of every available setting. Keep most defaults until the server works. A private server can use a connection password; a public server normally leaves that field empty and protects administration with the separate admin password.
The mission template selects the world and mission data. Use dayzOffline.chernarusplus for Chernarus or dayzOffline.enoch for Livonia, provided the corresponding mission content exists in the installed build. A mismatched or misspelled template can prevent startup.
3. Create a Windows launch file
Save a file such as start-dayz.bat in the server directory:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesRank #2
@echo off
cd /d "C:DayZServer"
DayZServer_x64.exe -config=serverDZ.cfg -port=2302 -profiles=profiles -BEpath=battleye -dologs -adminlog -netlog -freezecheck
pause
Change the directory, executable name, configuration filename, and port to match the files on your machine. The example uses 2302 only as a representative game port; it is not universal for every deployment. The important requirement is that the launch command, firewall, router, and connection test all use one consistent port plan.
The launch options shown enable profiles and useful logs, identify the BattlEye directory, and turn on diagnostic logging. Other supported options cover CPU allocation, Workshop mods, server-side mods, and storage locations. Add those only when you have a specific reason.
4. Start and verify the server
Double-click the batch file or run it from a command prompt. Wait for initialization to finish, then check the console and the profile/RPT logs for errors. A process that remains open is not proof that players can connect.
- Test from the same machine or local network first.
- Test from a different machine on the LAN.
- For an internet server, test from a different network, such as a phone hotspot. Testing only from inside your home network can hide router or NAT problems.
If the server is not visible in the browser, try joining by the appropriate direct-connect method, check the server name and filters, and verify the query-port configuration. Public listing is not guaranteed immediately after the process starts.

1. Use a dedicated non-root account
Create a separate user for the server and do not run the DayZ server as root. This limits the damage a compromised game process or incorrectly installed file could cause. Install the SteamCMD dependencies required by your Linux distribution, then keep SteamCMD and the server in separate directories.
A practical layout is:
~/servers/steamcmd/
~/servers/dayz-server/
2. Install or update the stable server with SteamCMD
The current official Linux reference documents stable app ID 223350 and an experimental branch app ID 1042420. App IDs and branch procedures are version-sensitive, so re-check the current Bohemia Interactive documentation before automating updates.
A command shaped like this installs the stable branch:
Rank #3
~/servers/steamcmd/steamcmd.sh
+force_install_dir ~/servers/dayz-server/
+login your_login
+app_update 223350
+quit
Replace your_login with the account and authentication method required by your current SteamCMD setup. Never publish a password in a shell script, commit credentials to a repository, or place reusable credentials in a guide copied by other administrators.

3. Configure and launch the server
Put serverDZ.cfg in the server directory, or use another filename and reference it correctly. A representative launch command is:
cd ~/servers/dayz-server/
./DayZServer -config=serverDZ.cfg -port=2301
-BEpath=battleye -profiles=profiles
-dologs -adminlog -netlog -freezecheck
The official Linux example uses 2301, while the Windows example above uses 2302. Neither number should be treated as a universal DayZ port. Choose a plan for your host, open the required ports, and use the same values when testing.
For a community server that should run continuously, use a service manager or daemon with controlled restarts. Schedule updates during a maintenance window, stop the server gracefully, back up its state, and test the updated build before inviting players back.
What the serverDZ.cfg settings control
The configuration file is the server’s main control center. The most useful groups of settings are:
| Setting group | What it controls | Beginner advice |
|---|---|---|
| Identity | hostname and description |
Use a clear name that tells players whether the server is vanilla, private, role-play, or modded. |
| Access | password, passwordAdmin, whitelist and ban/priority behavior |
Use a private connection password for testing and a unique administrator password. Do not reuse an account password. |
| Capacity | maxPlayers, login queues, ping thresholds and server-FPS warnings |
Set a player limit your hardware can actually support; the published minimum hardware does not promise a player count. |
| Security and compatibility | Signature verification, same-build enforcement and BattlEye options | Keep signature and build checks enabled unless you have a narrowly defined testing reason not to. |
| Gameplay | Third-person, crosshair, voice, damage and time settings | Change one group at a time and document the change for easier troubleshooting. |
| Persistence | Instance ID, storage behavior and storage auto-fix | Back up mission and storage data before changing persistence-related settings. |
| Logging and networking | RPT/profile logs, game/client ports, query port, visibility and logging options | Keep useful logs enabled while setting up and troubleshooting. |
Do not modify many performance and gameplay values at once. If the server becomes unstable, changing everything simultaneously makes it difficult to identify the cause.
Ports, firewalls, and connection testing
DayZ exposes configurable networking values for the game port, client port, and Steam query port. The exact arrangement depends on the installed build and your launch parameters. Do not blindly copy a generic port-forwarding list from another guide.

On the host:
- Allow the DayZ server executable through the operating-system firewall, or create rules for the selected UDP/TCP traffic as required by the current server documentation.
- Confirm that the server is listening on the expected interface and port.
- If the machine is behind a router, forward the selected external traffic to the host’s stable local IP address.
- Check whether another application already uses the selected ports.
Test in stages: local connection, another LAN machine, then an external network. If local connections work but external connections fail, concentrate on the router, host firewall, ISP restrictions, carrier-grade NAT, or the selected interface—not on the mission file.
Persistence, backups, and safe restarts
Your mission and storage data contain valuable server state, including the world’s persistent objects and player-related data. Before a server update, mod change, or major configuration experiment:
Recommended Free Tools
- Announce maintenance and stop the server gracefully.
- Wait for the process to exit completely.
- Copy the relevant mission/storage data to a separate backup location.
- Back up the configuration and mod list as well.
- Make the change, start the server, and inspect the logs.
- Keep the previous backup until players have confirmed that the server behaves normally.
Use a separate test instance or storage location for experiments. Do not delete storage as a routine fix. Deleting it can intentionally reset persistence and may permanently remove progress unless you have a verified backup.
Adding Workshop mods safely
Get a working vanilla server first. Mods add another layer of possible failures: incompatible versions, missing server-side files, missing signing keys, incorrect load order, and clients that do not have the required Workshop items.
- Stop the server and make a complete backup.
- Confirm that each mod supports the current stable branch by checking its current Workshop page or trusted author distribution.
- Download and install the server-side files using the method appropriate to the mod.
- Copy required signing keys into the server’s
keysdirectory. - Add the exact mod folders in the intended order. Launch lists commonly use a semicolon-separated
-modvalue. - Ensure every player has the same required mods and compatible versions.
- Start the server and inspect server and client logs before opening it to the whole community.
Do not invent mod IDs or assume that an older mod remains compatible. If a modded server stops accepting players, remove the newest addition temporarily and test again. This is safer than changing unrelated network and gameplay settings.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Built-in gameplay customization without Workshop mods
Some supported gameplay changes use DayZ’s built-in gameplay-settings route rather than a Workshop mod. Copy cfggameplay.json into the mission folder and enable it in the server configuration with:
enableCfgGameplayFile = 1;
Keep the JSON valid, change one setting at a time, and preserve a backup before editing. A malformed JSON file can prevent the server from loading correctly. This system is separate from the -mod list and should not be treated as a replacement for every mod’s functionality.

BattlEye and server administration
Keep BattlEye and signature/build verification enabled for a normal public server. BattlEye’s administration reference covers RCon administration, passwords, player management, and ban concepts; DayZ’s configuration and launch options determine how the server uses its BattlEye path and logs.
- Use a unique, strong RCon password and never reuse it elsewhere.
- Restrict RCon exposure with firewall rules rather than leaving unnecessary management access open to the internet.
- Keep moderation and server logs available for incident review.
- Give administrative access only to people who need it.
- Document bans, warnings, restarts, and configuration changes.
BattlEye and good administration reduce risk, but they do not guarantee that every exploit, cheat, abusive player, or moderation problem will be prevented.
Troubleshooting checklist
The server does not start
- Confirm that the launch command points to the actual executable installed by the current server build.
- Confirm that
-config=names a real file in the expected directory. - Check quotes, semicolons, paths, and permissions.
- Validate
cfggameplay.jsonif you enabled it. - Confirm that the mission template exists and matches the intended map.
- Read the RPT and profile logs instead of relying only on the console.
- Confirm that the server branch and client build are compatible.
The server starts but is not visible
- Wait for initialization to finish.
- Verify the selected game, client, and Steam query ports.
- Check host firewall and router rules.
- Confirm the server is bound to the expected network interface.
- Test locally and then from another network.
- Clear restrictive browser filters and search for the exact hostname.
Players cannot join because of mods
- Confirm that clients have every required Workshop item.
- Confirm the server has the correct folders and signing keys.
- Check mod order and versions.
- Remove the newest mod temporarily to isolate the failure.
- Read both server and client logs before changing ports or deleting storage.
Performance is poor
- Compare player count and mod load with the host’s CPU, RAM, and storage capacity.
- Check server-FPS warnings and relevant logs.
- Remember that the published minimum requirements are not a recommended specification for a large or heavily modded community.
- Test one change at a time and record the result.
If the Windows host itself shows driver problems, excessive background processes, or unexplained resource pressure, a narrowly scoped PC maintenance and diagnostics tool may help investigate the host machine. It is not a fix for an invalid DayZ configuration, incompatible mod, port-forwarding failure, or BattlEye ban.
For a Windows host with driver problems, Outbyte Driver Updater is an optional tool for investigating that narrow issue; it is not required for DayZ server setup.
A practical first-day checklist
- Install the current stable dedicated-server files.
- Create a backup of the default configuration.
- Set a hostname, admin password, player limit, mission template, and useful logs.
- Launch without mods.
- Verify local and external connectivity.
- Confirm that persistence saves after a graceful stop and restart.
- Schedule backups and maintenance.
- Add one mod at a time only after vanilla operation is reliable.
- Keep BattlEye, signature checks, and same-build enforcement enabled for normal public play.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to rent a DayZ server?
No. You can self-host the official DayZ Dedicated Server files on a supported Windows or Linux machine. Managed hosting is optional and mainly trades some control for convenience, uptime, and provider support.
How much RAM and storage does a DayZ server need?
The published baseline is a dual-core processor, 6 GB of RAM, and about 2.5 GB of storage, with an SSD recommended. These are baseline requirements, not a guaranteed specification for a particular player count or mod collection.
Which port does a DayZ server use?
The port is configurable and must match your launch command, firewall, router, and connection test. Example guides may use 2301 or 2302, but neither should be assumed to be universal.
Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchPC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Can I add mods immediately?
No. Start with a working vanilla server, then install and test one mod at a time. Players generally need the same required mods and compatible versions, while server-side files and signing keys may also be required.
Will deleting the storage folder fix a broken server?
Do not routinely delete storage. Stop the server gracefully, back up the mission and storage data, and use a separate test instance for experiments. Deleting storage should be an intentional reset only after confirming that a backup exists.
The Bottom Line
Start with a vanilla DayZ server on Windows or Linux, use one consistent port plan, and verify connectivity and persistence before adding mods. Back up the mission and storage data before every update or major change; most avoidable server disasters come from skipping those three steps.
