You can make a playable Friday Night Funkin’ mod without compiling the game. For a new project, start with the official FNF mod system: create a folder in the game’s mods directory, add metadata, replace or add a small piece of content, and test it in-game. Expand from an asset replacement to a song, character, stage, and finally HScript when data and assets are no longer enough.

The important qualification is that “FNF modding” is not one universal workflow. Folder layouts, chart formats, editors, scripting languages, and compatibility depend on whether you target the current official game, Codename Engine, Psych Engine, or a custom source build.

Choose the engine before making files

Pick the engine your mod will actually run on. Do not mix files from different tutorials merely because they use familiar folders such as images, songs, or data.

Target Best for Trade-offs
Official FNF mod system New projects targeting current official releases First-party compatibility and clean folder-based distribution; advanced behavior may require HScript.
Codename Engine Projects intentionally built around softcoding and its tools or APIs Separate engine ecosystem; experimental downloads may be unstable.
Psych Engine Existing Psych projects or tutorials specifically written for Psych Engine-specific formats and a large legacy tutorial ecosystem whose version may be old.
Source-code modification Features the mod loader and scripts cannot provide Requires programming, build tools, dependencies, maintenance, and custom-build distribution.

Beginner recommendation: use the official system unless you have a specific reason to target another engine. It avoids an initial source build and lets you distribute a mod without replacing the game executable. Use Codename Engine or Psych Engine deliberately, not because an old tutorial happens to be easier to find.

The official documentation is the authority for the current game’s supported structure. The metadata example discussed below reflects the official guide as observed on August 18, 2026; recheck it when the game updates.

What an FNF mod can change

There are four increasingly technical kinds of mod:

  • Asset replacement: replace an existing image, sound, song, or data file by placing a file at the path the game already loads.
  • Content addition: add a song, chart, character, stage, dialogue sequence, week, or other supported content.
  • Runtime scripting: use a script for behavior that cannot be represented by assets and data, such as a custom mechanic, cutscene logic, or dynamic stage effect.
  • Source-code modification: change the engine itself and compile a custom build.

The official folder-based system is designed around overrides and additions. A mod generally contains only the files it changes; when a mod does not provide a matching file, the base game can continue supplying it. That makes a small reskin easier to debug and distribute than a complete copy of the game.

What you need

Required for a small official-system mod

  • A legal Windows installation of Friday Night Funkin’ that supports the documented mod system.
  • A plain-text editor for JSON and scripts.
  • An image editor for sprites, backgrounds, and icons.
  • Audio software for composing, editing, trimming, normalizing, or converting music.
  • A supported charting workflow or chart editor.
  • A clean way to test the mod repeatedly.

You do not need Haxe knowledge or a source build for a basic asset replacement or data-driven mod. Pixel-art skill, music production, JSON, Lua, Haxe/HScript, Git, and team collaboration are helpful rather than prerequisites.

Free tools are enough for a first prototype. A full DAW such as FL Studio is relevant if you plan to compose, record, mix, and produce original songs regularly, but is unnecessary when you only need basic audio editing. Aseprite can be useful for pixel art and frame animation; its official FAQ lists a $19.99 USD minimum pledge for convenient 1.x Windows and macOS builds, with update availability subject to its stated policy. Neither purchase is required to begin.

Build a minimal test mod first

Before attempting a full week, prove that the game can see your mod. This sequence isolates installation errors from charting, audio, animation, and scripting problems.

1. Create the mod folder

Inside the game installation, create a folder under mods:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Friday Night Funkin’/
└── mods/
    └── my-first-mod/

The exact location depends on where you installed the game, but the mod folder belongs inside that installation’s mods directory.

2. Add the metadata file

Create mods/my-first-mod/_polymod_meta.json with valid JSON. The current official creating-mods guide shows this kind of metadata:

{
  "title": "My First Mod",
  "description": "A small test mod.",
  "contributors": [
    {
      "name": "Your Name"
    }
  ],
  "api_version": "0.8.0",
  "mod_version": "1.0.0",
  "license": "CC-BY-4.0"
}

The guide currently identifies _polymod_meta.json as required and uses fields including title, description, contributors, api_version, mod_version, and license. Treat 0.8.0 as the guide’s current example, not a permanent value. Copy the value and schema from the official documentation for the game version you are targeting.

api_version describes compatibility with the mod API; mod_version describes your project. They are not interchangeable, and a matching API value does not replace in-game testing. Choose a license only when you understand the rights it grants. Credit borrowed music, art, code, fonts, samples, and voices.

3. Add an optional icon

The official guide recommends a _polymod_icon.png at the mod root, with 256×256 pixels as the recommended size:

my-first-mod/
├── _polymod_meta.json
└── _polymod_icon.png

4. Replace one known asset

Use a deliberately obvious test asset and preserve the path the game expects:

my-first-mod/
└── images/
    └── newgrounds_logo.png

This works only if that is the exact path and filename loaded by the target official release. The point is not the particular logo; it is learning the override rule. Match capitalization, spelling, extension, and directory structure exactly.

5. Launch and inspect the result

Put the mod in mods, launch FNF, inspect the mod list or console/log output, and look for the changed asset. The official guide includes a successful-load message showing loaded mod names and versions. If this first replacement works, your installation and basic metadata are sound.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use only the folders your mod needs

The official guide gives this broad layout:

my-first-mod/
├── _polymod_meta.json
├── _polymod_icon.png
├── data/
├── images/
├── music/
├── sounds/
├── songs/
├── scripts/
└── _append/
  • data/ holds JSON data files.
  • images/ holds image assets.
  • music/ holds music files such as .ogg.
  • sounds/ holds sound effects such as .ogg.
  • songs/ holds song charts and related song data.
  • scripts/ holds HScript files.
  • _append/ is used for merging content into supported existing text or data files.

Do not create every directory just because it appears in an example. A clean mod contains the metadata and the assets, data, and scripts it actually changes.

Add a custom song

A song is four separate jobs, not one file:

  1. Compose or legally obtain the music.
  2. Export it in the format and location expected by your target engine.
  3. Create and test the chart.
  4. Register the song or level in the relevant data files.

For the official system, follow the current custom songs and Story Mode levels documentation. A rough project may include:

my-first-mod/
├── _polymod_meta.json
├── music/
├── songs/
└── data/

Do not invent filenames or copy a chart schema from another engine. Difficulty names, identifiers, audio paths, chart structure, and level-registration files are version-sensitive. Copy the current official example—or the documentation for Codename Engine or Psych Engine if that is your chosen target.

Charting rules that prevent common problems

  • Chart against the final or nearly final mix, not a temporary export.
  • Confirm BPM and timing before placing notes.
  • Test every difficulty in-game.
  • Check tempo changes, pauses, vocals, unusual sync points, sustains, misses, events, and transitions.
  • Use a simple chart first, then add complex events and note types.
  • Make sure the chart is playable at the intended scroll speed.

Psych Engine’s chart editor has its own features, including event notes, decimal BPM values, precise strum-time adjustment, and multiple note types. Those controls should not be treated as universal FNF controls or assumed to produce an official-system chart.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Add a custom character

A character usually needs all of the following:

  • Sprite artwork, commonly a sprite sheet.
  • Animation definitions or atlas information.
  • Character metadata for animations, offsets, position, icon, and related properties.
  • A song or level that references the exact character identifier.

The official guide illustrates paired .png and .xml character assets and character data under data/characters/. A conceptual layout is:

my-first-mod/
├── images/
│   └── characters/
│       ├── my-character.png
│       └── my-character.xml
└── data/
    └── characters/
        └── my-character.json

The exact filenames and fields belong to the target version. An image alone is not enough when the engine expects animation definitions and metadata.

Character troubleshooting

  • If the character is invisible, verify the sprite path and metadata identifier.
  • If it is frozen, compare animation names in the data with the names referenced by the game.
  • If it appears off-screen, check offsets, scale, and position.
  • Test one idle animation before adding singing animations.
  • Do not assume a character format from Psych or Codename will load in the official system.

The official HScript documentation also warns that scripted classes need unique names, including across different mods. A duplicate can cause one copy to be suppressed unexpectedly.

Add a custom stage

Build a stage in layers rather than starting with camera effects:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Create one static background.
  2. Place it at the correct scale.
  3. Add foreground layers and props.
  4. Position both characters.
  5. Add animated props.
  6. Add camera movement or scripted effects last.

A stage generally combines background and foreground images, layout or positioning data, character positions, camera behavior, and optional scripts. Use the official custom stages documentation for the target release. Keeping the first stage static makes a wrong path, scale, or position easy to identify.

Add dialogue, weeks, cutscenes, and mechanics

Use data-driven features whenever they are sufficient. The official mod system supports content such as custom songs, Story Mode weeks, characters, stages, animated props, and chart events through supported mod content. Advanced behavior—such as a bespoke cutscene, unusual gameplay rule, or dynamic interaction—may require scripting.

Official scripting: HScript

The official system uses HScript, an interpreted language provided through Polymod. It resembles Haxe and can access much of the game’s variables and classes, but it is restricted: some classes, language features, and functionality are unavailable or blacklisted. It is not accurate to promise that HScript can do anything the game can do.

Scripts may be placed at the mod root or in scripts/:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
my-first-mod/
└── scripts/
    ├── MyModule.hxc
    └── CustomSprite.hxc

Keep each change small. Test one behavior, use unique class and module names, retain a versioned backup, and remove a failing script temporarily to confirm that the data-only mod still loads. Treat every script as executable code; do not paste unknown scripts into a personal installation.

Engine-specific scripting

Psych Engine projects commonly use external Lua files and Psych’s own charting and event systems. Codename Engine has its own softcoding model, APIs, documentation, and release channels. Their scripts and data are not automatically portable to the official system. Follow the documentation for the engine you selected.

Test in a deliberate ladder

Test after every milestone, in this order:

  1. Launch: does the game start with the mod installed?
  2. Detection: does the mod appear in the mod list or load log?
  3. Override: does the simplest replacement work?
  4. Song visibility: does the song appear where expected?
  5. Playback: does the chart start, remain synchronized, and finish?
  6. Characters: do sprites and animations load correctly?
  7. Stage: are layers, positions, scale, and camera behavior correct?
  8. Scripts: does each custom behavior work without crashes?
  9. Distribution: does the compressed archive work on a clean installation?

Common failures and fixes

The mod does not appear

  • Confirm it is inside the correct installation’s mods folder.
  • Check that the archive was fully extracted.
  • Ensure the file is exactly _polymod_meta.json, not _polymod_meta.json.txt.
  • Validate the JSON syntax.
  • Check for an extra nesting level, such as mods/my-first-mod/my-first-mod/.
  • Check whether the documented API version matches the game version.
  • Read the console or log for a parsing error.

The game launches but the replacement is unchanged

Confirm the mod loaded, then compare the replacement’s path, capitalization, filename, and extension with the path the game actually loads. Use an unmistakable test image and do not rely on a path copied from a Psych Engine tutorial.

The song appears but cannot be played

Check that audio filenames, chart filenames, metadata identifiers, difficulty registration, and directories agree. Start with one simple chart before adding events or special note types. Recheck the current target-engine example because schemas can change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The character is invisible or frozen

Verify that the sprite loads, animation definitions point to valid frames, the character identifier matches the song or level reference, and offsets and scale place it on-screen. Test idle first, then singing animations.

The game crashes after adding a script

Remove the script and confirm the data-only mod loads. Restore the last working version, check the extension and location, inspect syntax and API names, rename potentially duplicated classes, and avoid restricted functionality.

Package and publish the mod

When the project works, package it as a ZIP with the mod folder at the archive root:

my-first-mod.zip
└── my-first-mod/
    ├── _polymod_meta.json
    ├── images/
    └── ...

Avoid an archive that begins with unrelated folders such as Downloads/fnf-project/my-first-mod/. Include installation instructions, the compatible game or engine version, screenshots, a changelog, credits, licenses, and a homepage or source repository where appropriate. Install your own ZIP on a clean copy as if you were a stranger downloading it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Rights and credits checklist

  • Use music and samples you created or have permission to distribute.
  • Do not redistribute ripped game assets or copyrighted characters without the necessary rights.
  • Check whether third-party code and fonts permit redistribution and commercial use.
  • Credit collaborators and borrowed material clearly.
  • Record licenses and permissions in the release documentation.
  • Understand that a technically working mod can still be unsuitable for public distribution or monetization.

itch.io can host a free or paid project page, and uploading content costs nothing. Its open revenue-sharing model lets creators choose the percentage sent to the platform; payment-provider fees still apply. For an FNF mod, free distribution with optional donations is often more appropriate than requiring payment, especially when collaborators or third-party licenses impose restrictions. itch.io does not guarantee discovery or a large audience.

How long does making a mod take?

A basic reskin can potentially be an afternoon project for a beginner. A polished one-song mod usually takes substantially longer because it combines music production, charting, art, animation, testing, and packaging. A full week with custom mechanics and cutscenes is a multi-discipline project rather than a quick extension of a reskin. These are planning categories, not measured guarantees.

You also do not need to master every discipline. A mod team can divide work among a musician, charter, artist, animator, writer, and programmer. Keep shared files, identifiers, engine version, licenses, and change history organized—Git or another version-control system is especially useful once more than one person edits the project.

A practical milestone plan

  1. Prototype: one asset replacement that loads.
  2. Playable content: one original song and one tested chart.
  3. Identity: one custom character with working animations.
  4. Scene: one custom stage with correct placement.
  5. Behavior: one isolated scripted feature.
  6. Release: a tested ZIP with credits, compatibility information, and installation instructions.

If a milestone fails, roll back to the previous working one instead of adding more features. This is faster than debugging music, animation, stage layout, and scripts simultaneously.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to know how to code to make an FNF mod?

No. A reskin and many data-driven additions can be made with assets, JSON, audio, and charting. Learn HScript, Lua, or source programming only when your chosen engine and feature require it.

Can I make a mod without drawing or composing music?

Yes. You can collaborate with artists and musicians, but obtain permission to distribute their work and credit them clearly.

Do I need Psych Engine?

No. The official FNF mod system is the recommended starting point for a new project targeting current official releases. Use Psych Engine when the project specifically targets Psych or follows a Psych-specific workflow.

Can I sell an FNF mod?

Only after checking the rights for every song, sample, asset, character, font, and code component. A free download with optional donations may be a safer model, but licensing still matters.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Where can I publish an FNF mod?

A platform such as itch.io can host a free, donation, or paid project page. State the compatible engine and game version, provide installation instructions, and test the uploaded ZIP.
