To make a Lifesteal Minecraft server, run a Minecraft: Java Edition server—preferably Paper for plugin support—then install a Lifesteal plugin, configure its heart or life rules, and test the complete death-and-revival loop before anyone joins. Lifesteal is not a separate official server download: it is ordinary Java server software plus a gameplay plugin.
Playing with friends? Godlike.Host runs hosted Minecraft Java servers from 10 data-center locations, with free DDoS protection.
The safest build order is to establish a private server first, verify that the plugin matches your exact Minecraft and Paper versions, then configure networking and invite players. The plugin determines what “lifesteal” actually means, so do not promise players a ruleset until you have read and tested its configuration.

A Lifesteal server changes the normal survival loop so player combat affects health, hearts, or lives. Depending on the plugin, killing another player can award a heart, while dying to a player removes one. Reaching a configured minimum can eliminate a player, send them into spectator mode, ban them, or require a special revival process.
The server has three separate layers:
- Minecraft Java Edition server software: the world, players, permissions, saves, and network connection.
- Paper (optional but usually practical): a Java server implementation designed to improve performance and provide advanced features and an API for plugins. Paper’s documentation treats initial setup and adding plugins as the basic workflow.
- The Lifesteal plugin: the rules for hearts or lives, rewards, penalties, elimination, revival items, recipes, commands, and data storage.
Because plugins implement different rules, two servers both labelled “Lifesteal” can play very differently. Choose and document the rules before opening the server.

What you need before installing
- A computer or managed host capable of running the Minecraft version you intend to use.
- A Java runtime compatible with that Minecraft and Paper release.
- The official Java Edition server JAR or a Paper server build for the same Minecraft version.
- A dedicated, writable server folder with enough storage for the world, logs, plugin files, and backups.
- A Lifesteal plugin whose supported version explicitly includes your Minecraft and Paper build.
- Router access if players outside your home network will connect directly to a home-hosted server.
Do not select the plugin first and then build around an unsupported server version. Check the plugin listing and release notes against the exact Minecraft version shown by your server at startup.
Build the server privately first
1. Install a compatible Java runtime
Install the Java version required by the Minecraft release you plan to run. Compatibility is version-dependent; use the requirement stated by the server or Paper documentation rather than assuming the newest Java installation will work. Confirm Java is available from a terminal with:
java -version
If the command is not found, install Java and make sure it is on your system PATH. On a managed host, the control panel normally provides a selectable Java runtime.
2. Create a dedicated server folder
Make a new folder used only for this server. Keeping the server JAR, world folders, configuration, logs, and plugins together makes backups and recovery much simpler. Avoid running the server from a downloads folder that is routinely cleaned or synchronized.
3. Download and launch the server
Download the official Java Edition server JAR, or download a Paper build for the same Minecraft version. Put the JAR in the dedicated folder and launch it once. A typical Java launch form is:
java -Xms2G -Xmx4G -jar paper.jar nogui
Replace the filename and memory values with the file and resources available on your machine. The Minecraft Help Java server guide specifically notes that the memory allocation should be adjusted to the RAM dedicated to the server. Do not allocate all system memory; the operating system and any other services still need room.

4. Review server.properties before adding players
Stop the server cleanly, open server.properties, and review the world and access settings. At minimum, decide the server name shown in the multiplayer list, game mode, difficulty, PvP setting, and whether a whitelist should be enabled during testing. Save the file and restart so the values are applied.
Use a whitelist while the rules are being tested. It prevents an accidental public connection while you are still changing elimination or revival behavior.
Install a Lifesteal plugin on Paper
1. Verify compatibility and scope
Read the plugin’s supported Minecraft and Paper versions, dependency notes, permissions, configuration instructions, and update history. A listing called LifeSteal 1.0.2 describes a Spigot/Paper plugin that adds heart-based combat, eliminations, revive mechanics, and custom items; it was updated on July 3, 2026. That description is not a guarantee that it supports every current Minecraft version, so match the listing to your server build before downloading.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2. Put the JAR in the plugins folder
- Stop the server.
- Open the server folder and create a folder named
pluginsif it does not already exist. - Place the Lifesteal plugin JAR directly inside
plugins. Do not leave it inside a ZIP file or an extra nested folder. - Start the server and watch the console for a successful enable message or a clear compatibility error.
Paper’s plugin setup guidance follows this same basic pattern: place a plugin JAR in plugins, restart, and inspect the generated files and console output.
3. Complete the plugin’s first-run setup
For the cited LifeSteal 1.0.2 listing, the first-run sequence is to start the server so configuration files are generated and then run:
/lssetup
Run setup from the server console or in game with the permission required by that plugin. A different Lifesteal plugin may use another command, a configuration file, or an in-game setup menu. Never assume that a command from one project exists in another.
Decide the rules before opening the server
Write the rules in a short document or server welcome message after testing them. Players need to know what they risk and how they can return after elimination.

Starting, maximum, and earned hearts
- Starting amount: the hearts or lives a new player receives.
- Maximum amount: the cap preventing unlimited accumulation.
- Kill reward: whether the killer receives a heart, a life, an item, or another reward.
- Transfer amount: whether one death moves exactly one heart or a configurable quantity.
Check whether the plugin stores health as Minecraft hearts, half-hearts, or abstract lives. A configuration label that says “health” may not behave like the vanilla health bar.
Player death and natural death
Determine whether only player kills trigger Lifesteal changes. Some plugins penalize health when one player kills another but leave deaths from falls, mobs, fire, or the void unchanged. Others apply a penalty to every death. Test at least one PvP death and one natural death with a disposable account or trusted tester.
Elimination, spectator mode, and bans
Set the threshold at which a player is eliminated. Confirm what happens immediately afterward:
- Is the player switched to spectator mode?
- Are they prevented from rejoining?
- Are their items dropped or protected?
- Can an administrator restore them, or is a revival item required?
- Does elimination occur at zero hearts, zero lives, or a separate configured value?
Do not advertise “permanent elimination” until you have tested the exact recovery path.

Revival items and recipes
Inspect the plugin’s custom items, crafting recipes, and usage limits. Decide who can craft or use a revival item, whether it revives the eliminated player automatically, and where the revived player appears. If a recipe uses rare resources, explain that economy to players before the season starts.
Commands and permissions
List the commands your staff will actually use: setup, give or remove hearts, revive, reset player data, reload configuration, and administrative inspection. Obtain the exact command names and permission nodes from the plugin’s documentation. Grant administrative permissions to a staff group rather than to every player, and test commands as both an operator and a normal account.
Why plugin choice changes the game
“Lifesteal” is a category, not one universal ruleset. The two published listings in the available documentation illustrate the difference:
Rank #4
- Skins! We have biome settlers, city folk, town folk, and more!
- The Nether and all its inhabitants. Fight Ghasts and make friends with Pigmen
- Cross platform play for up to five players between Pocket Edition and Windows 10
- Revamped touch controls, controller support, and a controller mapping screen
- Enhanced Weather effects! Accumulating snow and more

When comparing candidates, evaluate exact version compatibility, the heart or life economy, kill and death rules, elimination and revival, custom recipes, commands and permissions, configuration and data storage, documentation quality, update history, and whether the project is maintained. Download counts are volatile marketplace counters, not evidence of performance or reliability.

Use two whitelisted test accounts. Run the following checks before inviting friends:
- Join with a fresh account and record its starting hearts or lives.
- Confirm the health display and any plugin scoreboard agree with the configured starting value.
- Perform one permitted player kill and verify the killer’s reward.
- Check the victim’s penalty, inventory, spawn location, and chat message.
- Repeat until the maximum-heart cap and minimum threshold are reached.
- Trigger a natural death and verify whether it changes the Lifesteal value.
- Reach the elimination threshold and record the resulting game mode, ban, or lockout.
- Use the documented revival method and verify where the revived player appears and how many hearts they receive.
- Restart the server and confirm that heart and elimination data persist.
- Test the administrator reset or recovery command before a real player needs it.
Keep a copy of the working configuration after this test. If a later change breaks the economy, you can restore the known-good version.

Home hosting
Mojang’s official Java server guide describes the public-IP connection model and router port forwarding. The default query port identified in that guide is 25565; use the port shown in your own server.properties if you changed it.
- Give the server computer a stable local address on your home network, using a DHCP reservation or equivalent router setting.
- Forward the server’s TCP port from the router to that local address. Router menus differ by manufacturer, so follow your router’s own instructions.
- Allow the Java server through the computer’s firewall for the selected network profile.
- Find your public IP address and give the address and port only to people you trust.
- Test from a device outside your home network, such as a phone using cellular data. Testing from inside the same network can produce misleading results.
Exposing a home public IP creates security and operational risk. Keep the operating system, Java runtime, server software, and plugins updated; use a whitelist; avoid sharing the address publicly; and stop the server if you cannot maintain it.
Managed hosting
A managed Minecraft host can provide continuous availability, public access without home-router administration, backups, and adjustable resources. It is a convenience option rather than a requirement. Before choosing one, verify the supported Minecraft and Paper versions, plugin policy, backup and restore process, server location, resource limits, pricing, and uptime terms. You still need to configure and test the Lifesteal plugin yourself.
Backups, updates, and season resets
Back up the right data
Stop the server before copying the world folders, server.properties, the plugins folder, and the plugin’s generated configuration and data files. A backup made while the world is writing may be incomplete. Keep at least one copy away from the server computer and label it with the Minecraft, Paper, and plugin versions.
Best Value
- Play and share with friends on console, mobile and Windows 10
- discover community creations in the new in-game store
- access new mini games and game modes through servers
Update in a controlled order
Read the release notes before updating Minecraft, Paper, or the Lifesteal plugin. Take a backup, test the update on a copy of the world, and check for configuration migrations. Never replace a working plugin JAR during an active server session.
Recommended Free Tools
Resetting for a new season
Use the plugin’s documented reset command or data procedure rather than deleting unknown files. Decide whether a season reset also replaces the world, clears player inventories, removes bans, and returns everyone to the starting heart value. Announce the reset rules before performing it.
Troubleshooting common failures
The plugin does not appear in /plugins
- Confirm the JAR is directly in
plugins, not inside an archive or nested directory. - Read the startup log for a Java-version, dependency, or Minecraft-version error.
- Check that the file is a server plugin, not a client-only mod.
- Install a release that explicitly supports your Paper and Minecraft versions.
/lssetup or another command is unknown
Confirm that the plugin enabled successfully and that you are using the command documented for that specific project. Check capitalization, required permissions, and whether setup must be run from the console instead of in game.
Hearts change incorrectly
Recheck whether the setting applies to player kills, all deaths, or both. Look for maximum and minimum values, natural-death options, and another plugin modifying health. Reproduce the issue with two test accounts, then inspect the plugin log and configuration before changing multiple settings at once.
Friends cannot connect
- Verify they are using Java Edition and the same Minecraft version as the server.
- Confirm the forwarded port matches
server.properties. - Check the firewall and router destination address.
- Test from outside the home network.
- Ensure the whitelist includes their exact in-game names.
The server becomes unstable after an update
Stop the server, restore the last known-good backup, and return to the previously working Paper and plugin combination. Then test the update on a copy instead of repeatedly changing the live server.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I make a Lifesteal server without Paper?
Some Lifesteal plugins support other server implementations, but the cited LifeSteal listing targets Spigot/Paper. Paper is the practical choice when you want its performance features and plugin workflow; always follow the specific plugin’s compatibility statement.
Do players need a Lifesteal mod installed?
A server-side plugin normally does not require players to install a client mod. Players still need Minecraft: Java Edition and a version compatible with the server. Confirm client requirements in the plugin’s own documentation.
What is the default Lifesteal number of hearts?
There is no universal default. Starting hearts, maximum hearts, kill rewards, death penalties, and elimination thresholds are plugin-specific settings that you must inspect and test.
Can I host the server for free at home?
You can run the software on a suitable computer without paying for managed hosting, but home hosting still requires Java, electricity, maintenance, firewall and router configuration, and attention to the security risk of exposing your public IP.
How do I revive an eliminated player?
Use the revival item, command, or procedure provided by your chosen plugin. Test it before launch because one plugin may use a craftable item while another may require an administrator command or a different recovery flow.
