RLCraft Server Cheats: Admin Commands and How to Enable Them (2.9.3)

On RLCraft 2.9.3 for Minecraft Java 1.12.2, server cheats mean operator permissions. This guide covers /op, /deop, /gamerule, enable-command-block=true, legacy /rlcraft commands, and troubleshooting.

On a dedicated RLCraft server, “cheats” are operator permissions, not a player-side toggle. The server owner (or an existing operator) must grant your Minecraft account operator status with /op <player> from the server console. After you reconnect, commands such as /gamerule work at the permission level assigned to you. If you only need command blocks to run, set enable-command-block=true in server.properties; that setting is separate from player permissions.

This guide targets RLCraft 2.9.3 on Minecraft Java Edition 1.12.2. RLCraft is a large, heavily configured pack (approximately 185 mods, or 186 with OptiFine), so command availability can differ between installations. The documented /rlcraft commands come from an older plugin reference and should be treated as a legacy command set rather than a guarantee for every current server.

What “cheats” mean in RLCraft multiplayer

RLCraft does not replace Minecraft’s basic server permission model. On a dedicated Java server, elevated commands are controlled by operator status and, where installed, a permissions system. A regular player cannot open a menu and switch on cheats for everyone else. The server console, the owner’s control panel, or an existing operator has to grant access.

That is different from a Java single-player world. In single-player, the world owner can temporarily enable commands by opening the world to LAN and choosing Allow Cheats: On. That option applies to that local world session; it does not give an ordinary player rights on a remotely hosted RLCraft server.

RLCraft’s version matters because its mods, Forge build, and supporting plugins were configured for a particular Minecraft release. The instructions and permission names below are written for the 2.9.3 pack on Java 1.12.2. A different pack release, a server-side plugin, or a custom permissions file can change what appears in tab completion.

Choose the access method that matches your goal

Goal Correct mechanism Who changes it How long it lasts
Use elevated vanilla commands as a player Grant operator status with /op <player> Server console or existing operator Until removed with /deop
Change a world rule such as a gamerule Operator or equivalent permission level; Java /gamerule is permission level 2 Authorized administrator Depends on the world rule and server state
Run automation from command blocks Set enable-command-block=true in server.properties Server owner or host administrator Persistent after restart while the property remains enabled
Use RLCraft-specific plugin commands Install the relevant plugin and grant its named permission nodes Server owner or permissions administrator Depends on the plugin and permissions configuration
Temporarily use commands in a local world Pause the single-player world, choose Open to LAN, and set Allow Cheats to On That world’s owner Temporary LAN session

How to enable cheats on a dedicated RLCraft server

The reliable workflow is to grant operator status from the server console, then reconnect the player. Do not confuse this with changing a client setting: the permission is stored and enforced by the server.

Before you begin

  • Confirm that the server is running the RLCraft 2.9.3 pack on Minecraft Java 1.12.2, or note that your installation is a different version.
  • Obtain console access through the machine running the server or through your host’s administrative console. A normal in-game player account cannot grant itself operator status.
  • Back up the world before changing gamerules, experimenting with command blocks, or testing unfamiliar plugin commands.
  • Have the player’s exact in-game name available. Entering a similar name will target a different account or fail.

Grant operator status

  1. Open the dedicated server console. If your host provides a web panel, use its live console; the exact panel labels and command syntax are host-dependent.
  2. Enter /op <player>, replacing <player> with the account name. For example, /op AlexRLC.
  3. Wait for the console to confirm that the player has been made an operator. If no confirmation appears, check for spelling errors and make sure the command was sent to the Minecraft server rather than a chat or shell window.
  4. Have the player disconnect and reconnect. Reconnecting refreshes the permission state on the client and avoids testing with an old session.
  5. In game, test a low-impact command such as /gamerule with the syntax appropriate to the rule you intend to inspect or change. Java’s /gamerule command requires permission level 2.

Operator status is intentionally powerful. Give it only to people who administer the world, not to every member of a community. When the job is finished, remove access from the console with /deop <player>, then ask the player to reconnect again.

If your host uses a control panel

Some hosts expose a console field, an operator list, or a server-properties editor instead of a terminal. The exact buttons are not established by the RLCraft documentation, so follow your host’s labels and use its Minecraft console function when available. Do not assume that a panel’s “cheats” checkbox changes Java operator permissions; verify by reconnecting and testing the command in game.

Understanding permission levels and /gamerule

Java Edition assigns permission levels to operator commands. The relevant point for RLCraft administration is that /gamerule <rule> [value] requires permission level 2. If a player sees a “You do not have permission” message, the server has not granted that account enough authority, regardless of what the player can see in a client menu.

Why an operator can still receive a permission error

  • The account was never opped: Ask the owner to run /op <player> from the server console.
  • The player has not reconnected: Disconnect completely and join again after the console confirms the change.
  • The command is being sent to another server: On networks with multiple instances, verify that the console belongs to the RLCraft world you joined.
  • A permissions plugin changes the effective level: A custom permissions setup can restrict commands even when a player appears in an operator list. The server administrator must inspect that configuration.
  • Syntax is wrong: Use the Java command format, including the gamerule name and, when changing a value, the value itself.

Do not solve a permission error by repeatedly trying random command variants. First confirm the account name, the server instance, operator status, and the permission level required by the command.

Enabling command blocks with server.properties

Command-block execution is a server property, not a substitute for opping a player. A command block can execute commands when the server permits it, while a player still needs the appropriate permission to type elevated commands directly.

The CurseForge RLCraft project listing gives this warning verbatim: Server owners be aware that enable-command-block=true must be set in your server.properties file or certain structures will not generate correctly and be missing villagers!

  • Players match colors and numbers to the card on top of the discard pile as in the classic game.

Set the property

  1. Stop the server cleanly so that the configuration file is not overwritten while you edit it.
  2. Open the server’s server.properties file in a plain-text editor.
  3. Find the line beginning with enable-command-block=. If it is present, change its value to true, with no quotation marks: enable-command-block=true.
  4. If the line is absent, add it as its own line using that exact key and value.
  5. Save the file and start the server again. A restart is required for the server to load the changed property.
  6. Test a known command-block setup in a safe area before relying on it in a live world.

Keep this setting distinct from /op. Turning the property on allows command blocks to execute; it does not automatically make every player an operator. Conversely, opping yourself does not necessarily repair a server where command blocks are disabled.

When structures or villagers are missing

If an RLCraft structure fails to generate correctly or expected villagers are absent, check the property first. The project listing specifically connects those generation problems with enable-command-block being disabled. Correct the setting, restart the server, and test in a backup or newly generated area rather than risking the only copy of an established world.

RLCraft-specific /rlcraft commands

A version-specific RLCraft reference documents a small plugin command set. Those pages describe an RLCraft 1.2-era plugin, not a universal feature of every 2.9.3 server. Use the table as a compatibility checklist: type /rlcraft and inspect tab completion, confirm that the corresponding plugin is installed, and check the server log if the command is unknown.

Command Function Permission node Accepted value
/rlcraft give <player> <item> Gives the specified item to a player rlcraft.command.give Player name and item identifier accepted by that plugin
/rlcraft thirst <player> <0-20> Sets a player’s thirst value rlcraft.command.thirst Integer from 0 through 20
/rlcraft temperature <player> <0-25> Sets a player’s temperature value rlcraft.command.temperature Integer from 0 through 25
/rlcraft reload Reloads the plugin configuration rlcraft.command.reload No player or numeric argument

The same permissions reference lists rlcraft.command.* as a wildcard covering the listed RLCraft plugin permissions. A wildcard can be broader than intended, so grant the individual node when an administrator only needs one function. A permission node has no effect if the plugin that defines it is not installed.

Why a documented command may be unavailable

  • Legacy documentation: The command pages target an older plugin generation and may not match the modern pack.
  • Different server build: A client can have the RLCraft mods while the server lacks the separate plugin that registered /rlcraft.
  • Permission node missing: The command may appear in help but reject execution until its exact node is granted.
  • Name or argument mismatch: Use tab completion where available; respect the numeric ranges shown above.

Do not install an unrelated plugin merely because it uses a similar command name. Confirm that it is intended for your Forge 1.12.2 server and keep a backup before changing plugin files or permissions.

Single-player and Open to LAN: the temporary method

If you are playing a local single-player RLCraft world, you do not need a dedicated-server console. Java Edition provides a temporary cheats switch through the LAN menu.

  1. Load the RLCraft world in single-player.
  2. Press Esc to pause, then choose Open to LAN.
  3. Set Allow Cheats to On.
  4. Choose Start LAN World.
  5. Use the command during that LAN session. When the session ends, the temporary setting does not become a permanent permission system for a dedicated server.

This method is useful for testing a build, checking a gamerule, or recovering a local world. It cannot be used by a regular participant to grant operator access on somebody else’s hosted server. If your world is already running on a dedicated machine, return to the console-based /op workflow instead.

Troubleshooting checklist

“You do not have permission” for /gamerule

  1. Ask the owner to run /op <player> in the correct server console.
  2. Confirm that the console response names the intended account.
  3. Reconnect to the server rather than relying on the existing session.
  4. Check whether a permissions plugin or network proxy is imposing a lower effective level.
  5. Use the Java syntax /gamerule <rule> [value]; permission level 2 is required.

/rlcraft says the command is unknown

That response usually means the legacy plugin is absent, disabled, or different from the one described by the old reference. Check tab completion, the server’s installed plugin or mod list, and startup logs. The RLCraft modpack alone does not prove that this separate command provider is present.

The command appears, but an individual subcommand is denied

Grant the exact node, such as rlcraft.command.thirst or rlcraft.command.temperature, through the server’s permissions system. If the administrator intentionally needs all documented subcommands, the reference lists rlcraft.command.*; use it only when that broader access is acceptable.

Command blocks do nothing

  • Inspect server.properties for the exact line enable-command-block=true.
  • Restart the server after editing the file.
  • Check that the block receives the expected redstone signal and that its command syntax is valid.
  • Remember that command-block execution and player operator status are separate controls.

Changes seem to disappear

Stop the server cleanly before editing configuration files, and keep dated backups of the world and configuration. If a host panel regenerates files, its documented settings interface may override manual edits; verify the live file after each restart and ask the host how it persists server.properties.

Safe administration practices

  • Use least privilege: Op only trusted administrators, and prefer individual plugin permission nodes over a wildcard when practical.
  • Back up before world-rule changes: Gamerules, command blocks, and item or thirst commands can alter a survival world in ways that are difficult to reverse.
  • Test away from players: Use a backup or test world to verify legacy commands and command-block behavior.
  • Remove temporary access: Run /deop <player> when an administrator no longer needs operator status.
  • Record configuration changes: Note when enable-command-block=true was set and which plugin permissions were granted.
  • Verify the actual version: RLCraft 2.9.3 and Minecraft Java 1.12.2 are the target versions here; a different release may expose different commands or permission nodes.

Practical command-access matrix

Situation What to do What not to expect
You own a dedicated server and need vanilla admin commands Use the server console to run /op <player>, then reconnect A client-side “Allow Cheats” switch cannot replace server permissions
You need /gamerule Use an account with Java permission level 2 or higher Being able to join the server does not imply gamerule access
You need command-block automation Set enable-command-block=true and restart Enabling blocks does not op every player
You need /rlcraft thirst or /rlcraft temperature Verify the legacy plugin, then grant the corresponding permission node The command is not guaranteed on every current RLCraft installation
You are in a local single-player world Open to LAN and turn Allow Cheats on for the session This does not grant rights on a remote dedicated server

Key points for RLCraft 2.9.3 administrators

For a dedicated server, the answer to “How do I enable cheats?” is operational rather than client-side: grant operator status from the console, reconnect, and use commands permitted by that operator level. For world generation and command-block execution, independently set enable-command-block=true in server.properties. For the older /rlcraft commands, verify that the specific plugin and permission nodes exist before relying on them. Those three checks—operator status, the command-block property, and plugin compatibility—explain most RLCraft command-access problems without weakening the server’s security model.
