You do not craft the sword from scratch. The template-based recipe is documented for Java 1.20 and Bedrock’s Trails & Tales release; details can vary in later versions, snapshots, mods, or custom servers.
What you need
- A diamond sword
- A Netherite Upgrade Smithing Template
- A netherite ingot
- A smithing table
The upgrade inputs are documented in the official Java 1.20 release notes and Bedrock Trails & Tales release notes.
How to upgrade a diamond sword to Netherite
- Open a smithing table.
- Place the Netherite Upgrade Smithing Template in the template slot, the diamond sword in the equipment slot, and the netherite ingot in the material slot.
- Take the Netherite sword from the output slot.
The template is consumed when used, so you need another one for each additional upgrade.
Where to find a Netherite Upgrade Smithing Template
Look for the template in Bastion Remnant chests in the Nether. Mojang’s Java 1.20 and Bedrock Trails & Tales notes state that every Treasure Room Bastion Remnant contains two templates. Reaching a Bastion is a progression challenge, so prepare for the trip before setting out.

Copying a template
Java 1.20 notes describe a way to copy smithing templates using seven diamonds, the original template, and one block of the template’s base material. The base material for the Netherite Upgrade template is not specified here; check the recipe shown in your current game before spending resources.
What the upgrade preserves—and what “strongest” means
Mojang’s 2020 Netherite overview says upgrading preserves an item’s durability, enchantments, and custom name. That same article described Netherite equipment as hitting harder and lasting longer than diamond equivalents.

For durability, Mojang gave an approximate comparison: a diamond sword could deal about 11,000 damage points before breaking, while a Netherite sword could deal more than 16,000. Those are figures published in 2020, not a current benchmark or a measurement of damage per hit. They support saying Netherite swords last longer than diamond swords, not declaring Netherite the strongest weapon in every edition, version, enchantment setup, or combat situation.
