You don’t create a Roblox sound ID yourself: Roblox assigns one when you upload an audio file. If you want a sound that already exists, find it in the Creator Store and copy its asset ID. In either case, the experience must have permission to use the audio, and you need to place the ID in an audio object for playback.
Choose whether to upload audio or use an existing sound

How to get an ID for your own audio
Prepare a permitted audio file
Roblox lists .mp3, .ogg, .wav, and .flac as supported formats. The file must be under 20 MB and 7 minutes, have a sample rate no higher than 48 kHz, and use mono or a supported surround configuration: 2.0, 3.0, or 5.1. Check Roblox’s audio asset requirements for current details.
Only upload audio you have the necessary rights and licenses to use on Roblox. Owning a downloaded copy of a song does not, by itself, establish that you can upload it. Roblox’s Audio Upload License Agreement makes the uploader responsible for maintaining required licenses and gives Roblox broad rights to use uploaded audio on the platform, including sublicensing it for platform experiences.
Import the file
- In Roblox Studio, open Asset Manager and click Import.
- Select the audio file and confirm the import.
- Wait for the import to complete. Roblox assigns the new audio asset a unique ID after a successful import.
You can also import through the Creator Dashboard or the Open Cloud API. Imported audio goes through transcoding and moderation, so a completed file import does not necessarily mean moderation or rights checks are finished.

Check access permissions
Imported audio is private by default. Check the asset’s privacy settings and grant the target experience permission if needed. Roblox’s asset privacy guidance explains how access is controlled. A valid ID can fail to play if the experience is not allowed to use the asset.
How to copy an ID for an existing Creator Store sound
- In Studio, open Toolbox and select the Creator Store tab.
- Choose Audio, then search or filter for a sound.
- Right-click the asset and select Copy Asset ID.
The Creator Store provides audio for Roblox experiences, and Roblox’s support article describes its assets as mostly free. Check the selected asset’s permissions and terms before relying on it in a published experience.

Use the ID to play audio in an experience
Use the newer AudioPlayer objects
Roblox’s audio object documentation describes loading an asset ID with an AudioPlayer. For non-directional playback, connect the AudioPlayer to an AudioDeviceOutput with a Wire. For positional audio, connect it to an AudioEmitter. The setup determines how players hear the sound.
Use the legacy Sound object
Roblox also documents the Sound object and its SoundId property. For positional audio, parent a Sound to a 3D object or an Attachment. For non-positional background audio, parent it to Workspace or SoundService. Consult Roblox’s Sound documentation when deciding whether the legacy object or newer audio objects fit your experience.

If the sound does not play
- Confirm the ID: Use the ID Roblox assigned or the one copied from the Creator Store; you do not invent the number.
- Check permissions: For imported audio, confirm the target experience can access the private asset.
- Check processing: Import completion does not guarantee transcoding, moderation, or rights checks are finished.
- Check the audio setup: Confirm the playback object is connected and placed appropriately for positional or non-directional sound.
- Check the rights and terms: Verify you are allowed to use the audio and that the asset’s terms suit your experience.
