To beat Duality, use its bells to move between the Material and Nightmare realms, collect and deposit the requested Standards, and get back through a bell before the Nightmare timer runs out. The dungeon has three encounters: Nightmare of Gahlran, the Vault, and Nightmare of Caiatl. Knowing which symbols to collect—and which Bellkeepers must be cleared for your return—is the key to each one.
Before you start
Duality is a Destiny 2 dungeon, an endgame PvE activity designed for a fireteam of up to three players. Bungie’s “#10: Activities” page describes dungeons as coordination-heavy activities with unique gear. A solo attempt is possible as a challenge, but the encounter instructions below assume a team can divide tasks.
Bungie lists the Witch Queen Dungeon Key as an access route for Duality and also includes the dungeon in Destiny 2: The Collection. Access can depend on your account and platform storefront, so check the in-game Director and your platform’s current listing before purchasing anything. Bungie’s “Purchased Destiny Add-Ons” and “Available Content: Expansions, Seasons, and More” pages describe these access paths.
Understand the bells, Standards, and timer
Use bells to change realms
Bells move players between the Material and Nightmare realms. Bellkeepers control access to bells, so clear the relevant Bellkeepers before you need to leave. Keep track of a usable exit bell while moving through the Nightmare realm; do not assume you can safely wait until the timer is almost gone.

Collect only the requested Standards
Read the requested symbols, defeat the matching Standard Bearers in the Nightmare realm, pick up their Standards, and deposit them at the matching points. In the Vault and Caiatl collection phases, Vaexil.tv’s Duality Interactive Companion, marked verified August 1, 2026, warns that killing an unrequested Standard Bearer sharply reduces the time available. Call out the symbols before anyone splits off to collect them.
Plan around the Nightmare timer
Vaexil.tv’s companion reports an initial 60-second Nightmare timer and a 15-second extension for killing a correct Standard Bearer. Treat those as the guide’s reported values, not a guarantee that every live run will display the same timing. Plan the route before switching realms, and return through a bell when the team’s safety margin is getting low rather than chasing an extra enemy or damage opportunity.

Encounter 1: Nightmare of Gahlran
- Deposit two Standards. Collect the two requested Standards and deposit them to open the side corridors.
- Enter the Nightmare realm and clear the Visions. Move into the opened corridors and defeat the required Visions of Gahlran. Vaexil.tv’s companion describes five Visions in each corridor.
- Regroup for damage. Once the required Visions are defeated, converge on Gahlran and damage him.
- Leave before the timer expires. Return through the active bell, then repeat the collection and damage sequence until Gahlran is defeated.
With three players, a practical division is one player controlling the central Bellkeepers while one runner handles each opened corridor. This is a tactical way to divide the documented tasks, not a universally optimal strategy. With fewer players, cover fewer routes at once and favour a safe return over trying to maximise one damage window.
Encounter 2: The Vault
The Vault has three shielded wardens. Each must be exposed by depositing two matching Standards before you can defeat it.

- Read the symbols for the next warden. Identify the two requested symbols before entering the Nightmare realm.
- Collect the matching Standards. Defeat only the Standard Bearers for those symbols and pick up both Standards. Avoid killing an unrequested Standard Bearer during the timed collection.
- Return and deposit both Standards. Use the bell to get back to the Material realm and deposit them to expose the warden.
- Defeat the warden, then repeat. Do the same for the other two wardens. Vaexil.tv’s companion says six Standards are used across the encounter.
Encounter 3: Nightmare of Caiatl
Collect and deposit the four Standards
- Read the requested symbols. Confirm both targets with the team before splitting up.
- Make two collection trips. Collect and deposit four Standards over two trips, taking care not to kill an unrequested Standard Bearer during the timed collection.
Start the damage sequence and ring the right bell
- Ring the large Bell of Proving. This begins the damage sequence.
- Clear Bellkeepers at the small bells. In the Nightmare realm, defeat the Bellkeepers so the small bells can be used.
- Follow Caiatl’s route. Watch which small bell Caiatl is approaching. Ring that bell when she is close to it; Vaexil.tv’s companion says this stuns her and opens the damage opportunity.
- Repeat as needed. Follow her movement again instead of committing to a bell too early, and repeat the mechanic until she is defeated.
How to avoid common wipes
- Call out the symbols before moving. Confirm which Standard Bearers are wanted, especially in the Vault and Caiatl phases where an unnecessary kill can cost time.
- Assign tasks before each realm change. Decide who is running Standards, who is clearing Bellkeepers, and who is making symbol callouts. Adjust the split to your fireteam size and experience.
- Keep an exit route in mind. Know which bell the team will use to return and leave enough time to regroup and reach it.
- Prioritise getting out over extra damage or kills. If the timer is low, take the safe return instead of extending the run for one more target.
- Check current known issues if a bell behaves unexpectedly. Bungie’s July 19, 2022 “Destiny 2 Update 4.1.5” notes a historical fix preventing splash damage from grenades, Solar explosions, rockets, and similar sources from triggering a bell teleport. That patch note documents that specific fix; it does not establish that every current bell interaction is bug-free.
What you need to know about builds and rewards
No class-specific loadout, optimal damage weapon, required Power level, or solo-flawless build is established by the sources cited here, so there is no sound basis for calling one setup mandatory or universally best. Choose a loadout you can use reliably while completing the encounter jobs and returning safely.
Bungie’s May 21, 2026 article, “Destiny 2: Every End is a New Beginning,” announced a broad update to raid and dungeon weapons and armour, including updated tiers, set bonuses, and perks. It does not provide a Duality-specific loot table, exact perk pool, or reward cadence, so check current official information or the in-game activity for those details.
