The reliable way to make a Rust server is to install the separate RustDedicated server with SteamCMD, not to run the retail Rust client as a host. SteamCMD uses Rust app ID 258550. Install a vanilla server first, create a named server identity, put persistent settings in that identity’s cfg/server.cfg, launch it with a batch file or shell script, and only then add uMod/Oxide plugins. You must also forward only the ports you actually use and test access from outside your home network.
Prefer not to run the server on your own PC? Godlike.Host offers hosted Rust servers with free DDoS protection and up to three free backups a day.
This guide covers a self-hosted Windows or Linux installation, hardware limits, configuration, RCON, Rust+, plugin updates, backups, and the failure modes that commonly make a new server invisible or unstable.

What you are actually installing
A Rust server is a separate dedicated-server installation. The Steam game client is used to connect and play; it is not the server software. RustDedicated runs the world, accepts player connections, writes saves and logs, and exposes administration interfaces such as RCON. SteamCMD downloads and updates those server files using app ID 258550.
Keep the installation divided into three kinds of data:

- Program files: the RustDedicated binaries installed and updated by SteamCMD.
- Server identity: the named folder containing your world state, configuration and other persistent server data.
- Launch and operations files: the Windows batch file or Linux shell/service definition, logs, firewall rules and backups.
This separation makes migrations and rollbacks safer. You can replace program files while preserving the identity folder, and you can audit boot-critical values in one launch script instead of hunting through several configuration files.
Choose where to host it
There is no single best host. The right choice depends on how much administration you want to perform and whether your internet connection can accept unsolicited traffic.
| Option | What you control | What you must operate | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Home PC | Full files, plugins, identity, ports and operating system | Electricity, router forwarding, firewall, updates, backups, DDoS exposure and recovery | A small private or community server when your upload bandwidth and hardware are dependable |
| VPS or cloud instance | Operating system, SteamCMD files, plugins and network rules | Hardening, patching, storage, monitoring, backups and capacity planning | Administrators comfortable with SSH and Linux service management |
| Managed Rust host | Usually the server identity, settings and plugin controls exposed by the panel | Panel-level configuration and your own content backups; the host handles much of the infrastructure | Owners who do not want to maintain SteamCMD, firewalls and recovery procedures |
Compare providers on recurring cost, region and latency, CPU and RAM limits, storage performance, DDoS and network protection, backup retention, update automation, recovery support, and whether game, query, RCON and Rust+ ports can be configured. Prices and included features change, so verify them for the region and plan you would actually buy. A managed service is simpler; a VPS or home machine gives you more file-level control but leaves security and maintenance with you.
Hardware and operating-system requirements
Memory is a baseline, not a capacity guarantee
The official Rust server documentation states: 12 GB free RAM (6k map will use more).
Treat that as a starting requirement for the server process, not a promise that every 12 GB machine can run a large public community. Player count, map size, CPU speed, plugin load, storage latency and other services all change the actual requirement. A 6k map needs more memory than the baseline, and running the game server, database, monitoring and other workloads on the same host reduces what remains available.
The official page does not publish a formal CPU benchmark table. Do not select a processor from an invented “players per core” rule. Instead, leave headroom, watch server frame time and memory during peak play, and reduce world size, player cap or plugin load when the host is consistently constrained. Fast, low-latency storage helps map and save operations, but no single drive model is mandated by the documentation.

Windows or Linux
Both operating systems have documented launch patterns. Windows is approachable if you are comfortable with batch files and desktop firewall tools. Linux works well over SSH and with service managers, but you must add your own process supervision, firewall policy, log rotation and update automation. Choose the system you can patch and recover confidently; an unattended server on a familiar platform is safer than a theoretically ideal platform you cannot administer.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Install SteamCMD and the vanilla server
Install SteamCMD using the package or download appropriate for your operating system, then create a dedicated directory that is not mixed with your retail game installation. Use a path you can back up and whose permissions allow the service account to read and write saves and logs.
Windows installation
- Create a directory such as
C:RustServerand placesteamcmd.exein a tools directory. - Open a Command Prompt in the SteamCMD directory and install the server into the dedicated directory. A representative command is
steamcmd.exe +force_install_dir C:RustServer +login anonymous +app_update 258550 +quit. - Wait for SteamCMD to finish before attempting the first launch. If it reports an interrupted download, run the same update again rather than copying files from a client installation.
- Confirm that the directory contains the RustDedicated executable and supporting files. Keep SteamCMD separate so an update script cannot accidentally target the wrong game directory.
Linux installation
- Create a dedicated directory, for example
/srv/rust, and run SteamCMD with an account that can write there. - From the SteamCMD directory, use
./steamcmd.sh +force_install_dir /srv/rust +login anonymous +app_update 258550 +quit. - Check ownership and permissions before creating a service. The account that launches RustDedicated must be able to write the identity folder, logs and saves.
- Keep the install path stable. A stable path makes your launch script, firewall documentation and backup jobs portable.
Do not install plugins during this stage. First prove that an untouched, vanilla server can start, listen and accept a test connection.
Create a server identity and durable configuration
Give the server a unique identity, such as community2026. Rust creates persistent data below the server root in server/<identity>. The durable configuration file belongs at server/<identity>/cfg/server.cfg; for this example, that is server/community2026/cfg/server.cfg. Creating the directory before the first launch is fine.
Use server.cfg for settings you want to survive a restart and remain easy to review, such as the public name, description and gameplay variables. A minimal example is:

server.hostname "Harbor Community
a server.description "A relaxed community server"
server.maxplayers 100
server.worldsize 4000
server.seed 1234
Replace the example values with choices your hardware can sustain. The world-size and player-cap examples are not universal recommendations. Keep ports, RCON credentials, the identity name and other boot-critical values in the launch script when that makes them easier to audit. Never commit an RCON password to a public repository or reuse it for another service.
After editing configuration, restart the server or use the configuration-reload behavior supported by the Rust build you are running. If a value appears ignored, check that you edited the cfg directory belonging to the identity used at launch; editing a similarly named folder is a common mistake.
Write a repeatable launch script
Windows batch file
Save a batch file in the Rust server root so the same arguments are used after every reboot. This representative command follows the documented pattern:
@echo off
RustDedicated.exe -batchmode ^
+server.port 28015 ^
+server.level "Procedural Map" ^
+server.seed 1234 ^
+server.worldsize 4000 ^
+server.maxplayers 100 ^
+server.hostname "Harbor Community" ^
+server.description "A relaxed community server" ^
+server.identity "community2026" ^
+rcon.port 28016 ^
+rcon.password "q7N!v3L#p9X2@r8K4" ^
-logfile "logs\server.log"
The values above are examples. Generate a different long, random RCON secret for your installation, choose a unique identity, and set the player cap and map size according to observed capacity. Create the logs directory if your build does not create it automatically. Keep the batch file private because it contains the RCON credential.

-logfile "logs/server.log"
Make the script executable, then add process supervision so a crash is visible and recoverable rather than leaving a dead screen session. A service manager can start it on boot, restart it when appropriate and direct output to a controlled log location. Also configure rotation; an always-growing log can consume the same disk needed for world saves.
Verify the first boot
- Start the script interactively and watch for errors instead of immediately daemonizing it.
- Confirm that the identity directory and
cfg/server.cfgare created or read. - Check the log for the listening ports and world-generation completion.
- From a Rust client on the same network, connect using the server’s address and game port. Test a second machine or phone hotspot later; a local connection can succeed even when router forwarding is wrong.
- Stop the process cleanly before changing launch arguments or installing plugins.
Ports, firewall rules and reachability
Document every listener before opening the router. A normal public server needs a game port and a query port; administration adds RCON; Rust+ adds a companion-service listener. The representative launch above uses game port 28015 and RCON port 28016. Your query and Rust+ ports should be selected and documented according to the current Rust and Rust+ documentation.
| Service | Purpose | Expose it? | Operational rule |
|---|---|---|---|
| Game | Player connections | Yes for players | Forward only the configured game port and protocol for your build. |
| Query | Server discovery and listing | Yes for a public server | Use the configured query port; do not assume it is the same as the game port. |
| RCON | Remote administration | Only when needed | Use a strong unique password and restrict source addresses where your firewall allows it. |
| Rust+ | Companion-app communication | Only when using Rust+ | Its TCP listener must be reachable from the internet. |
Create narrowly scoped host-firewall and router rules. Bind or forward only the selected ports, keep operating-system administration ports private, and avoid broad “all ports” rules. Test from outside the host network: use a different internet connection to connect to the game, check public listing behavior, authenticate through RCON if enabled, and pair Rust+ from a remote phone. Testing only from inside the LAN can hide NAT loopback and forwarding errors.

Private, hidden or whitelisted operation
For a hidden or whitelisted server, the advanced Rust guide says to block the Steam query port so the server is not discoverable in the master list. This is different from a normal public community server: players need a deliberate connection method, and you should document the address and access policy privately. Do not block the query port accidentally and then troubleshoot the result as if the server were meant to be listed.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Add uMod/Oxide only after vanilla works
Mods replace or overlay parts of the server installation. uMod’s Rust documentation describes game-specific files being copied over the existing server installation, while plugins are self-contained code modules that change server behavior. That means a plugin problem can look like a game-server problem unless you establish a clean baseline first.

- Stop RustDedicated and make a rollback copy of the complete identity and configuration.
- Confirm that the vanilla server starts, accepts a connection and shuts down cleanly.
- Install the compatible uMod/Oxide layer using the documented tooling. The uMod commands are
umod install rust -P,umod update -P,umod new launcher -Pandumod launch. - Start the modded server without adding plugins. Read the log and verify that the overlay loaded.
- Add one plugin at a time, restart, and test the feature. Keep the plugin file, version and installation date in an inventory so you can identify the change that introduced a fault.
Do not copy plugin files from an unrelated Rust build. A plugin that loads on one game or uMod/Oxide version may fail after an update, and error messages in the log are more useful when only one variable changed.
Updates without deleting your mod layer
SteamCMD updates are necessary, but an update script that runs blindly at every boot can return files to a vanilla state and remove Oxide. Facepunch specifically warns about this interaction. Treat updates as a controlled maintenance operation rather than a one-line reboot task.
- Announce maintenance and stop the server cleanly.
- Back up the server identity,
server.cfg, launch scripts, plugin list and logs you may need for diagnosis. - Run SteamCMD with
+app_update 258550against the correct server directory. - Install or update the uMod/Oxide layer compatible with the new Rust build; reinstall it if the SteamCMD update removed the overlay.
- Check every plugin for compatibility, temporarily remove plugins that throw load errors, and keep the rollback copy untouched.
- Start the server, inspect the log, connect as an administrator, and test core gameplay before reopening the server to everyone.
Automate the repeatable parts only after this sequence works manually. An update job should stop the process, preserve backups, update the game, restore the compatible mod layer, and leave a clear log of each step. Never let an automatic update overwrite your only known-good identity copy.
Backups, wipes and Rust+
The server identity is the irreplaceable operational unit. Back it up before a map wipe, migration, operating-system change, plugin replacement or major Rust update. Include the configuration and launch files so the backup can recreate the same identity, not merely the executable.
Rust+ has an additional identity file. Facepunch’s Rust+ documentation says the companion server’s TCP listener must be accessible over the internet and that its identity file should stay with the server and backups. Keep that file beside your documented server backup, restrict its permissions, and restore it together with the matching server identity. If you move only the executable or only the Rust+ file, pairing and companion features may fail.
Maintain at least one backup that is not on the live machine. Periodically perform a test restore into a separate directory or host; a file that has never been restored is not a proven backup.
Troubleshoot by symptom
| Symptom | Likely checks | Safe corrective action |
|---|---|---|
| Server starts but is not listed | Query port is not forwarded, the host firewall blocks it, the server is intentionally hidden, or the router has a NAT limitation. | Confirm the configured query port, test from another network, and decide whether the server should be public or hidden before changing rules. |
| Direct connection fails | Wrong address or game port, missing forwarding, host firewall denial, or the process stopped during world generation. | Read the live log, test locally first, then test externally with the exact game port shown in the launch script. |
| Settings do not persist | server.cfg is under the wrong identity, the launch script uses a different +server.identity, or the file contains an invalid variable. |
Match the identity name and path exactly, change one setting, restart, and verify the resulting log. |
| Plugins disappeared after an update | SteamCMD restored vanilla files or the uMod/Oxide layer is incompatible with the new build. | Stop the server, restore the backup if necessary, reinstall the compatible layer, then load plugins one at a time. |
| RCON cannot connect | The RCON port is not reachable, the password in the client differs from the launch script, or a firewall exposes the wrong interface. | Keep RCON closed to the public internet where possible, verify the exact port and secret, and test from an approved network. |
| Rust+ will not pair or update | The companion TCP port is inaccessible or the Rust+ identity file does not match the server backup. | Check internet reachability for that TCP listener and restore the matching identity file with the server identity. |
| Lag, crashes or exhausted memory | Map size, player count, CPU speed, storage latency, plugins or other services exceed the host’s capacity. | Compare peak resource use with the 12 GB free-RAM baseline, reduce map or player load, disable suspect plugins and move unrelated services away from the host. |
A maintenance routine that stays manageable
- Every restart: use the same launch script, confirm the intended identity, and inspect the first portion of the log for port and plugin errors.
- Before updates: stop cleanly, copy the identity and Rust+ identity file, and record the current Rust and uMod/Oxide versions.
- After updates: test a player connection, administration access and any critical plugin before announcing the server open.
- Regularly: review disk space, memory use, log growth, backup freshness and firewall rules.
- After configuration changes: restart or use the supported reload behavior, then verify the effective value rather than assuming the edit was read.
If you want the least operational work, choose a managed Rust service whose panel exposes the ports, identity files, backups and plugin controls you require. If you need complete file access or unusual automation, use a VPS or your own machine and accept responsibility for hardening, updates, monitoring and recovery. In either case, the dependable order is the same: install RustDedicated with app ID 258550, prove a vanilla server, secure the network, add mods gradually, and preserve the identity before every risky change.
