Choose a community server if Xbox or PS5 players must find your world in Palworld’s in-game server list. Choose a directly addressed dedicated server if everyone can connect with an IP address and port and you do not need list discovery. The important detail is that these are not two unrelated hosting technologies. Pocketpair’s v0.5.0 documentation defines a community server as a dedicated server registered on the game’s server list. The underlying world therefore runs on a separate server process in both cases; the community option adds registration and list visibility.
That distinction determines your platform compatibility, connection method, administrative work and troubleshooting path. This guide compares those choices, explains the hardware and network requirements for self-hosting, and gives setup routes for Windows, Linux and Docker without assuming a universal player-count limit that Pocketpair has not published.

Community server and dedicated server: the short technical difference
A dedicated server hosts the Palworld world without the host’s game client running it. The server process stays online independently, so players can join while the owner is not playing. Players normally connect by entering the server’s public IP address and port.
A community server is that same dedicated-server model with an additional registration step. Pocketpair describes it as “a dedicated server that has registered a dedicated server on the server list in the game client.” Registration makes the world discoverable through Palworld’s community-server browser instead of requiring every player to know an address.

Consequently, the choice is mostly about how players discover and reach the server, not whether the world is hosted independently. Both options still require a running machine, a server process, saved-world storage and network access. A community listing does not remove firewall, router or hardware requirements.
Which option fits your group?
| Decision point | Community server | Directly addressed dedicated server |
|---|---|---|
| Discovery | Appears in Palworld’s in-game community-server list after registration. | Players use an IP address and port; it is not selected from the list. |
| Xbox or PS5 access | Pocketpair’s guide says Xbox and PS5 connections require community-server deployment. | Direct IP/port access alone does not satisfy that documented console requirement. |
| PC access | PC players can use the list, subject to the server’s platform and cross-play status. | PC players connect directly with the supplied address and port. |
| Server process | Dedicated server process running separately from the game client. | Dedicated server process running separately from the game client. |
| Router and firewall work | Still required when self-hosting; list registration does not automatically open your network. | Required when self-hosting so Internet traffic reaches the server. |
| Administration | Includes server operation plus community-list registration and list-related troubleshooting. | Includes server operation, address management and direct-connection troubleshooting. |
| Managed hosting | Can be supplied by a managed host if you do not want to maintain hardware or networking. | Can also be supplied by a managed host; the provider supplies the reachable endpoint. |
Decision rule: select community deployment when console players or nontechnical players need list discovery. Select direct dedicated access when your group is comfortable entering an address and you want the simplest distinction between “server is online” and “server is listed.”
Can Xbox or PS5 players join?
What Pocketpair’s v0.5.0 guide says
Pocketpair’s About server page for version 0.5.0 states that joining from the Xbox version or PS5 version requires deploying the server as a community server. That is a deployment requirement: a server intended for those console clients must use the community-server route rather than only exposing a direct address.
The same guide lists Steam, Xbox Series, Microsoft Store Windows PC and macOS as cross-play enabled by default. On that v0.5.0 page, PS5 cross-play is listed as currently unavailable. These statements are versioned and platform-specific, so do not treat a community listing as a guarantee that every console combination will connect. Verify the current Pocketpair documentation and your game versions before committing to a platform-mixed world.

Practical platform scenarios
- Steam-only group: direct IP/port access is usually the most straightforward if everyone can use the address. Community registration is useful when you want list discovery.
- Steam, Xbox Series and Microsoft Store Windows PC: Pocketpair lists these platforms as cross-play enabled by default in v0.5.0. Community deployment is the documented route when Xbox players must join through the server list.
- PS5 involvement: the guide requires community deployment for PS5 access but simultaneously lists PS5 cross-play as unavailable in v0.5.0. Treat PS5 participation as unavailable under that documented status until a newer official update says otherwise.
- macOS players: macOS is included in the v0.5.0 cross-play-enabled list, but the server and client versions still need to be compatible.
Do you need a dedicated server for more than four players?
If your group is larger than the normal host-session arrangement, a separately running dedicated server is the appropriate architecture because the world no longer depends on one player keeping the game client open. A community server is not an alternative architecture here; it is a listed dedicated server.
Pocketpair’s current requirements and server pages do not state a universal maximum player count in the material documented for version 0.5.0. Do not rely on an uncited “32-player” limit or assume that every host has the same capacity. The number of simultaneous players you can support depends on the game’s current server limits, configuration, CPU and memory headroom, save activity and network conditions. Check the current official documentation for any limit applicable to your release before promising a capacity to your group.
For a small private group, the useful question is therefore not “community or dedicated for four-plus players?” Both community and direct options are dedicated-server deployments. Ask instead whether players need console compatibility and list discovery, and whether you can keep the machine and network reachable.

Compute and memory
Pocketpair’s v0.5.0 requirements recommend a four-core CPU and list 16 GB of memory. The documentation says that 8 GB is bootable but increases the possibility of server crashes caused by running out of memory. Treat 16 GB as the sensible baseline for a persistent world, especially if the same machine runs an operating system, monitoring tools or other services.

Storage and save reliability
Use a faster SSD rather than low-performance storage. Pocketpair warns that low-performance storage may corrupt saved data. The requirement is about storage performance and reliability, not a particular brand or capacity. Leave enough free space for the operating system, server files, logs, updates and multiple backups of the world. A 1 TB NVMe SSD is a practical purchasing target for a new host, but Pocketpair’s cited requirement does not establish 1 TB as a minimum.
Network and operating-system tasks
- The default server connection uses UDP port 8211.
- Forward UDP 8211 on your router to the local IP address of the server machine.
- Allow the server executable through the operating system firewall. On Windows, firewall configuration is a separate task from router forwarding.
- Give players the public IP address and port when using direct access. A local address such as 192.168.x.x is generally only useful inside your home network.
- Keep the machine online and prevent sleep or hibernation while the world is meant to be available.
If you cannot configure port forwarding, cannot keep a machine online or do not want to maintain operating-system updates, managed Palworld server hosting removes much of that work. You still need to select a region, set access controls and maintain backups, but the provider operates the reachable server endpoint. Godlike.Host is one option for managed Palworld servers: it offers a Pterodactyl-based game panel, free DDoS protection, up to three free backups a day with restore, a choice of 10 locations and 24/7 live chat or ticket support, and you can see the current plans before you decide.
Windows Steam setup: the easiest documented route
Pocketpair describes downloading “Palworld Dedicated Server” through Steam as the easy route for people without prior game-server experience. Use a Windows PC that meets the requirements and can remain online.
- Install Steam on the Windows host and sign in with the account used to install the server tool.
- Open Steam’s Library, show the tools in your library if necessary, and install Palworld Dedicated Server.
- Launch the installed server executable,
PalServer.exe. Keep the process running; closing it stops the world. - Configure the server’s world and access settings using the current Pocketpair configuration instructions for your release. Record any password or administrative settings for the people who will manage the world.
- Create an inbound Windows Firewall rule for the server and allow UDP traffic on port 8211.
- Assign the host a stable local IP address, then create a router port-forwarding rule for UDP 8211 to that address.
- Test from a player outside the host’s home network. For direct access, provide the public IP and port. Do not use the router’s private LAN address for Internet players.
- If consoles must join through discovery, complete the community-server registration settings described in Pocketpair’s current guide and confirm that the server appears in the in-game list.
Run a controlled test before inviting the whole group: connect once from the host’s network and once from an external network, then stop and restart the process to verify that the world and settings persist.

SteamCMD setup on Windows or Linux
SteamCMD is useful when you want a scripted, lightweight installation instead of the Steam desktop client. Pocketpair documents the Palworld server application as Steam app ID 2394010.
- Install SteamCMD on the chosen operating system.
- Use SteamCMD to log in as an anonymous user when supported by the current distribution, select app ID
2394010, and download or update the dedicated-server files. - On Windows, start
PalServer.exe. On Linux, startPalServer.sh. - Run the process under a service manager or a controlled shell session so it can restart after maintenance, while ensuring that automatic restarts do not overwrite or discard saves.
- Open and forward UDP 8211 exactly as you would for the Steam desktop installation.
- Apply the community registration configuration if console players need list access; otherwise distribute the public address and port to direct-connect players.
Windows remains the gentler choice for newcomers. Pocketpair notes that Linux requires some Linux knowledge, including command-line administration, file permissions, updates and service management.

Pocketpair also documents an official Docker image. Containers are convenient when you already operate Docker, because the server files, environment settings and restart policy can be managed declaratively. They add another layer, however: persistent volume mapping, container networking, image updates and log collection must all be correct or the world can appear to reset or become unreachable.

Connection method and discoverability
Using the community list
Community registration is valuable when players should be able to search for the world by its server name rather than copy an address. It also matches Pocketpair’s documented path for Xbox and PS5 clients. List visibility can still be affected by version mismatches, registration settings, maintenance or platform support, so keep the server name distinctive and give players a fallback status message when the listing is temporarily absent.
Using a direct IP and port
Direct connection is predictable for a technically comfortable group: send the public IP and UDP port 8211, and update the address if your Internet connection changes. Consider using a stable DNS name only if you already operate one; the essential information remains the reachable address and port. Direct access does not make the server private by itself, so use the server’s password and access controls when you do not want an open world.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The server is running but nobody can connect
- Confirm that the server process is still running and that the expected world loaded without an error.
- Check that the router forwards UDP 8211, not only TCP, to the correct local IP.
- Verify the Windows firewall rule or the equivalent Linux host firewall rule.
- Have an external player test the public address; a test from inside the same LAN may not represent Internet reachability.
The server does not appear in the community list
- Confirm that the server is configured for community registration rather than only direct access.
- Check the server name and registration settings, then restart the server process if the guide requires a restart after changes.
- Confirm that the client and server versions match and that the target platform is supported by the current cross-play status.
- Use direct address testing with a supported PC client to separate a list-registration problem from a general network problem.
The process crashes or restarts
- Check available memory. Pocketpair says 8 GB is bootable but increases out-of-memory crash risk; 16 GB is the listed memory figure.
- Review server logs for repeated errors and make sure the host is not running out of disk space.
- Stop the server cleanly before maintenance and keep independent backups of the world.
The world or save becomes corrupted
Move the server data to reliable, faster SSD storage and retain dated backups before changing configuration or updating. Pocketpair specifically warns that low-performance storage may corrupt saved data. If corruption appears after an abrupt power loss, stop further writes, preserve the affected files and restore the newest known-good backup rather than repeatedly launching the damaged world.

Community deployment is the documented requirement for console access, but Pocketpair’s v0.5.0 page also marks PS5 cross-play as unavailable. Check for a newer official platform-status update before changing router settings or rebuilding the server; a network fix cannot enable a cross-play feature that the current game version does not provide.
Choosing self-hosting versus managed hosting
Self-host when you already have an always-on PC, can forward UDP 8211, are willing to maintain firewall rules and updates, and want control over files and backups. It is the route with the most hands-on responsibility but no separate hosting operator between you and the server.
Choose managed hosting when the machine cannot stay online, your Internet connection does not permit the required forwarding, or nobody in the group wants to administer Windows, Linux or Docker. Ask a provider whether it supports the platform mix you need, community-server registration, automated backups, region selection and the current Palworld version. “Managed” does not remove the need to decide whether players use the list or a direct endpoint; it mainly moves hardware and network operations to the provider.
Final choice
For a console-inclusive group, deploy a community server and verify the current Xbox, Microsoft Store Windows PC and PS5 status before inviting players. For a PC group that can exchange an address, a direct dedicated server is usually simpler because it avoids relying on list discovery. In either case, plan around a four-core CPU, 16 GB of memory, reliable SSD storage, UDP 8211, router forwarding and firewall rules. The server type changes how players find the world; it does not remove the operational requirements of running one.
