Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteTo make your own “1-1” in Super Mario Maker 2, choose the Super Mario Bros. game style, build a short opening course that introduces its ideas clearly, then play it in the editor and adjust anything that feels confusing or unfair. Treat it as a homage unless you are working from a reliable map or playable copy of the original: Nintendo’s official Maker 2 materials explain the editor and its features, but do not provide a tile-by-tile World 1-1 recreation recipe.
What you need to make a 1-1-style course
Super Mario Maker 2 is a Nintendo Switch course-creation game with tools and course parts for building levels. Start by selecting the Super Mario Bros. style if you want the original game’s visual language. Nintendo’s game page describes the editor and available styles and themes; the game itself is the place to create and test the course.

Choose a theme deliberately. Features differ between styles and themes, so don’t assume a part or behavior works identically everywhere. Check what is available in your selected style and theme before building around it. For the classic opening-course feel, prioritize recognizable ground, open space, and a readable sequence of movement and obstacles over adding every possible course element.
Plan the course as an introduction
A strong opening course teaches by letting the player encounter an idea, understand it, and then use it with slightly more confidence. That is a design approach, not a claim that every element below occupies a specific position in the original World 1-1.

#1 Best Overall
- Super Mario Maker 2, the sequel to Super Mario make
- Launches exclusively for Nintendo
- Super Mario courses of your dreams
- Begin with room to move. Give the player a safe stretch to start running and jumping before asking them to react to a threat.
- Introduce one challenge at a time. Use a simple obstacle or enemy, with enough space to see it and respond. Avoid combining several unfamiliar hazards in the opening beat.
- Build on what the player has learned. Later sections can ask for a more deliberate jump or a response to a familiar obstacle in a new context. Keep the route legible so difficulty comes from play, not guesswork.
- Give the course a clear finish. Make the route to the goal understandable, and use the final stretch to provide a satisfying close rather than an abrupt surprise.
These are practical homage-building choices, not an exact conversion map. If exact placement matters to you, first consult a reliable playable copy or map of the original. The official Maker 2 sources cited here do not establish canonical tile locations, enemy positions, or a World 1-1 course ID.
Choose between a close recreation and a looser tribute
There is no single objectively best approach. Decide what “your own 1-1” means to you, then judge the result against that goal.

| Approach | What to prioritize | Useful check |
|---|---|---|
| Close homage | Classic visual language and a progression that recalls an early introductory course. | Compare against a reliable original map or playable version; don’t label uncertain details as exact. |
| Loose tribute | A recognizable opening-course mood, while using features that suit your chosen Maker 2 theme. | Check that new mechanics support a clear introduction rather than obscuring the route. |
For either approach, consider three things: how closely the visuals evoke the original, how clearly the course introduces its movement and obstacles, and how it actually plays after testing. Those are useful design criteria, not a published Nintendo scoring system.
Playtest in the editor and revise
Don’t rely on the editor view alone. Play the course after making changes and check whether jumps, enemy placements, and the route feel as intended. Nintendo says the screen normally scrolls with Mario’s movement, so observe what the player can see as they approach each challenge rather than judging only from the full course layout. If a hazard appears too suddenly or a jump feels awkward, change the course and test again.

This iterative approach echoes a general principle Shigeru Miyamoto described in a 2015 TIME interview: make a change and test its effect on overall playability. That principle supports repeated testing; it does not establish a particular World 1-1 layout.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Share or find courses online
Course World lets players access courses and save favorites. Nintendo’s online course access requires a Nintendo Switch Online membership, as described on its Nintendo Switch Online page. Online sharing is optional for building your course; you can create and playtest it in the editor without treating a published course as proof of fidelity to the original.
