To make a world on Roblox, create an experience in Roblox Studio, build its environment with parts and terrain, add something players can do, then test and publish it. In Roblox’s terminology, the experience contains one or more places; each place holds a world and the objects and scripts that make it work.
What a “world” means on Roblox
Roblox calls games experiences. An experience begins with a place that players load into. A place contains the 3D environment—such as parts, meshes, terrain, and lighting—as well as objects and scripts that control what happens while players are there. An experience can include multiple places, for example, separate areas of a larger game. Roblox’s guide to experiences, games, and places explains how they fit together.
Start an experience in Roblox Studio
Roblox Studio is the creation environment for building, scripting, testing, and publishing experiences. Open Studio and create a project from a template. For a straightforward beginner start, choose Baseplate: it gives you a flat base and a spawn location to build around. Roblox’s getting-started guide introduces Studio, while its project tutorial walks through starting a project.
Plan the space before you build
Decide where players appear and what they should be able to reach, explore, or do. Keep the first version focused: sketch a simple route from the spawn point to one destination or activity. Roblox’s beginner environment tutorial begins with the spawn location and clears the baseplate before shaping an island around it, a useful way to establish the playable area before adding details. Build the landscape and structures
Use Studio’s objects and building tools for structures, platforms, and props. For hills, islands, and other landforms, the Terrain Editor supports manual sculpting as well as terrain generation and image imports. Choose the approach that fits the first draft you need:
- Parts and objects: Build structures and props directly, with precise control over their shape and placement.
- Manual terrain editing: Sculpt the landscape and select terrain materials when you want direct control over its features.
- Generation or import: Use terrain generation for a broad initial landscape, or import a heightmap (and optionally a colormap) as a starting point for terrain.
These are workflow choices, not a ranking: a generated landscape can provide a base to refine, while hand-sculpting suits areas where you want to shape details yourself. Roblox’s Terrain Editor documentation covers its Create and Edit toolsets, and Environmental terrain describes terrain building.

For imported heightmaps, Roblox documents a maximum supported image size of 4096 × 4096 pixels, with each pixel representing 4 studs in Studio. Terrain itself uses voxels that occupy 4 × 4 × 4 studs. These are technical constraints for terrain editing, not recommended dimensions for a map; consult the Terrain Editor documentation when preparing an import.
Give players something to do
A built environment becomes a game when players can interact with it or pursue a goal. Start with one clear mechanic that fits the space—a collectible to find, a hazard to avoid, or a destination to reach—then add the objects and scripts needed to make it work. Roblox’s core curriculum develops a project from a greybox into coin collection, player data, hazards, and an upgrade button. You can follow a similar progression without trying to build every system at once.

Polish and test the experience
Once the main route and mechanic work, refine the environment with lighting, effects, and visual assets. Playtest in Studio to check that the spawn point, paths, interactions, and goals behave as intended. Use device-emulation features to see how the experience works in different device contexts. Roblox’s core curriculum treats environment, gameplay, and polish as connected parts of building an experience.
Publish the place and choose who can access it
When the place is ready, use Studio’s publish workflow to save it to Roblox. Publishing and making an experience available to others are separate decisions: newly published games are private by default, so change the access or release settings when you are ready for players to enter. You can also publish additional places into the same experience for distinct areas. Follow Create and publish games and places for the publishing and access steps.

One large place or several?
An experience can keep its playable area in one place or use multiple places for separate areas. Roblox describes that structure as largely a matter of preference and points creators to performance-design guidance; there is no universal best choice established here. For a first project, build the core loop in one place, then consider separate places if distinct areas suit the experience.
