To make an accessory in Roblox, create a 3D model, import it into Roblox Studio, and use Avatar Setup to configure and test it. Start by choosing between a rigid accessory, such as a hat that attaches at one point, and a layered accessory, such as a jacket that fits over and moves with the avatar. You can use an accessory in your own experience without listing it for sale; Marketplace publishing is a separate step.
Choose between a rigid and a layered accessory
The accessory type determines how you model and fit the item. Roblox’s guides describe rigid accessories as items that keep their shape and attach at a body point; layered accessories use rigging and cages to fit over an avatar and move with it.

Make the 3D model
For a rigid accessory
Create the mesh and texture in a 3D program such as Blender or Maya. Roblox’s workflow uses a MeshPart within a Model, with an Attachment object that defines where the accessory connects to the avatar. Roblox’s Accessory Fitting Tool can generate attachment points. Export the avatar components together in a single FBX or glTF file for Studio.

For a layered accessory
Roblox’s Blender tutorial starts from a mannequin shape, then has you model and texture the mesh, fit it with Roblox template cages, and rig it using Roblox armature templates. Export the result and import it into Studio for conversion. The tutorial is intended for creators with moderate Blender experience, so this route has more setup than making a simple rigid item.
Import and configure the accessory in Roblox Studio
- Export your model. Use a format supported by Studio, such as FBX, OBJ, or glTF.
- Import the file into Studio. Review the Importer preview and resolve any warnings or errors before importing.
- Open Avatar Setup for the imported model. Use it to process the model into a rigid or layered accessory and add missing avatar components.
- Select the appropriate preset. For an item intended for Marketplace submission, Roblox recommends the Platform Avatar preset, which applies more restrictive validation. The Development Avatar preset is less restrictive and intended for NPCs or starter characters in experiences.

Test fit, attachments, and movement
Use Avatar Setup to check the accessory on avatar bodies and with animations and other accessories. For rigid items, adjust the attachment if the item sits incorrectly. For layered items, inspect and edit the cage if the fit is wrong. If the problem cannot be fixed in Studio, revise the model in your 3D application and run Avatar Setup again.
- Check that a rigid item connects at the intended body point and sits in the right position.
- Check that a layered item fits the avatar and moves appropriately during animation.
- Review how it looks with other accessories to catch fit conflicts.
Use it in an experience or publish it on the Marketplace
Creating, building, and sharing on Roblox is free, according to Roblox’s accessory tutorials. Selling an item is optional and requires a separate publishing process: upload it for Studio validation and moderation, meet the current creator requirements, and configure its Marketplace details. Roblox’s guides say Marketplace publication involves fees and a publishing advance, but amounts and eligibility rules can change. Check Roblox’s current Fees and Commissions and creator eligibility documentation before planning a sale.

Roblox estimates that a rigid accessory may take up to 24 hours to clear moderation; this is an estimate, not a guaranteed turnaround. Its rigid accessory publishing guide also says you cannot add a custom thumbnail after uploading a rigid accessory, so prepare the thumbnail before upload.
