A mini PC can run an encoder that sends a continuous feed to YouTube Live, but it is only “always on” if the computer, internet connection and power all remain available. Set up and test the stream in YouTube Studio before leaving it unattended; plan separately for outages, recovery and replays longer than 12 hours.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel that is verified and eligible for live streaming. YouTube requires no live-stream restriction in the previous 90 days; first-time live-stream activation may take up to 24 hours. Enable it ahead of your launch. YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance and encoder setup guide explain the requirements.
- A mini PC capable of sustaining your chosen resolution, frame rate and encoder settings, with adequate cooling for prolonged operation.
- A reliable internet connection with enough upstream capacity for the selected stream quality, plus dependable power for the PC and network equipment.
- Streaming software that can send an encoder feed to YouTube Live. YouTube explains: “An encoder converts your video into a digital format to stream on YouTube.” See Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Video and audio you have the right to stream. YouTube policies apply to live broadcasts as well as other content.
Choose a mini PC for the actual workload
Search for a “mini PC for YouTube streaming,” but choose by the work it must do rather than by the form factor or a claimed maximum specification. Encoding a static scene, handling fast gameplay, and sending high-resolution, high-frame-rate video can place different demands on the processor or hardware encoder. The outcome also depends on codec, encoder configuration, cooling and how long the computer must run without intervention.
No particular mini PC model, Indian purchase price or measured encoding capability is established here. Before buying, check that the exact device and software support your target output settings, and look for evidence about sustained operation and cooling—not just short peak performance. If you already own a computer, test it with the intended content and settings before purchasing another one.
Estimate the electricity cost for your setup
There is no single India-wide figure for the cost of running a mini PC: the device’s average power draw and your local electricity tariff determine it. Measure or obtain the PC’s average draw in watts under the intended streaming workload, then calculate:

Estimated energy (kWh) = average watts × operating hours ÷ 1,000
Multiply that energy figure by your current local tariff to estimate the electricity charge. This is a calculation method, not a national cost estimate; include network equipment or backup-power losses separately if you want them counted.

Configure the YouTube stream
- Enable live streaming. In YouTube Studio, follow the live-streaming setup prompts for your channel. If this is your first time enabling it, allow up to 24 hours before the planned broadcast.
- Create or schedule a broadcast. Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and create a stream, or schedule it if you want an upcoming broadcast to appear in advance. YouTube’s encoder guide covers both workflows: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Copy the connection details into your encoder. In the stream’s settings, copy the server URL and stream key into the corresponding connection fields in your streaming software. Keep the key private: it controls where your encoder sends its feed. If you suspect it has been exposed, replace it in Studio and update the encoder.
- Choose output settings your PC and upload connection can sustain. YouTube recommends RTMPS and documents H.264 settings, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended two-second keyframe interval, with four seconds as the maximum. Its bitrate recommendations vary by resolution; consult the official table for your intended resolution and frame rate rather than treating one bitrate as universal. See Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
- Start the encoder and check the preview. Send the feed to YouTube, confirm that the preview appears in Live Control Room, then complete the go-live action shown there. Exact software labels vary by encoder.
- Test and monitor. Before publishing the long-running broadcast, test with representative motion and audio. Review the preview and YouTube’s stream-health indicators, then keep checking them while live. A feed that works for a static image may fail or look poor with fast gameplay, complex motion or sustained audio.
Plan for continuous operation
A mini PC does not make a stream outage-proof. Treat the computer, encoder software, home network and power supply as separate points that can fail. YouTube’s setup guidance describes connecting and monitoring an encoder feed; the following continuity measures are practical planning, not guarantees from YouTube.
- Encoder recovery: Know how to restart the streaming software and confirm the feed has returned in Studio. Check whether your chosen software can restart after a crash or a PC reboot; do not assume that it can.
- Internet interruptions: A brief upload drop can interrupt the feed. Check your ISP’s reliability at the location and time you plan to stream. Have a way to notice an outage and determine whether the encoder reconnects or needs attention.
- Power interruptions: A power cut stops the PC and may also stop the router or modem. If continuity matters, assess backup power for the whole network path, not just the mini PC, and decide what recovery looks like once power returns.
- Maintenance and unattended operation: Plan updates, cooling and physical access. Test the full arrangement for a representative period before relying on it, and avoid making changes during a broadcast unless you know how they affect the encoder.
What continuous streaming means for replays and policies
Long broadcasts are not one guaranteed archived replay
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. That is a material limit for a continuous feed: do not count on one uninterrupted replay being archived if the broadcast runs beyond 12 hours. If you need durable replay segments, plan broadcasts under 12 hours and verify the current Live Control Room behavior before relying on a particular archive workflow. The duration statement is in YouTube’s encoder guide.

Use content you are allowed to broadcast
Follow YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service, and use only content for which you have the necessary rights. YouTube lists an active-stream copyright strike and a match to another copyrighted live broadcast among possible causes of live-stream restrictions. See Get started with live streaming and Avoid restrictions on YouTube live streaming. A looping video is not exempt from copyright rules simply because it is prerecorded.
India-specific bandwidth context
The National Informatics Centre’s Webcast Services page specifies 2–4 Mbps per stream for hired agencies using its webcast workflow. That is an NIC service requirement, not a YouTube encoder recommendation or a minimum for a household mini-PC stream. For a YouTube broadcast, select a quality your own connection can sustain and use YouTube’s resolution-specific encoder settings: NIC Webcast Services and YouTube encoder settings.

Your usable upload speed and reliability depend on your ISP, location and network conditions. Test from the place and connection where the mini PC will run, preferably while other household devices are using the network as they normally would. Keep enough headroom for normal variation rather than assuming a speed-test result is a constant.

A local mini PC is useful when you want control over an encoder at home, particularly for a feed that depends on a live input such as gameplay. It also means you own and maintain the hardware and depend on local power and internet. A hosted option can be relevant when the broadcast is prerecorded playback rather than a live camera or gameplay input. YouTube’s encoder help mentions a cloud-based 24/7 tool for prerecorded video, but that reference does not establish its commercial terms or suitability for every use case.

Quick Recap
Troubleshooting an always-on setup
| Symptom | Likely cause to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| No preview in Live Control Room | Encoder is not sending, or its server URL or stream key is incorrect. | Check the encoder’s connection settings against the current stream details in Studio, confirm it is running, and keep the key private. Replace the key if exposed. |
| Stream health reports problems or video stalls | Upload instability, bitrate beyond what the connection sustains, or an overloaded encoder. | Check YouTube’s stream-health feedback, then test a lower setting within YouTube’s guidance. Confirm the PC can sustain the output during representative motion. |
| Video looks choppy or the PC becomes unstable | The device may not sustain the chosen resolution, frame rate, codec or encoder workload, or may be overheating. | Reduce output demands, verify encoder configuration and cooling, and run another representative test before leaving the system unattended. |
| Stream stops after a power or network interruption | The PC, router or ISP connection did not recover automatically, or the encoder needs a restart. | Check each part of the power and network path, restart the encoder if needed, and verify the preview and health status before considering the feed restored. |
| Expected replay is missing or incomplete | The broadcast exceeded YouTube’s automatic-archive limit or Studio behavior differed from the planned workflow. | For replay needs, plan shorter segments and verify the current archive behavior in Studio; YouTube’s automatic archive statement covers streams under 12 hours. |
