You can turn an existing Minecraft world into a server, but the steps depend on whether it is a Java Edition or Bedrock Edition save. For Bedrock Dedicated Server, back up the world, copy its folder into the server’s worlds/ directory, set level-name in server.properties to match the folder exactly, then start the server. Java Edition requires Java server software; Bedrock server software cannot load a Java world.
Choose the route for your edition and players
Java and Bedrock use different server software and world formats, so first confirm which edition your world uses. Minecraft labels its Java server software for Java Edition only; Bedrock Dedicated Server (BDS) is for Bedrock Edition. Players also need a compatible edition and game version to join.
Decide whether people will connect only from your home network or from elsewhere. A self-hosted server runs on a computer you manage; to keep it available when you close Minecraft, that computer and its server process must remain running. A managed host or Realms may suit you better if you do not want to maintain the server computer, network access, and backups.
Make a Bedrock world into a dedicated server
1. Back up the world and prepare BDS
Keep a separate copy of the world before changing or moving it. Download Bedrock Dedicated Server from Minecraft’s official Bedrock server page. The page lists Windows 10 version 10.0.15063 or later, Windows Server 2016 or later, and Ubuntu 22.04 LTS or later as supported operating systems; check it again before installation because requirements can change.

Extract the ZIP into an empty folder and run the server once. This creates its configuration files and the worlds/ directory. Stop the server before copying a world into it.
2. Find and copy the existing world
On Windows, Microsoft documents local Bedrock worlds under %appdata%Minecraft Bedrockusers<user id>gamescom.mojangminecraftWorlds. The folders may have cryptic names; open levelname.txt inside a folder to identify the world by its displayed name. Copy the complete world folder—not just individual files—into the BDS worlds/ directory. If the server is on another computer, transfer the folder there, for example in a ZIP archive.

3. Set the world name and start the server
Give the copied folder a simple name without special characters if needed. Open server.properties in the BDS folder and set level-name to the copied folder’s exact name, including capitalization. Start or restart the server so it loads that world.
4. Connect and then configure outside access
Test from a client on the same machine or local network before inviting remote players. For another device on your network, connect using the server computer’s local IP address. Microsoft notes that a Windows client connecting to a server on the same host may require loopback to be enabled. BDS uses ports 19132 and 19133 by default, according to Microsoft’s Bedrock Dedicated Server guide.
To allow connections from outside your local network, configure the computer’s firewall and, where required, the router. Open only the traffic needed for your setup and follow current platform guidance. Router settings differ, so the exact steps depend on your equipment and network.
5. Keep versions compatible
Update the server and clients so they use compatible game versions. Microsoft documents protocol mismatch errors such as “Outdated Client” and “Outdated Server” when versions diverge. If a player sees one, check which side is behind and update it before changing the world files.

Download the official Java Edition server software and use a compatible Java runtime. Do not point Bedrock server software at a Java save. Back up the world and stop the server before changing its world files.
The official Java server page confirms the server is Java-only and says external access may require network configuration; it references port 25565. It does not give a verified procedure for importing an existing save. Before copying a Java world into a server, check current official guidance for the specific server version you intend to run. Then test locally before setting up internet access.

Consider Realms or managed hosting instead
Transfer a Bedrock world through Realms
Realms provides a Bedrock world-transfer option between devices, but it is separate from installing self-hosted dedicated server software. Minecraft Help says to select a Realm slot and choose Upload World for an empty slot or Replace World to overwrite a slot. On the destination device, sign in and choose Download World. The host and destination device should be updated, and an active trial or paid Realms subscription is required. See Minecraft Help’s Bedrock world-transfer instructions.
Choose a managed server if you do not want to self-host
A managed Minecraft host can reduce the work of maintaining a computer, server process, firewall, and backups. Before choosing one, verify that it supports your edition and can import your particular world format. Also check its current backup policy, availability, and terms; support and features vary by provider.
