Use cron to run a small, logged shell script that stops and restarts only the FFmpeg process serving your YouTube stream. First verify the command manually, protect your YouTube stream key, and confirm the restarted stream is healthy in YouTube Live Control Room. Cron schedules the restart; it does not supervise or identify FFmpeg for you.
Before you schedule a restart
- Know what should trigger recovery. A cron restart happens at a fixed time, whether or not FFmpeg needs it. It can help with a process that becomes stuck, but it will interrupt an otherwise healthy stream. For temporary network-output failures, FFmpeg’s FIFO output recovery is a different option; it attempts recovery without a scheduled full process restart. See the FFmpeg FIFO documentation.
- Identify the input. A file being played as a live stream may need real-time pacing with
-re. A live capture or network input should not automatically be throttled that way: FFmpeg warns that reading a live input at a low rate can cause packet loss. Check the FFmpeg documentation for the input type you use. - Allow for an interruption. Stopping and starting FFmpeg can briefly interrupt delivery. Choose a restart time that suits your stream and audience, or prefer recovery on error if a fixed interruption is not acceptable.
Get the YouTube encoder settings and key
- Open YouTube Live Control Room setup for streaming with an encoder and select or create the live stream you intend to use.
- Copy the current server URL and stream key shown for that stream. YouTube supports RTMP/RTMPS encoder settings and recommends RTMPS where supported; use the protocol and URL provided for your stream. Its encoder settings and live encoder recommendations cover stream quality considerations.
- Treat the stream key like a credential. Keep it in a protected configuration file or another appropriately restricted location, not in a public script, shared log, or article. If you reset the key, update the encoder configuration to match.
Build and test the FFmpeg command
Use absolute paths for FFmpeg and input files because cron runs with a smaller environment than an interactive shell. Test the exact command in your normal shell before scheduling it. The following is a shape to adapt, not a universal command; replace the placeholders with your input, settings, and current YouTube server URL and key:
/usr/bin/ffmpeg -nostdin -re -i /absolute/path/video.mp4 -c:v libx264 -c:a aac -f flv 'rtmps://YOUR_YOUTUBE_SERVER_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY'
-nostdin prevents FFmpeg from handling console input, which is useful for unattended/background operation. The -re option reads input at its native frame rate and is commonly useful for pacing a file in a live-streaming workflow; remove or reconsider it for a real-time capture or network input rather than applying it blindly. Confirm the output format, codecs, resolution, frame rate, keyframe interval, and bitrate against your stream setup and available upload bandwidth. YouTube’s recommendations vary by resolution, frame rate, and codec; test using the intended audio and video and monitor stream health.

Do not expose the real key in command examples, screenshots, or logs. Depending on how a process is launched, command-line arguments may be visible to local users; for a shared machine, consider a protected configuration approach appropriate to your environment.
Put process management in a restart script
A safe restart needs a reliable way to target the intended FFmpeg instance. Do not use a broad command that kills every process named ffmpeg: another stream or task on the same machine could be stopped. Use a PID file, a service manager, or a carefully scoped process match suited to your distribution and deployment. The example below shows the sequence only; the stop/start commands must be replaced with a method that identifies your stream specifically.

- Create a script at an absolute path, for example
/absolute/path/restart-stream.sh. - Have it stop the intended process cleanly, wait for it to exit, and then start the tested FFmpeg command again.
- Append standard output and error to a log file that the cron account can write, and rotate or manage that log so it does not grow without limit.
- Make the script executable and run it manually as the same Linux account cron will use. Confirm that it stops and starts only the expected process and that the log gives useful diagnostics.
There is no distribution-independent restart script in cron’s documentation: the right process identity and stop mechanism depend on how FFmpeg is run. If FFmpeg is already managed as a service, use that service’s restart mechanism from the script instead of inventing a second process manager.
Schedule the restart with cron
After the script works manually, edit the crontab for the account that owns the stream process with crontab -e. A five-field entry like this runs it daily at 03:00 according to the cron environment’s local time:

Use the full script path. Cron checks entries each minute, but local-time and daylight-saving behavior can affect when a wall-clock schedule runs. Adapt the time to your system and consult the crontab reference for the implementation in use, including how its day-of-month and day-of-week fields interact. Do not assume a schedule written for one cron implementation behaves identically on every Linux system.
Verify delivery, not just the process
- Run the script manually, then check its log for launch errors, input failures, authentication problems, or connection errors.
- Open YouTube Live Control Room for the selected stream. Confirm that YouTube is receiving the encoder feed, inspect the preview and stream health, and verify the stream is viewable as expected. YouTube’s live encoder guidance recommends testing and monitoring the stream.
- Confirm that the scheduled entry belongs to the correct user and that its environment, paths, file permissions, and log destination work under cron—not just in your interactive shell.
- Check the stream again after the next scheduled run. A running FFmpeg process by itself does not prove that YouTube is receiving a healthy, viewable stream.
Choose between cron and recovery on error
| Situation | Better fit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg is stuck or needs a predictable periodic restart | A narrowly targeted cron script | It restarts at the chosen time even if the stream is healthy, causing an interruption. |
| Output encounters a temporary network failure | Consider FFmpeg FIFO output recovery | It addresses temporary output failure, not every stuck or failed process; see the FIFO documentation. |
| You need a process to be supervised and restarted after failure | A service manager or another supervisor may be more suitable than a timed cron job | Setup and behavior depend on the Linux distribution and how FFmpeg is deployed. |
Troubleshoot common failures
The cron job runs but YouTube shows no incoming stream
Check the log for connection errors, verify the server URL and current stream key in Live Control Room, and confirm the output protocol and format match the encoder settings. A reset key must also be updated in the configuration.

The script does not run from cron
Use absolute paths for the script, FFmpeg, input files, and log. Confirm the crontab is installed for the account that can access those files, that the script is executable, and that the account has permission to stop and start the target process.
The restart stops another FFmpeg task
Replace broad process-name matching with a PID file, service-specific action, or other method that uniquely identifies this stream. Test on the same machine and account before relying on the schedule.

The file plays too fast or a live input loses packets
For file input intended to be streamed in real time, consider -re. For a real-time capture or network input, do not add it automatically; FFmpeg cautions that a low read rate on an actual live input can cause packet loss. Match pacing to the input.
The process is running but playback is unhealthy
Inspect FFmpeg’s log and YouTube’s stream-health indicators. Verify the intended resolution, frame rate, keyframe interval, codecs, and bitrate are supported by the stream configuration and connection; then test the encoder again with the actual audio and video.
Copyright and continuous-stream checks
A cron restart only controls a Linux process; it does not grant rights to stream the media. Before running a continuous or looping stream, make sure you have the rights needed for the video and audio and check YouTube’s applicable policies. Repeatedly restarting an encoder does not resolve a copyright claim or make reused material eligible for monetization. YouTube’s setup and troubleshooting guidance is available through its encoder setup and live-stream troubleshooting and settings pages.
