What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Yes—but it depends on what you mean by “commands.” Twitch moderators can use built-in slash commands such as /timeout and /ban. Custom commands such as !discord, !rules, and !schedule are normally created by the channel’s chatbot, such as StreamElements or Nightbot. Twitch moderator status does not automatically provide access to every bot dashboard or permission system.
First, identify the type of command
The prefix tells you which system handles the command:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
| Prefix | Usually handled by | Typical purpose | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
/ |
Twitch | Moderation and chat controls | /timeout username 30 |
! |
A chatbot | Custom replies and automations | !discord |
Twitch provides native moderation tools including timeouts, bans, chat-mode controls, AutoMod actions, and clearing chat. It does not provide a general native system for arbitrary ! response commands; those are normally supplied by a connected chatbot. See Twitch’s moderation guide, plus the StreamElements command documentation and Nightbot command documentation.

Sometimes. A Twitch moderator may be allowed to manage chatbot commands, but the answer depends on which bot the channel uses and how the streamer configured its permissions.

For example, StreamElements documents chat-based command management for moderators, while Nightbot allows recognized channel moderators to add, edit, and delete commands. However, being a Twitch mod does not automatically grant access to the bot’s website dashboard. Dashboard manager, editor, or similar access may need to be granted separately by the streamer. Nightbot documents separate manager access for its control panel.
Before you add anything
- Find out which chatbot is active. Ask the streamer, look for bot messages in chat, or use the bot’s help command if you know it. Common choices include StreamElements and Nightbot, but the channel may use Streamlabs Cloudbot, Moobot, or a custom bot.
- Confirm that the bot has joined the channel. Nightbot must be joined through its control panel setup. StreamElements must be connected to Twitch and joined through its Twitch chatbot setup.
- Check that the bot can send messages. StreamElements’ documented Twitch setup may require the streamer or an authorized user to type
/mod StreamElements. Requirements can vary by bot and feature. - Confirm your bot permission. Twitch moderator status and bot permission status are related, but they are not identical. StreamElements and Nightbot use their own roles and user levels.
- Check for an existing command. Avoid replacing a command used by a timer, overlay, giveaway, or moderation workflow. The same trigger may also be claimed by another bot.
How to add commands with StreamElements
Add a command in Twitch chat
Use the abbreviated form:
!cmd add !command_name response text
For example:
!cmd add !rules Please read the channel rules: https://example.com/rules
The full equivalent is:
!command add !rules Please read the channel rules: https://example.com/rules
Everything after the command name becomes the bot’s response. Viewers can then type !rules to trigger that response.
Edit a command
!cmd edit !rules Updated rules: be respectful, no spam, and no harassment.
Delete a command
!cmd del !rules
These StreamElements chat commands and their moderator use are described in the official command reference and StreamElements’ moderation guide.

An authorized user can also create commands through the StreamElements dashboard. Depending on the current interface, command settings can include the response text, response type, cooldown, aliases, variables, and permission level. Dashboard labels can change, and Twitch moderator status alone does not guarantee dashboard access. The StreamElements chatbot documentation and command overview cover these settings.

How to add commands with Nightbot
Add a command in Twitch chat
Nightbot uses !commands rather than StreamElements’ !cmd syntax:
!commands add !command_name response text
Example:
!commands add !discord Join our Discord: https://discord.gg/example
Edit a command
!commands edit !discord Updated Discord link: https://discord.gg/example
Delete a command
!commands delete !discord
Nightbot’s documented command prefix is usually !, although its control panel also supports configuring command names with another prefix or no prefix.
Use the Nightbot dashboard
Authorized users can manage commands at the Nightbot custom-command dashboard. The control-panel documentation describes settings for the command name, response, user level, cooldown, alias, and whether a command is enabled. If you cannot open or change the dashboard, ask the streamer to grant the appropriate manager access.
Examples you can adapt
Schedule command
For StreamElements:
!cmd add !schedule Next stream: Friday at 7 PM Eastern.
For Nightbot:
!commands add !schedule Next stream: Friday at 7 PM Eastern.
Discord command
!discord
Possible response:
Join the community Discord: https://discord.gg/example
Rules command
!rules
Possible response:
Be respectful, avoid spam, and follow Twitch’s rules. Full rules: https://example.com/rules
Shout-out command
Do not copy a shout-out command from one bot into another without checking its variables. StreamElements and Nightbot use different variable systems. StreamElements documents variables such as ${1}, while Nightbot supports variables including $(user), $(query), $(touser), $(channel), $(game), $(count), and $(userlevel). See the StreamElements command overview and Nightbot variable list before building a parameterized command.

!commands add !modinfo -ul=moderator Moderator information goes here.
You can combine a user-level setting with a cooldown:

Common Twitch moderation commands
If you meant a moderation action rather than a chatbot response, use Twitch’s native slash commands. These are common examples, not a complete or permanent list:
| Purpose | Example |
|---|---|
| Timeout a user | /timeout username 30 |
| Ban a user | /ban username |
| Remove a ban | /unban username |
| Clear chat | /clear |
| Make someone a moderator | /mod username |
| Remove moderator status | /unmod username |
Use Twitch’s current moderation documentation for the available commands, permissions, and behavior, which can change.
What to do when a command does not work
The bot does not respond
- Make sure you used the syntax for the correct bot. StreamElements uses
!cmd add; Nightbot uses!commands add. - Confirm that the bot is actually in the channel.
- Check whether the bot is banned or timed out.
- Make sure it can send messages and has any required moderator status.
- Confirm that the command exists, is enabled, and is spelled correctly.
- Check its cooldown.
- Verify that your Twitch account has the required bot permission.
- Look for a duplicate trigger owned by another bot.
- Check the response for malformed or unsupported variables.
For StreamElements specifically, its setup troubleshooting recommends checking whether the bot is banned and, if necessary, using:

/unban StreamElements
You get “unknown command” or a permission error
The most likely causes are using the wrong bot’s syntax, not being recognized as a moderator, a disabled or restricted command-management command, or insufficient dashboard access. Ask the streamer which bot is active, have them check the command’s permission level, and request manager or editor access if chat-based management is disabled. A harmless test such as !test can help isolate the problem.
The bot displays the command text instead of the response
Recheck the creation syntax and command prefix. A variable copied from another bot may be unsupported, or a second bot may be responding to the same trigger. Delete the faulty command and recreate it using the active bot’s documentation.
It works for you but not for viewers
The command is probably restricted to the owner or moderators. Check its user level or permission setting in chat or the dashboard. Nightbot supports this configuration in both places.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
It triggers too often
Set a cooldown. Both Nightbot and StreamElements support cooldown-related command configuration. A cooldown prevents repeated use from flooding chat, but it does not replace a permission restriction.
The response is too long or links fail
Shorten the response, split the information across multiple commands, or link to a page with the full details. Nightbot’s API documentation specifies a 400-character maximum for Nightbot command messages; that is not a universal Twitch limit. Do not assume the same limit applies to every chatbot.
A command unexpectedly performs moderation
Be careful with commands whose responses contain Twitch slash commands. Depending on the bot and context, a returned slash command may be interpreted as an action rather than ordinary text. Test moderation automations only with the streamer’s approval and restrict them to trusted users.
Quick Recap
The quickest decision guide
- Want a response such as a Discord link? Use the channel’s chatbot: StreamElements uses
!cmd add; Nightbot uses!commands add. - Want to timeout or ban someone? Use Twitch’s native slash commands, such as
/timeout username 30or/ban username. - Want to configure it on a website? Use the bot dashboard, but ask the streamer for separate manager or editor access if needed.
- Want only staff to use it? Set the bot’s permission level or user level; do not rely on the command’s name.
